The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped

This has been all over the news. I live one town over from Leongatha and believe me, it's the talk of the towns.

We have loads of mushrooms around our place but wouldn't dream of eating them. About 90% of foraged mushrooms in Australia are poisonous.

Then again, you do get groups of people who think they know what they're doing, and perhaps they do.

Meanwhile this is suss-as.

Three people died from suspected mushroom poisoning after sharing a meal. Here's what we know - ABC News

Three dead and another fighting for life: What we know so far about suspected mushroom poisonings in Victoria

Police continue to investigate three suspected mushroom poisoning deaths after a family lunch last month in Leongatha in Victoria's east. Detectives have not laid any charges, but say the woman who served the meal remains a suspect. Here's what we know...

@velvetandsatin

Hate to break it to you (lol), but the jurors, should this come to trial, will be served a banquet of evidence, which is currently being amassed.

Well I would fucking hope so! Unlike many on this thread I don't think you can decide someone's guilt from watching a short video.

😂

Imagine the prosecution 😂 here, watch this video you can see how guilty she is from the way she wiped her eyes ...

No, they'll be seeing her do this in person at her trial - failing miserably at pretending and lying through her teeth. Plus the amassed evidence which almost unequivocally points straight st her!

IveHadItUpToHere · 17/08/2023 21:49

I quite like the principle of innocent until proven guilty. In fact, I more than like it. I think it's integral to the justice system. No-one here knows what happened and there has been lots of research about how first impressions of videos and even real life encounters are affected by so much internal prejudice that they should rarely be relied upon.
The book Blink is really good on how people make split second judgements and then try to justify them rather than looking at what impacted their judgements and taking that context into account. Public perceptions and performances of grief are so loaded that they often say more about the person judging them than the person grieving.

You forgot the crocs and the jelly fish.

There's been a couple of cases of mushroom deaths where I am, but all involving recent immigrants. Most Aussies would know it's bloody hard to tell the safe from the deadly mushrooms.

No powdering necessary, only experts can tell them apart @Stravaig .

Dammit!

Adds "crocs" and "jellyfish" to "DO NOT TOUCH" list.

Thanks for the reminder flurtle. The whole country just hates everybody, doesn't it?

Stravaig · 17/08/2023 22:04

@Emotionalsupportviper Don't forget the drop bears!

FerretFarago · 17/08/2023 22:32

Add stone fish, step on one at the beach and it could kill ya!

@Emotionalsupportviper Don't forget the drop bears!

😂 I was tempted to add those. Forgot the stonefish, wonder if we're missing any more natural hazards? Dust storms can be pretty dangerous if you're asthmatic. Oooh bushfires, floods.....

I think I'd have to agree our country would like to kill us all @Emotionalsupportviper

I mean a really angry kangaroo isn’t going to be much fun to be round - and aren’t’t platypus venomous?

my dd went through a phase of being obsessed by deadly animals and she now has no desire to visit Australia

ImustLearn2Cook · 17/08/2023 23:19

And don’t forget the blue ringed octopus. So small and pretty, but deadly.

I wouldn't go near a male kangaroo especially the big reds, they can pack a pretty mean punch. Platypus are venomous but you'd be super lucky to ever see one in the wild, they're not coming near you.

We might have a lot of deadly species but most people wouldn't encountering them, except maybe the spiders. I have run across a few venomous snakes but that was when we lived quite rurally and they all took off as soon as they saw me. I'm more worried about swopping magpies then deadly wildlife 🤣.

Lying multiple times, and even putting in writing that you have lied to the police, also says a fair bit about a person.

"Performance of grief" is an accurate term here.

The Heavenwards gaze, the dabbing away of non existent tears, the ''woe is ME'' {Rather than thinking of the people who are dead because of a meal she gave them}..The police still say Erin is a suspect- Only time will tell if she is exonerated or not.

Seems odd that her wealthy parents both died in the same year- Wonder if police will look at the circumstances into their deaths , too.

velvetandsatin · 18/08/2023 01:36

Someone on WS dug up the detail that her father actually died in 2011. I can't recall where they found it. Her mother then died in 2019.

Someone saying they both died in same year was wrong?

Someone should have fact checked before posting {Or cited published sources} An Eight year difference is much less suspicious.

@dustyblue (OP)

I think this thread is nearly full. I hope you start another one to follow this. We are all GRIPPED!

Oh yes, it will be the first time I've started a thread that needed a new thread (and no-one can take that away from me).

I'm off to lunch with a long-time-local friend who knows some of the people involved....if there's anything good to report I'll be back after I've checked the slander/defamation laws 😬

Has anyone mentioned the cassowaries? Even the birds want you dead.

Dustyblue · 18/08/2023 06:37

I forgot about the cassowaries! Total thread de-real but this from QLD has stayed with me:

I'd forgotten the cassowaries.

And wasn't there an Emu War? I can remember reading about it - I came across it by accident years ago. (The emus won)

And congratulations @Dustyblue on this.

Something to tell your grandchildren (if you survive the attempts of the outback to kill everyone on the planet!)

Thank you* *@ImustLearn2Cook - I was about to mention this delightful cephalopod when I thought I'd better check that no-one else had - and I'm glad I did or I would have looked even more of a 'nana than usual. Grin

Wouldn't surprise me if even the sheep and rabbits had developed a nasty homicidal streak - how else could they survive otherwise.

alwaysonadiet1 · 18/08/2023 07:16

Apologies if it's incorrect that her father died in 2019, I read it in a Daily Mail UK article from 12/8.

The Daily Mail seems to use 'sources said. ..' followed by 'the DM is not saying this/this doesn't mean the DM thinks this'. Add in a few 'allegedlys' and hopefully that will cover you for defamation 😄

Has anyone mentioned the gympie- gympie plant, a member of the nettle family with stinging hairs that are said to drive people to want to commit suicide.

DigbyTheDigger · 18/08/2023 07:42

I love the poo detail in the cassowary article. If I were in that situation (unlikely, as I live somewhere less terrifying) I too would be fearing for my life whilst hoping it didn’t shit on the new lino.

Please do!
Local info would be interesting- and I really hope that poor bloke survives.

Erin is just all about her from what I saw- moaning about the reporters on her doorstep.
No sorrow for the people who are dead because of her toxic meal.
Just a childlike strop because a reporter asked her questions.

I’ve been stung by one. Not fun and it was not even a huge sting- got my calf when I swung over a fallen tree on a bushwalk. It is one of the few things that can cause pain without causing any physical damage. I waxed my legs and that got rid of most of the fibres. Word of warning if you are ever stung- don’t run cold water over the site. Agony. Hot water only then hot, hot wax.
