pd- very naughty.. sorry you missed out on your work shop... will they be holding another sometime soon?

whoopsi- its really easy to set a blog up.. but you need to decide where you want to have it.. blogspot.com or typepad... I can't remeber the other one or two... I can help you with blogger.. its really quite simple... as for what you put in it thats entirely up to you... but i find it a useful outlet for venting my creativity... my dad and my best friends in the states read it regularly so its a way to keep connected.. I am a terrible letter writer.. and an infrequent e-mailer... once you get into the swing of it its quite fun really.. and its nice to get people to leave comments and then see what they are doing on their blogs. feel free to ask me any questions.. or of any of the others everyone is helpful here.

Have blogged

Miaou · 06/07/2008 11:53

Whoops, I'm on WordPress, which is nice, but quite techy (I blame dh ). I know my family often look at it, as well as RL friends.

BTW folks, I am having a birthday giveaway - don't all rush at once

oggsfrog · 06/07/2008 14:26

Miaou, I love the project bag you made. Please share the pattern if you can remember it .

Whizzz · 06/07/2008 14:48

Hi all - I have just about managed to complete my 'Bollywood Magic' Mystery bag challenge * have Blogged it
Apart from that I haven't done much crafting at all. I can't decide whether to do a school craft fair next weekend. I did the same one last year & only sold about £30 of stuff, so I can't decide if it will be worth it or not

Miaou · 06/07/2008 16:41

oggsfrog, it is from this book - the one on the front in fact! But I had to alter the pattern to make it work (the sizes given for the lining and the scarf are too small) so if you are making it let me know and I'll tell you the correct lengths!

Miaou, sorry, that bag is gorgeous (especially love the fabric used for the lining and the handles, and I left a comment on your blog to be in with a chance of winning it )(your version is much nicer than the one on the book), but the bag I was talking about was the one you knitted and lined with the cat fabric

Tillyboo · 06/07/2008 19:12

Hope everyone has had a nice Sunday ?

I need to catch up with everyone's posts and blogs but I have just blogged what I've been up to today.

Have been like a zombie as we went out last night for our anniversary and dd decided to wake up at 6.30am this morning, how considerate of her.

Dior, I know, it's really annoying (I made another bag from that book and that was wrong too )

Oooh yes oggsfrog, I misread your post !!

I was intending to write down the pattern anyway. I will have a think ... it might be a bit vague though as I am doing it from memory, so hope it's right!

OK - 9mm needles and chunky wool (I used King Cole Twister), cast on 30 sts.
Knit four rows.
Next row: p
Knit four rows.

Next row: k1, k into front and back of next st, continue to end of row. 45 sts.

Starting with a p row, continue in stocking stitch until knitting measures 58cm from end of garter st (approx 76 rows), ending with a p row.

Next row: [k1, k2tog] to end of row. 30 sts.
Knit four rows.
Next row: p
Knit four rows. Cast off.

To make up
Fold the garter stitch section in half so that the p row is uppermost and at the top of the bag. Using double thickness sewing thread to match the yarn, firmly sew along the edge where the garter stitch meets. Repeat for other end.

With right sides facing, fold the knitting in half with the garter stitch sections at the top. Using double thickness sewing thread, join the sides of the bag.

Still with right sides together, open out the bottom corner and line up the side seam with the bottom of the bag. Measure 6cm in from the point and pin in a line perpendicular to the seam (thereby creating a "triangle"). Sew along this seam, taking care to make stitches as firm as possible and sewing over the ends several times. Repeat at the other side.

Handles - Make 2
Cast on 30 sts.
First row: k each st tbl
k 5 rows. Cast off tightly.

Using double-thickness sewing thread, sew cast on and cast off edges together. By knitting tbl on the first row the handles will naturally curve round.

To attach handles: sew handle to bag where garter stitch meets stocking stitch. Using a tape measure, pin each end of the handle a third of the way along from the seam. Stitch firmly using double thickness sewing thread. Repeat for other handle.

For lining: Cut 2 pieces of fabric approx 50cm x 35cm (finished size of lining approx 45cm x 30cm). With right sides together and using a sewing machine, pin and sew along sides and bottom of fabric. Press open seams.

As with the knitted part of the bag, with right sides still facing, open out the bottom corner and line up the bottom seam with the side seam.Put a pin through the two seams to keep them lined up. Measure 6cm in from the point and draw a line with a pencil perpendicular to the seam. Machine stitch along the line, reverse stitching at the ends. Trim off the triangle of fabric and zigzag over the ends. Repeat with the other corner.

To attach the lining: Turn the knitted bag inside out and put it inside the lining so that the lining print is facing outwards. Pin the fabric to the knitted bag at the base of the garter stitch band, making small regular pleats in the fabric to fit it properly. Using double thickness sewing thread, slip stitch the lining to the knitted bag, taking care to stitch firmly where it meets the handles.

Turn bag right side out and you are done!

Hope that all makes sense to you. I'm glad you gave me the push to write it down actually - I might make another one now! Oh btw I used 3 and a bit balls of yarn, it's quite yarn-hungry.

If you have any probs understanding it then just let me know and I'll talk you through it!

oggsfrog · 06/07/2008 20:29

Thankyou

What does tbl mean? I'm a bit of a beginner knitter tbh but the bag was so lovely (and the yarn) that I wanted to have a go at it.

I might be being a bit ambitious as all I've made up to now is a scarf, and a hat for dd. I'm currently tackling a very simple bag out of stich 'n' bitch and am freestyling a little pouch for my inhaler.

ranting · 06/07/2008 20:32

Evening.
Oggs, tbl means to knit 'through the back of the loop, so instead of knitting into the front, put the rh needle into the back of the stitch to be knitted.

oggsfrog · 06/07/2008 20:51

Thanks Ranting , that's something else I'll have to learn. At moment my repertoire consists of knit, purl and decrease .

That's OK oggsfrog (forgot to explain tbl, sorry , thanks for explaining ranting!). It's really very simple to make, just garter st and stocking stitch. Squaring off the bottom (which I did by stitching rather than decreasing) is what gives it such a nice shape. Do let me see the result if you have a go!

mistypeaks · 07/07/2008 10:53

Have commented Dior.
Miaou - I'm knitting a bag at the moment. (fairly sure no-one will be asking me for the pattern - just as well really - I didn't know it was going to be a bag until yesterday!!)I will be needing to line this one though as its only dk wool instead of the superchunky I used on my unlined bag. So quick question.. Is it fairly easy to attach the lining onto a knitted bag. tbh the thought is filling me with dread!!

ranting · 07/07/2008 10:56

Yes, make up the lining (you knew I was going to answer this, didn't you), then pin it to the bag, until you're happy with the fit and then handsew it on. That is the bit I loathe, the hand sewing!

lol Dior!!! When you have something beautiful and new you have to don't you. After buying my new red shoes (see blog) I wore them to Tesco. DH commented I was a bit dressed up for shopping. I had to reply "Yeah but where else do I go?" He did concede I was the foxiest woman in Tesco!! .
ranting - yes I had an incling you would leap on that question! Do you have an alert on your computer that beeps if someone says 'lining'? . I don't mind handsewing really. Just a little concerned about fabric on wool. Would you sew from the fabric side rather than the wool side? Its all confusing. Sewing wool to wool - use wool. Sewing fabric use cotton? aaaaaaaaaaaaargh. Of course I've still to buy the lining.

ranting · 07/07/2008 11:09

I turn the bag inside out and sew it wrong side to wrong side, so the wrong side of the knitted fabric facing the wrong side of the lining iyswim
