I wanted to do Sophie’s dream as I’ve done 2 Sophie’s universe’s before. I decided to get my own yarn as I didn’t like all the greens in the colour pack. Now I’ve finished I really don’t think I like it! None of the colours go together.
Ah well, never mind! I’ll maybe stick it in a drawer somewhere and see if it grows on me.

It's beautiful!

Semiramide · 17/12/2024 00:20

It's beautiful. Once it's framed, turned into a cushion or whatever, it'll be gorgeous. .

ShouldIEvenBother · 17/12/2024 00:32

Such a huge amount of detail in this OP, a lot of work. It's really, really beautiful. Please take it to a professional framers so you can proudly hang it and do it justice!

ChristmasIsComingVerySoon · 17/12/2024 00:35

Beautiful! Love the colours together.

LoafofSellotape · 17/12/2024 00:36

It's stunning! When I finish a big project I always hate it,I need to put it away for a month and then look at it with fresh eyes.

The4teddybears · 17/12/2024 00:38

It’s lovely. Rich and beautiful. You should be very proud

LauderSyme · 17/12/2024 00:40

I love it, it's fabulous! Very Kandinsky-esque, if that's not too trite a reference.

The colours that work best together are always opposites on the colour wheel. If I was you I would frame it and hang it and be most satisfied in the observance of it.

It's a blanket!

CrochetBug · 17/12/2024 00:45

I think it's lovely.

Mipil · 17/12/2024 00:48

It’s lovely! I like it better than the original.

I’m guessing you had a slightly different idea in your head and it’s not quite what you intended so you can’t see how lovely it is because it isn’t quite what you envisioned.

It’s amazing and really beautiful.

DramaAlpaca · 17/12/2024 00:51

Honestly, it's gorgeous.

BookShark · 17/12/2024 00:54

I'm with you OP. I really like the idea of Sophie's Dream, but none of the colour ways really work for me. I wonder if I might be better just doing it in one colour, but alternating the in and out if that makes any sense, so you get one dark middle next to one light middle, but in the same colour e.g. blue across the whole blanket.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful pattern and I've done a Sophie, so I know how much work it is. I just don't think you can put so many different colours together.

Floralnomad · 17/12/2024 00:58

I like it but I find the bright yellow one is a bit jarring , I really like yellow but I’m not sure it fits there , unless that is the point .

I agree that it is very different from the other squares, which are very subtle, but I think it works because it creates a focal point.

It's a blanket!

Yes, I know.

It could be framed as a wall hanging.

CurlyWurly41 · 17/12/2024 07:24

Thanks all, I really appreciate the replies. I think I’ll put it away for a while and look at it again after Christmas. I think you’re right- several different shades of the same colour might work better. I was planning to find something else to do first to get a break from Sophie’s but I might just have to do another one now. 😂

Agree- the yellow is a bit bright. I used yellow for the borders in the end in the hope that it would blend it in a bit.

Gosh it's like a painting! What beautiful work ❤️

TotallyTwisted · 17/12/2024 08:19

Is everyone else on glue?! I can tell it's beautifully made but the colours don't go together AT ALL. Too many clashing shades.

Mercurial123 · 17/12/2024 08:23

The colours are not cohesive and don't work well together.

CurlyWurly41 · 17/12/2024 08:36

I happen to agree! I love the pattern- it’s beautiful but my colour choice was poor. Lesson learned I guess.

You could try replacing the yellow joins and borders with a darker more neutral colour. Or even just lay the yarn down on top of the yellow to see if it looks better rather than taking it apart first.

TianasBayou · 17/12/2024 08:55

I love the individual squares but not so keen on the arrangement as I find the yellow stands out.

Would it be a lot of work to unpick the borders and rearrange? I'd either omit the yellow square and replace it with another green/blue.
Or arrange the squares as an ombré with the yellow in one corner. And audition a more neutral shade for the borders.

I make scrappy quilts and often have the block up on my design wall for weeks whilst I tweak the arrangement. Another helpful trick is to take a black & white photo to understand the balance and contrast, without the colour.

Does this help?
