The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 00:38

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

In any case, if I have the timeline of the police interview and so on correct, Don Patterson hadn't died yet. So it was their grandmother and aunt who had died, and one would expect Erin would have passed that information on (and/or considered the effect on her children of their grandparents and other relatives dying hideously - and also, their father if he'd shown up that Saturday).

I'm not really sure what you're implying here? I think Simon probably already suspected Erin had something to do with his parents' and aunt's deaths.

I agree with this. He must have been told about the different plates by that point. I probably wouldn't have contacted her either with everything going on. This wasn’t a typical case of relatives being very ill/ dying and having to tell the children.

Had he told the police his suspicions early on? Especially after he’d been very ill previously.

velvetandsatin · 28/05/2025 08:42

He must have been told about the different plates by that point.

Heather Wilkinson talked about how odd it was that Erin served her BW on a different colour plate on the way to the hospital, when Simon was driving her and Ian there on the Sunday morning, the day after the lunch, as the ambulance was going to take too long to arrive.

Wrenjeni · 28/05/2025 08:49

But after he’d been told about the plates he was still exchanging fairly standard messages with Erin about taking the kids to the hospital.

It was an observation made by someone with gastro/food poisoning at that point. I imagine the whole thing was fermenting in their minds and suspicions forming. Once it was suggested it was Death Cap poisoning, and Erin was perfectly fine.... they must have known it was deliberate as they were dying. Hideous.

Colin Mandy SC is continuing to share parts of the Facebook exchange Erin Patterson had with friends.
Mandy has now pointed detective Stephen Eppingstall to another message Erin sent the group that was not included in the exhibit tendered by the prosecution, where she said Simon was likely loving how upset she was about the situation.

“I suspect the best thing I can do about it is forget about all of them and live my life. Simon is probably loving how upset I am about all this,” the message read.

Another user responded: “You are human and you have every right to be upset and angry. If he is loving that then that makes him even worse. Hopefully he will have to pay up soon.“

“I am so sorry Erin, it’s so f*ng hard when you’re not believed or listened to or understood. I went though similar with my ex in-laws,” a second user said.

This is the defence. Is it helping? To me just gives more motive.

I agree with you; I think it gives more motive too!

velvetandsatin · 29/05/2025 10:22

The defence does not have much to work with, in my view.

Not at all saying the footage at subway isn't her son and looking at photos for missed phones amd laptops. Doesn't change the facts.

Lunde · 29/05/2025 17:28

I'm not sure what the defence strategy is here in bringing up the exchanges with online friends where she expresses her anger towards Simon and his family - it seems to open up a can of worms for her and help the prosecution case

I agree. Listening to the mushroom case daily podcast there view was it casts doubt on the police investigation and gives wider context. Ie wasn't just awful Erin bitching they were all sharing.
Maybe this is all they have.

Dustyblue · 30/05/2025 00:00

Apparently this detective is the last prosecution witness then it's over to the defence. Really curious to see what witnesses they may or may not present (rubs hands together)

Wrenjeni · 30/05/2025 00:02

I think they are trying to suggest that Erin was carried along in the general husband slagging off vibe of the group and didn’t really mean what she said about him and his family

Dustyblue · 30/05/2025 00:04

Yes typical pack of bitches all slagging off their husbands 🙄

velvetandsatin · 30/05/2025 01:39

Even when taken in "context" they provide a stark contrast to her gushing claims to the police and the media on camera of "I loved them!"

echt · 30/05/2025 04:35

I'm wondering about when Erin takes the stand (if that's what's called in Victoria), will she refuse to answer questions? She's used to concealing things, badly to be sure.

velvetandsatin · 30/05/2025 05:49

Do you think she might? I think her defence team would be insane to let her take the stand given how poorly she has managed her interviews so far.

Pashazade · 30/05/2025 07:53

I should imagine her team would be advising against it strongly, but if she wants to (in the UK anyway) I’m not sure they’re allowed to prevent her? Hence why you see people representing themselves when it is in fact a very bad idea.

If I were the gambling type it'd be odds on NO.

That's why I'm so curious as to what witnesses might be presented. If not her, then who?

Dustyblue · 30/05/2025 12:57

Just for shits & giggles- I've been doing my head in over the spelling of defence with a 'c' versus defense with an 's'.

I used to work for the Australian Dept of Defence and that 'c' seemed important at the time. Meanwhile it seems both are ok!

Defence vs. Defense: Which Is The Correct Spelling?

If you often confuse "defense" and "defence," you have a good defense, since they are actually two spellings of the same word. We explain how they're used.

Defense is only the correct spelling if you are American!

Ditto “defence” if you are not American!

mokjkjjo · 02/06/2025 07:02

Thanks for the link. I imagine the defence will be hoping she does better than the interview where she checked her finger for tears!

Dustyblue · 02/06/2025 07:06

Gah!

Just for starters, she went from being an atheist to being a proper Christian (in prison) after having a 'spiritual experience' at church listening to her inlaws. Yes, us atheists often do that. It's the music and the vibes and shit.

I just can't. FFS.
