.... a question

Can you felt other 100% wool thinks besides knitted jumpers?

I only ask as I'm sure I have a shawl somewhere in a suitcase that is wool but as it's not used for its purpose could maybe made into something else

It's woven

the wool jumper i had my eye on has been sold
it was truthfully the ugliest jumper i've ever seen who the heck would've bought it? i suspect a "felter"

now i did see a pure wool blanket [50's style] d'ya think that'd felt it was pure wool but big so i wonder whether it'd have enough room in the machine? - i gave a pile of these away a couple of years ago to canine defence and that's exactly why i hoard everything you just never know when it may come in handy - at least some little dogs stayed warm that winter!!!

lucykate · 13/03/2008 18:16

wool blankets felt beautifully, they are the best!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 13/03/2008 18:28

fantastic - i will go and buy them tomorrow after the EASTER BONNET PARADE!!!!

mmmm......might dye them too - i've got a load of dyes from when i used to be the buyer from DYLON at work i knew they'd come in handy one day!

lucykate · 13/03/2008 20:08

miaou, this gives some info about felting and knitting wool

lucykate · 13/03/2008 20:08

fio, do you have a video camera?, film it, stick it on you tube

fizzbuzz · 13/03/2008 20:14

You can felt things with boiling water, soap and a rolling pin, rather than putting them in the machine.

You can keep a check on what's hppening to it then...............

Miaou · 13/03/2008 21:12

thanks lk, just what I was looking for!

Miaou · 14/03/2008 13:38

Well I have bought a 100% angora beige sweater this morning (charity shop!!), and it is currently in the washing machine with a pair of jeans at 60 degrees ... fingers crossed!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 14/03/2008 14:41

i got a wool blanket today and found a box of cerise washing machine dye - it say not for use on wool but i guess that's because you shouldn't wash wool on hot so i'll give it a go - the blanket was only 99p and the dye was a freebie so not a lot to lose - at the moment there is a blanket on a 90 degree wash going but it had no label so i've no idea if it'll felt

i feel quite excited [saddo]

dizzyday07 · 14/03/2008 14:59

I washed mine again and there was no change so I binned it!!

Better luck next time

Well my jumper felted beautifully! Only ... I didn't keep taking it out to check it and the back has felted to the front

I'm in the process of seeing if they can be separated - at the moment I've enough to make a tea cosy! Never mind will chalk it up to experience if it's a total disaster!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 14/03/2008 17:27

well unknown fibre blanket didn't felt but it's lovely and clean!!!!!

so i'm going to try the 100% wool one tomorrow - i emailed betz white about dying it today and she replied already !!! i felt a bit star struck

Miaou · 15/03/2008 14:54

Heehee - I have just ordered some needle felting stuff and am going to have a go at making a needle felted tea cosy for my mum - can't wait until it arrives now! In the meantime I have stuffed my ruined jumper with plastic bags whilst it dries to give it more of a 3d shape.

vInTaGeVioLeT · 15/03/2008 23:37

right - wool blanket has been washed once on 40c and looks to have started changing - it's now in the machine on 60c with a cerise machine dye but i really cant stay up all night felting a blanket - can i ?!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 16/03/2008 01:16

update - it has dyed really well - now it's in for a 90c wash but i really have to go to bed now as i will be woken by a 3 yr old shouting at me at 7am - i will put it on my blog tomorrow - i did craft i did craft

Miaou · 16/03/2008 09:16

lol VV at you crafting at 1am

How does it look this morning?

vInTaGeVioLeT · 16/03/2008 09:35

yawn YAWN yawn why do i do it? !!!!
well it's looking good but when i cut it ,it frayed a bit so i've put it in for another 90c wash!!! it's a little patchy in places but that's really because it's a big blanket and there was probably not enough room for it to move about freely[slight tyedye effect!!!]

vInTaGeVioLeT · 16/03/2008 09:36

oh and it's not shrunk much either - i was expecting major shrinkage!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 16/03/2008 12:42

i know i'm yabbering away to myself here but
update ooooooohhhhhhhhh it's gorgeous!! my machine is covered in fluff[slightly worried about pipes getting clogged up] and so is the blanket - will de-fluff later - sunday roast is calling me!!! i've now put machine on extra rinsing cycle and blanket needs drying - i don't have tumble dryer so radiator will have to do.
