I love that fabric too @ClearHoldBuild .

I’ve cut out the Fibre Mood Elaine. I’m using French terry and thinking I should interface the neck facing but I don’t have any knit interfacing. Do you think woven would do, given it’s not in an area that will stretch? Or should I be patient and nip to the fabric shop tomorrow?

ClearHoldBuild · 09/02/2025 16:19

Thanks @Hiddendoor and @twobluechickens finished the fabric godmother aspen dress this morning. I took 10 inches off of the length so it’s knee length.

I've been tasked with making a small lap blanket to incorporate a Star of David motif. There are lots of five pointed star ideas but not many six pointed stars!

I found this but it's not quite what I had in mind.

www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/star-of-david-2

I would prefer a square motif but don't mind a star motif and could just join as I go.

It's got to made it fairly quickly so I don't want anything intricate.

I've previously made her this which she loves

seeloveshare.it/single-post/menorah-bobble-stitch-pillow-free-crochet-pattern/

Or if anyone has any other ideas for a small lap blanket. I have four balls/skeins of blue and two of white DK.

Chuchoter · 09/02/2025 17:09

Do you think this would work with the middle in white and the second and third rows in blue and I join the stars as I go?

PickAChew · 09/02/2025 17:22

@twobluechickens it might not have to stretch but will get manipulated a lot as you take it on and off. Woven would be more likely than knit to pull away unless very well stitched down at the facing edge.

That looks great @ClearHoldBuild and you're a fast sewer!

Can't comment on the technicalities of crochet, @Chuchoter but there's a few YouTube videos featuring star of David motifs. This one is crocheted in rows rather than as a granny square. I didn't have the sound on though I expect it uses US terminology. The hard bit with the granny squares looks to be getting convincingly pointy points.

@twobluechickens I didn’t interface the facing on the Elaine, but I didn’t use French Terry. I don’t know the technical name but it’s a soft backed sweatshirt fabric. Probably not much help sorry.

@ClearHoldBuild that dress looks lovely.

ClearHoldBuild · 09/02/2025 17:56

Thanks @PickAChew & @DiggoryVenn
I started it Saturday after cutting it out on Friday, finished it this morning.

Chuchoter · 09/02/2025 18:23

Thank you @PickAChew
I've been crocheting since the 70s so I'm what you would call 'expert' level! I want something that is fast to make up as I don't have a lot of time to complete it by.

I can also follow American patterns easily. I like the one you have linked to and I could add a border and make a patchwork of those squares.

Thank you, I really it.

twobluechickens · 09/02/2025 19:24

Thanks all - I will nip to the fabric shop tomorrow and get some knit interfacing. I don’t think the French terry has enough strength/stability on its own.

I'm a fairly competent knitter (though avoid stranded colourwork because I knit for relaxation!) but a failed crochet-er so didn't want to make any assumptions!

Frumpyunicorn · 10/02/2025 10:24

I have been making a toile of the TAL cuff dress and have some fabric arriving this week for it. I have also cut out a toile of the cubic bag @Jins recommended. However there is a problem with my sewing machine so I am back to my old one while I get it fixed, so will probably continue with small projects and leave the cuff dress until my machine is returned.

I was given a bag of fabric from a colleague and have about 4m of this black holographic fabric. I can’t imagine what to make. Any suggestions for makes?

I’ve tried to take a picture that actually shows what it looks like.

@ClearHoldBuild what about a non-practical kimono style dressing gown?

I do like the sound of that! 👘

placemats · 11/02/2025 21:31

Do you mind if I join this thread? It's an absolute wealth of information.

I've so many projects on the go. However I do need to declutter before I start afresh.

50IsTheNew21 · 11/02/2025 23:36

Has anybody seen the new release patterns that are dropping this spring?

So many lovely patterns. I have my eye on Simplicity S3110 and S3098.

When are they usually available in shops? I may have already brought the fabric. LMAO. There goes my plans to not buy more fabric until I have completed a couple of projects. (hangs head in shame).

Welcome @placemats. I am new here too. Fab thread with lots of helpful tips/info.

Jins · 12/02/2025 07:47

Welcome new joiners!

@ClearHoldBuild i have no ideas for the holographic fabric but 4m is the sort of length that you almost feel obliged to do something with it. I agree with the kimono idea. I immediately thought of posh pyjamas but a kimono is a better plan.

Still no clothes sewing here as I’m still trying desperately to lose a few inches. However the replacement curtain lining fabric has arrived so I guess I’ll be doing some sewing soon. Curtains aren’t my favourite thing to sew. I’ve also been through all my free patterns and found several bag/backpack patterns which might stash bust a few bits and pieces. I’m also going to make some of the cubic bags for my holiday.

There are a few useful patterns in the Ellie and Mac weekly sale. I quite fancy the ruched tee

PickAChew · 12/02/2025 07:53

Hi, @50IsTheNew21 sew direct is the official retailer that gets big 4 patterns in before anyone else. I had to fight through lawnmowers to find this 😅

www.sewdirect.com/product/simplicity-s3110/?srsltid=AfmBOoru0-ufMht-QpgMbpZUv8s7g2QCFB-xOimKcODtxhO4aFuKWbgu

ShoAndSew · 12/02/2025 07:58

@ClearHoldBuild for the black holographic? not my taste for clothes so I'd probably make it into tote bags or zippered box pouches. Or gift bags.

The other? deffo kimono style dressing gown.

Welcome @placemats !

twobluechickens · 12/02/2025 08:54

Welcome welcome! Let us be your enablers, yes you definitely should buy that fabric and/or that pattern!

@50IsTheNew21 I just bought the Ayora jacket by Pauline Alice and despite saying I was only going to use fabric from my stash until I’ve used it all up, there’s nothing quite right for this pattern and it also needs a lining fabric 😂 I’m going to the Stitch festival in March so will look for something there, maybe make something out of all my scraps for now.

50IsTheNew21 · 12/02/2025 11:11

@twobluechickens That is a cute jacket. It is so hard to stop buying fabric LOL.

Just had a look at the site for the Stitch festival and it looks really good. Have you been before? I may have to snag a ticket just for the workshops, let alone the shopping.

twobluechickens · 12/02/2025 16:04

I went last year on the Saturday which was ridiculously busy in the morning but very pleasant in the afternoon. I think you need to book workshops in advance as they sell out. It’s a great show, I was fairly restrained last year until I got to the Rainbow Fabrics stall and then all hell broke loose.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 12/02/2025 20:32

Rainbow Fabrics is ridiculously tempting online @twobluechickens, I can't imagine the damage that would result from me being there in person. Grin

twobluechickens · 12/02/2025 21:46

The staff are total enablers too (obvs). I got some lovely viscose linens for £9 a metre plus some other fabrics for £4/m. They will be my first stop when we go next month!
