The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped

This has been all over the news. I live one town over from Leongatha and believe me, it's the talk of the towns.

We have loads of mushrooms around our place but wouldn't dream of eating them. About 90% of foraged mushrooms in Australia are poisonous.

Then again, you do get groups of people who think they know what they're doing, and perhaps they do.

Meanwhile this is suss-as.

Three people died from suspected mushroom poisoning after sharing a meal. Here's what we know - ABC News

Three dead and another fighting for life: What we know so far about suspected mushroom poisonings in Victoria

Police continue to investigate three suspected mushroom poisoning deaths after a family lunch last month in Leongatha in Victoria's east. Detectives have not laid any charges, but say the woman who served the meal remains a suspect. Here's what we know...

No tears.

My 2 cents...

The Husband is behind it all- imprisons ex wife, gets custody and inheritance.

As believable as guessing guilt from body language in a video.

there are loads of reasons that she might eat a different meal; food allergies, preferences, gluten, dairy, meat....she might be on a diet for medical reasons etc. I went to a dinner party once where the host made delicious food for around 10 of us. she say and ate cucumber slices because she was trying to loose weight 🤯

There aren't though, it's really weird to cook something completely different for your guests when you're the one hosting. Its not like you have to host the dinner party so no reason to not cook something you'd all eat and you enjoy.

Why are you making excuses for her?

She's admitted to buying the mushrooms, although whether she did actually buy them is for the police to find out.

Three people dead, one in a coma - all ate mushrooms she served
She and her children miraculously unscathed
Ex-husband nearly dead several months ago from an unexplained gut issue
Dehydrator found dumped at municipal tip

Applying Occam's Razor, she is guilty.

Belladonna56 · 09/08/2023 10:44

It looks very suspicious. The only mushrooms I ever eat come in a pack from Sainsburys. I would never dream of picking them in the wild, there are too many that look ok but are poisonous.

CathyorClaire · 09/08/2023 10:45

I'm watching this with interest.

Anyone recall the case of the author (Nicholas Evans) who foraged mushrooms here (UK) and poisoned everyone who ate them?

Luckily all the guests survived but most ended up having to have organ transplants. I wouldn't have eaten foraged mushrooms before that but the story has really stuck with me.

FuppingEll · 09/08/2023 10:45

I really hate to see people trying to guess guilt from how someone behaves. I'm a fecking weirdo sometimes in times of stress, god knows what the baying mob would make of me if anything ever happened to someone close to me. People aren't robots, they don't always act predictably. I'm sure the truth will come out in time but until then I don't think everyone needs to pull apart the woman.

Good job you didn’t all die of poisoning after then.

KatharinaRosalie · 09/08/2023 10:49

Nicholas Evans and the mushroom poisoning

That story just baffles me. He said he thought they were picking ceps. Webcap looks absolutely nothing like a cep. Every single detail you would look at to identify a mushroom is different. It's like someone claiming they picked an apple and thought it was cabbage.

And when people asked why would someone eat wild mushrooms - because they're delicious! By the way, if you have ever eaten porcini pasta or risotto for example, or truffles, those have all been wild foraged, you can't farm that many mushrooms.

Australia has a bit of a track record for judging women’s guilt this way. Thinking of dingoes stealing babies and Australia’s “worst female serial killer.”

It really isn’t.

I’ve done it every Xmas and every visit by friends.

There are so many common foods I don’t eat (including g entire food groups), they’d barely eat if I served them what I eat.

I can understand fussy kids being given different food than the adults, but the fact that this woman is ok? Who cooks a meal for guests that they're not going to eat themselves? Very suspicious. You'd think she'd have eaten a little (or something else to make herself a bit ill) to deflect suspicion. And now the ex husband .... if it is as it seems though, how on earth did she expect to get away with it?

PriamFarrl · 09/08/2023 10:54

I react to stress and grief in an odd way too. I become very practical. Doesn’t make me guilty.

Could it be that the mushrooms were in a sauce or as a side that she didn’t have, rather than in the meal.

If the dehydrator was hers, she could have used crumbled up powdered mushrooms in the other meals and not put any on hers, no need for different meals

It wouldn't be difficult to make a dish with the mushrooms she bought from the local store and serve herself that one and then put the fragments of death cap mushrooms she'd previously dehydrated into the rest of the casserole or whatever and serve the tampered with casserole to the guests. If she plated up in the kitchen it would be easy to do. Most children are not fans of mushrooms, and that would be an easy excuse to make them a different easy lunch.

Or checking she doesn't having mascara running down her face?

There would have to be actual tears for that and she doesn’t appear to be wearing make up.

I wonder why the ex husband pulled out.
if he was suspicious surely he would have found a way to stop his family going too?
all very intriguing

Not a single tear, I was on a jury where the accused "cried" through the whole of his cross examination, he really shouldn't have given evidence as he didn't actually shed a tear, it really didn't help his verdict which was guilty; also if it was me I would be shouting the name of the store where I bought the mushrooms from the roof tops, she also avoids confirming whether or not there was actually mushrooms in the dish ... Dodgy as F. in my opinion.

Tears or lack of it mean nothing. We all respond to such things differently. There's a rather famous historic case where a mother was accused of not showing enough emotion and being cold. Not guilty.

When someone v close to me was involved in a life-changing accident, I copped it from two sides. One party said I was too emotional and needed to take it on the chin; another said that did I not realise how serious this was and that the victim still might die? Everyone has their own opinion on what constitutes an appropriate response.

(Still bitter btw)
