all of you struggling with resolutions need to do what i do: I don't make New Year Resolutions. That's a losing game, middle of winter when you don't feel like much.

Spring is a far far better time to try something new, when the world starts to renew itself, light is better etc etc. You know it makes sense!

CrimsonAlligator · 02/01/2025 17:21

@ShoAndSew French Terry could be a good option for that half zip you were asking about for your DD. It’s easy to work with (especially compared to fleece fabric), nice to wear and comes in comes in lots of prints, as well as plain options.

OperationalSupport · 02/01/2025 22:41

@CrimsonAlligator I’m intrigued by the fuchsia/blue oxford - was it available online?

I'm not planning a buying ban, but I do want to use more than I buy this year, or sort through my stash and donate some. I have some that I think just won’t get used, like half yard cuts of kids jersey prints and my lanky kids are now too tall for the pattern pieces to fit on a half yard. I also have some cuts of black rayon and suiting, but my current workplace doesn’t have a monochrome dress code and I don’t enjoy wearing black, so I think some form of destashing might be in order.

CrimsonAlligator · 03/01/2025 00:48

@OperationalSupport here’s the link: https://www.minerva.com/mp/1/MTM-TB5001-M/MTM-TB5001 - it’s the indigo night & fuchsia one. I ended up buying some yesterday, as there was a 20% discount on all Minerva fabrics, which made the price a little more bearable.

Marcipex · 03/01/2025 00:55

Please can I join?
My sewing machine is broken but I would like to make a simple patchwork with scraps.
Maybe paper piecing but I hate tacking.

oh yes, i was thinking that when you explained what it is. Now i just need to find out what it's called in German (probably "sweatshirtstoff" knowing them)

In Dutch it’s called “badstof” (bathing fabric). May well be the same, or similar in German.

Welcome to the thread @Marcipex.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/01/2025 10:06

Hi @Marcipex, you're welcome.

Would you glue baste for paper piecing? I have a glue pen that is for that purpose but I think a Pritt stick would also do. You put the glue on the paper/card and the glue needs to be not too weak so the fabric stays on while you sew but not too strong so that you can remove the paper after sewing.

Or Daisy and Grace do fantastic quilt as you go templates that can be sewn by machine or by hand. I'm making this bag by hand at the moment, very, very, very slowly. https://www.daisyandgrace.co.uk/products/quilt-as-you-go-large-bag-template-set?pos=2&sid=408ddd640&ss=r

There is a Missouri Star YouTube about the Daisy and Grace method if you're interested.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I like the quilt as you go suggestion, though I don't really understand what to do; I will look into it. Thanks

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/01/2025 19:58

It's pretty quick once you get the hang of it. I forgot that I made this little bowl from 6 of them using Bosal in-R-form as the wadding to make it stand up (it's stiff and puffy) and it was really quick. I did machine sew quite a bit of it but also hand stitched a lot because the shape of it means that it doesn't fit under the machine needle once it starts going together.

Do any of you have Plus size pattern recommendations for a Jacquard fabric. For a wedding guest dress.
Also a plus size dress using a chiffon overlay again for a wedding guest dress.
Thanks x

DiggoryVenn · 04/01/2025 16:38

I completely missed this thread.

@CrimsonAlligator I love what you made with your tiger fabric - I was the one that made a dress out of the viscose tiger fabric.

Even though I have three pieces of fabric on order with the Draper's Daughter, I have just bought another two pieces in a shop in Dorchester today. One is a really soft sweatshirt material and I am going to make the Fibremood Elaine. The other is a floral cotton that looks like denim but isn't.

And to cap it off, I have just bought two lengths of ribbing for the sweatshirt, because I couldn't decide which contrasting colour to go with.

Have a look at the Cashmerette Upton dress. It's mix and match so lots of options and lends itself well to the overlay. Jenny released the Mansfield dress which mixes and matches with the Upton even more for last month's Cashmerette Club and there were samples with an overlay which were lovely.

Hope this is ok to share, made a couple of puff quilts last year which got me loving sewing again. I consider myself an enthusiastic beginner. I figure what’s the worst that can happen. Made these yesterday and finished them this morning. My first ever trousers. Simple pattern, the Loddon pant from Style Arc, I’m chuffed that they fit, I correctly added an inch to the length because I was unsure if they would be long enough.

Those are fabulous @ClearHoldBuild, the finish is so neat. I bet they are wonderfully swishy as you walk.

123ZYX · 05/01/2025 18:39

They're are excellent @ClearHoldBuild. What type of fabric have you used?

twobluechickens · 05/01/2025 20:51

Fab trousers @ClearHoldBuild and welcome @Marcipex ! I don’t quilt (god knows I have enough hobbies already, plus zero patience) but I follow various quilters on IG.

I’ve just finished McCalls 7360. Decided I fancied a palate cleanser after the jeans that didn’t fit. The pattern notches didn’t match in several places which was a bit annoying but I’ve made multiple tops like this before so no biggie. Did an FBA and pleased with the result. Going to make several more because it really suits me!

I used this fabric https://www.rainbowfabrics.co.uk/products/black-white-mini-polka-viscose-crepe
with a discount using VIP!RUAN

I made some Safiya trousers in exactly this fabric last year. They proved very useful in the summer. Your pattern is gorgeous.

OperationalSupport · 05/01/2025 22:36

@ClearHoldBuild lovely trousers, well done.

Im currently making a t-shirt quilt and it’s a nightmare. I’d never done one before, and I definitely have learnt some lessons about what not to do, but I’m at the finishing stage and can’t wait for it to be done with so I can move on to something more fun.

My last few garment makes have been successes, and I hope that means that I’m finally getting there with making things that fit my personal style instead of being influenced by Instagram into making what’s popular. I want to make trousers and some smart casual tops, I’ve got heaps of patterns and fabrics stashed so I think I need to shop my stash over the next few weeks and make some plans!

Bought 3m of this Burgundy & Black Checkered Wool Touch Fabric.
Any suggestions, I was thinking either a pinafore or trousers.

I’m missing getting stuck into a project but not enough to start the bedroom curtains. I’m waiting for lining fabric in any case.

I’ve done a few repairs - no idea why DS2 goes through the crotch on his jeans so quickly and don’t really want to know. I’ve sorted through my patterns (and bought a few) and I’m vaguely planning projects for spring and summer.

Hello all, ambitious newbie here. Just received some sewing patterns I ordered and I am so excited.

I am starting to work with zips, so I am going to try to make a McCall's bomber jacket and after that the Alba jacket by Sinclair.
