Any Aussies not fond of summer?

Born and bred in Melbourne and I’ve always hated summer. Not so bad where I live now near the Bellarine Peninsula, my unit stays cool mostly and we get lots of sea breezes. Autumn and winter are my favourite seasons, I get to wear all the jumpers I’ve made and not have to drown in sweat and slather on sunscreen every time I set foot outdoors. (Still better than when I lived in Queensland, the humidity was dire.)

Any other no-thanks-to-summer outsiders here? :)

Of course. Summer is awful! It's okay leading up to Christmas because everyone's in a party mood but in January/February it's just too hot.

Spring and Autumn are by far the superior seasons.

wandawaves · 26/04/2023 05:07

Me!
I hibernate in summer. Anything over 24 degrees is too hot for me. So our current weather is beautiful, because I do actually love to sit in the sun, but I get hot sooo quickly when it's warm.

Theoldwoman · 26/04/2023 05:16

Twenty three degrees is my top temperature! I’m in my element right now for the next few months. I can breathe, I can move!!

BananaBender · 26/04/2023 05:23

Fuck summer. I’m in Brisbane. The humidity gets stupid. The recent cooler weather has been such a relief.

wandawaves · 26/04/2023 05:29

I couldn't live in Queensland, too humid and hot for me. I always say I'd love to live in Tasmania, except that, you know, it's Tasmania 😆

JambalayaOrGumbo · 26/04/2023 05:49

I live in SA - what do they say?? "the driest State in the driest Continent in the world"? I'm another non-fan of summer.

Autumn in SA is the best - and March & April are our most social, with all our Festivals include Fringe, Cabaret, Writer's Week etc. And if you're a petrol-head, you're also in your element here during Mad-March. We even got all the Aussie Rules the footy fans here recently!

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 05:49

I am gratified to see other Aussies who aren’t fond of our stinkin’ heat!

Summer this year was a bit weird here. February was quite mild for February, we didn’t get strings of 35+ days, but then out of the middle of nowhere we had a 36° day in late March!

My sister lives near Gympie and said it was barely starting to cool down there by the end of March.

@Theoldwoman 23 is as hot as it ever needs to get for me, too. I’d rather be able to wear long sleeves. I’m pale and burn easily.

I live in regional Southern QLD, 'up the mountain' from Brisbane (most people know where that is!). It's quite nice here. It's several degrees cooler than Brisbane & the coast, low humidity and almost always cool at night. it can get cold in winter. We rarely need air con.

But all we hear is whining over how cold it is!! So I think most people love the summer heat.

Autumn and spring are usually glorious.

chatw0o0 · 26/04/2023 05:55

Me! Am quite happy April-October (Syd) and have decided late teens/early 20s is my preferred temperature range. Can be comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt, although our not-very-well-insulated apartment can get a little chilly overnight.

PerryMenno · 26/04/2023 05:56

I love it! (Melbourne)

I do live on the coast, though. Am comfortable in 30+ temps and often travel to hot places to get more of it.

Winter is something to be endured. We've had gorgeous weather so far this week and it makes me sad that we probably won't see it again for 6 months.

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 05:57

It was like that when I lived in Qld, as soon as the temperature dropped to 20 or so the air was full of smoke from people lighting their wood fires - and we weren’t even near other houses. 🙄

Autumn is my favourite time of year once summer has packed its bags and buggered off!

Me too , hate the stinking hot days . I can handle up to late 20c but after that forget it . I’m in melbourne. The worst is the hot northerly winds and 40c . I mean, who in their right mind would like that ? lol . I came to Melbourne as a young teenager from England and I remember my first summer I was in bed for a week with massive sunburn! At least the last couple of summers have not seen the extreme heat as previous years . It’s actually been lovely. Gorgeous weather today too .

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 06:15

Melbourne’s northerlies are foul!

Yes, the weather’s been lovely here today, too. Supposed to be 23 and rain tomorrow though, ugh. Sticky.

I don't hate it exactly but the school run in Feb is pretty awful. It's right over the peak temperature and even ice blocks lose their appeal after the first week back!

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 06:37

I always think February is the worst time to be going back to school. I had a 40 minute walk home in the ‘70s, no shade at that time of day and no schools except posh ones like MLC had hats, and my school uniform was probably pure polyester. 🥵

spottygymbag · 26/04/2023 06:43

Yeah it's brutal. I leave work at 2.30 and dont get home til 4.30 after a double pick up. Some days we literally lie down on the cold floor in the air con as soon as we get inside 😂

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/04/2023 07:11

After nearly 2 decades in the UK I bloody well love summer, especially an Adelaide summer - Melbourne summer is too lightweight for me.

Although being fair, without an air conditioner it would be brutal, and my job has the flexibility to allow me to pick up my DC from school on the worst days. And humidity is generally pretty low in Adelaide as well.

Evenings outside (smothered in aeroguard, naturally), are fabulous.

I even bought a laser projector and will set up outdoor movie nights next summer!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hmm, a hammock might be nice, too.

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 08:04

I don’t think I could cope with Adelaide heat!

The worst Melbourne summer I ever knew was the year of Black Saturday. I remember walking home from the station when it was over 43° and thinking it felt like having my arms in an oven, the air was so hot on my skin. Terrible year.

No, I love summer! After more than four decades of freezing my tits off in the UK and Ireland, I have had more than my fair share of cold and rain, which is one reason I moved to Perth. I absolutely love the heat, and dread winter, even though it doesn't even really get THAT cold here (except now I've acclimatised like everyone else I'm rugged up if it drops below 20. My god I remember going to the beach in Ireland on a 20-degree day, here I have my Oodie on! So roll on spring, and thank god for the pool beach, and aircon! Bring on the days when you are almost scared to breathe through your nose in case your nostril airs catch fire, and the seat belt can brand you for life!😀

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/04/2023 09:26

@LunaMay - if they're proper Balfour ones, you're definitely invited!!!

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/04/2023 09:42

Scratch that, any cake will do!!

wyntersuhn · 26/04/2023 10:23

Qlder here. I love spring, autumn and winter. Not the biggest fan of summer, but the worst bit is from Aust Day until the end of Feb. Atrocious!

Starlia · 26/04/2023 11:42

I’m in Brisbane. We are currently in my favourite time of the year. Autumn is glorious, cool nights, mild days. The sun isn’t actively trying to kill you.
I love every season except summer lol.

Missingthegore · 26/04/2023 12:33

I have horrific hayfever so spring is the enemy for me, the 24+ nights have had me weeping before. Adore the autumn weather, this week has been a ripper!
