You know I keep thinking about this. I'm really that there are people out there who actually say 'I hate home made stuff'. It's like saying "I hate people caring and making a special effort. I hate people that can't always afford to buy the latest gizmo or top brand perfume etc." Or even worse 'I hate you and all the gifts you've ever given me'.
(sorry rant over)

lucykate · 25/06/2008 21:21

i've had handmade gifts not go down well quite a few times. makes me feel quite sorry for the recipient when they fail to see the value in something like that, time is a valuable commodity, and when someone is willing to give their own time up to that extent, to make a gift, it should be treasured, not sniffed at.

Well exactly LK, it's a bit like saying, "Money is everything" isn't it

Ummmm - not sure about jg - do you have her email? Can you send her a copy of the one I sent you?

Oh - and anyone have JackBlackRoady's email?

vInTaGeVioLeT · 26/06/2008 00:46

i have JBR's addy.

lucykate · 26/06/2008 07:31

i've emailed dingle

justkeepswimming · 26/06/2008 13:55

quick q - do you attach a label to your finished items saying that you made it?
dh thinks i should have a sticker or something on the back of the cards but i feel a bit sheepish about it.
maybe some kind of made up stamp that said 'made by...'?

Dingle · 26/06/2008 14:15

OMG- just finished my second sympathy card and I am so glad they are out of the way. Not nice to make at the best of times!

Right, kick up the crafty backside needed-what shall I do next?

justkeepswimming · 26/06/2008 14:22

dingle - glad you have finished them - did you just change the wording bit on the first one?
i think they do the job very nicely indeed.
i was just thinking about making sympathy cards earlier, an elderly neighbour is v ill in hosp and they have told him there is nothing more they can do for him
not sure i can put enthusiasm into something sad, if that makes sense.

i mean getting out all the bits, sitting down with glass of wine in the evening and then thinking about death...

am trying to make a new baby card atm - much more my kind of thing! but it's not working, argh. ds1 will be up any minute and ds2 currently happy on the floor but not for much longer. must get off here and finish it!

Dingle · 26/06/2008 14:32

Yes- I just cut off the complete bottom part of the card, flush with the paper, reprinted the wording onto another card minus the typo and bad grammar and then stuck the paper(with a card backing)onto the new black!

I told myself to make a couple more up of the same designs to keep in my stock box, but it just seemed so depressing.

justkeepswimming · 26/06/2008 14:38

even just buying the black card would be depressing enough.
but i suppose it would be handy to have a few made up already...
so far it takes me so long to just make one (cos i'm so indecisive) that i will never get any spare!

right, totally changed my mind on this baby one, leaving the half-done one to be a birthday card another time (ooh a nearly spare one then!!).

got to start all over but will have to be tonight now.

Miaou · 26/06/2008 17:20

jks - definitely put a label on of some kind - don't be shy about promoting yourself!

I'm just in the process of looking at getting labels made for me (woven ones though, as I am more of a fabric person )

meridian · 26/06/2008 18:24

jks- you should definitly put labels on... then they know who made the card and where to go to order more.

jeangenie · 26/06/2008 18:36

yep - labels rock - I love seeing a label saying that it is handmade on any handmade stuff I buy, the more personal the better so a little stamp rather than a stick on label would be fab

I put labels on everything and I don't even sell anything it's called "tagitis" watch out, it may be contagious...

but of course Meridian...I knit a little collar for every bottle and jar, just so I can stitch on a little "overmilkwood" label to teh ketchup and mayo...

mistypeaks · 27/06/2008 09:00

swimming - don't look at it as thinking about death. Think of it as celebrating a life and marking it with some kind of permanence (and doing it personally is always nicer). I know it sounds trite but its true. Any cards are for the living anyway. It offers comfort to know people are thinking of them and is nice if there is some element of the person who is gone there (rather than hallmark/clinton's impression of who they could have been).
Recently my best friends grandad died. I had no time to make a card and was mooching around looking for something. Whilst I was looking I found a 'all occassions' card that had a picture of a National Trust Bluebell Forest on it. I had to have it and just put a note in it saying I know it's not a sympathy card, but when I saw it I thought of xxxx I know he would have loved it here and hopefully he can now visit places like this whenever he wants to. She thought it was lovely and agreed with the sentiment.
And onto a happier topic. I have labels too!!

Miaou · 27/06/2008 09:24

room for one more?

i haven't done any crafting for ages thanks to new baby (not so new any more). but we just had some work done on the house and i now have a whole room for working and stashing so i'm full of new projects and ideas all of a sudden.

i dabble in anything textilish, at the moment mostly sewing. i love chatting about projects and stuff, it's just not always easy to find people who are genuinely interested!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 27/06/2008 10:47

hi puppydavies - there's always room for one more it's like a tardis in here!!!

thanks for welcome

i like to do anything i haven't done before, mostly at the moment i'm working on a couple of quilts and knitting a nappy cover. i'm going on a natural dyeing workshop next weekend so i'm sure that will be my next obsession. like i said, i dabble - knitting, crochet, spinning, dyeing, my only major omission is weaving but i doubt that will last long.

i do have a blog: stitch but i'm oddly shy about people actually reading it - i've kept it for so long as a kind of journal i forget it's public some times...

mistypeaks · 27/06/2008 11:21

Hello puppy. I think there's room for one more!!! Some of us seem to do nothing more than chat about it though!!! Must must must get on with it. Knitting project is underway . . . . . My needles need new batteries or something very slow
