Stitch and bitch thread #8. It’s all starting to unravel

Welcome back and welcome for the first time to any newbies. As we go back into autumn/winter mode, sewing days are more and more appealing as the wind gales outside. I enjoyed looking back over the last thread, there were so many beautiful patterns (so little time), such beautiful makes, that thread is an absolute goldmine for inspiration. Also such wisdom from you lovely lot! Thank you. I couldn't do it without you actually as no one around me sews and you have imparted such great advice, hints and tips.

hello! thanks for tagging me. Tried sewing with stretch fabric for the first time today - made some. crossover headbands out of old t shirts. They worked! I've also started some proper sewing lessons - no projects yet but I did learn a lot about Threads, needles, bobbins and have a useful sheet of suppliers!

Thank you for the new thread Nutella. I have been making bags for charity , but started sewing the wrap dress toile for my daughter yesterday. Just in case it turns out perfect 🤞, I am doing it all as well as I can , not rushing . Stopped today having finished the top , but have the facing to press down and undersew yet. Faffy , but worth it for it not to flip out

That's exciting @rivercobbler, I hear some people strongly prefer either stretch or woven fabrics and I'm trying to be ok with both. So far, I'm more confident with woven but only because I hate sewing neckbands with a passion. Aside from that I have found stretch to be ok. Amazing that you're getting a good foundation with classes, I bet I've picked up lots of bad habits from more or less making it up as I go

@bookbook that is a really beautiful fabric. I'm not usually one for busy patterns but that is just lovely and the colours are beautiful. Good luck with your toile and fingers crossed it will be wearable. Is it stretch? Where's it from?

Thanks for the tag & new thread.

I haven’t managed a lot of sewing but am slowly working my way through my quilt as you go project. It’s all very made up so I’m just building the pieces & have no idea yet how I’ll set them out so not 100% sure how many of each different pattern I’ll need ☺️ I do kinda like making it up as I go!
I have to set myself a deadline to start the top I’d planned, I actually bought one on Vinted that’s quite similar so I think that’s lessened the urgency a bit. Bad sewing move.

Meanwhile for present ideas (not mentioning the word!) I thought I’d get some really nice fans & make little holders - seeing as there’s apparently more hot summers ahead. Haven’t decided if I do a drawstring pouch or an envelope type thing with a button.

well done @rivercobbler Ive sewn with stretch just a couple of times & was surprised I was ok with it. @bookbook that looks lovely, I do like the style of a wrap dress/top but always hate feeling like I need to constantly pull them closed. That looks like it’ll sit really well

Thanks for the tag @NutellaEllaElla . I've been really busy recently so haven't had much time to Mumsnet but I have done quite a bit of sewing. I'll see if I have some photos later. I've been doing some quilting for DD as she's gone off to college and I'm currently making a couple of skirts. One of the skirts wasn't planned - I made a dress with tiers and the pattern said to cut 2 pairs of each tier. So having done that, I then found out that it only needed 1 pair! So I now have a shed load of gathering to do all over again. Luckily I had enough left to make a skirt yoke.

Thanks for the tag. My sewing machine has been neglected apart from a sewing day I booked into 2 weeks ago. Started lots of things but finished nothing!
Childminding for 10 days in October; too far to drive so taking my knitting and crocheting because it's light enough to carry!

Thanks for the tag - I've been on holiday so no sewing to report.

Today I squeezed out 2 pairs of Made by Rae joggers from 3m of sweatshirt (the magic of being a shortarse) so now I have those to sew up before the weather turns.

Is there room for one more? Loving reading about what you’re all up to. I have 2 closet core Kalle shirts on the go at the moment. One waiting for buttons the other cut out and overlocked, waiting to be stitched together.

I’m off to our holiday home on Saturday for two weeks so the sewing machine is going in the car. I hope to get the second Kalle put together and a whole bunch of Christmas stuff sorted. Along with various knitting and cross stitch projects!

@Greaterthanthesumoftheparts and @FriendsDrinkBook welcome to the thread!

I have been really impressed with the cup size options for the Itch to Stitch Sorrento top, so I'm planning on doing their Bonn dress next.

Dropping a pin on the new thread 📍. Nothing sewing related to report here either. Still searching for some fabric for my next shirt and, in the meantime, some of my other hobbies have been getting a bit more attention.

I did manage to organise a bit of a sewing list for autumn - Sewaholic Granville shirt, Grainline Reed skirt and M&M Quinn trousers are the minimum I’m aiming for. Fortunately I already have fabric for two of those, which should minimise the risk of procrastination 😅

Welcome to the new joiners!

I'd always love to see some pictures of your makes.
Welcome welcome @Greaterthanthesumoftheparts, so lovely to be able to take your machine on holiday with you! I did bite the bullet with button holes yesterday and it wasn't half as bad as i'd feared. Don't know why I put it off for so long.

Welcome as well @FriendsDrinkBook , do you have any projects at the moment or a project list?

@123ZYX I can't find that top when I google and search the Itch to Stitch website, weird.

Ok, sewing list time. I want to finish my shirt dress. I have a lovely check fabric for a Ellie and Mac Crossover Dress, I do love a winter dress. I was thinking about the Talvikki sweater however a few things are putting me off, 1. pattern review has a few people putting in an invisible zip at the neckline as it is tight, and 2. It doesn't have any kind of lining and sometimes warm fabrics aren't the softest unless they are jersey but I tend towards smarter fabrics for jumpers.

Ah I did see that one and thought it looked really nice. That dress looks lovely too, kinda wish I'd chosen that instead of my shirt dress, I'm drowning in cuffs and collars!

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I'll have to check out itch to stitch , I've not seen any of their patterns.

I'm currently making a wbm bralette and also just bought some lovely pre quilted fabric to make my winter jacket from. I'm making view A of the Hovea jacket.

Hopefully this thread will fill up with photos of makes soon.

Reporting in (have name-changed). I am trying to finish up some summer projects before starting on some winter clothes. But I think I'm going to need some new trousers - thinking of these in a nice wool flannel

https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/210543351376051026/

I made them in a lovely navy blue linen for summer & every time I wear them, I get compliments. As with most Vogue trouser patterns though, I find the trousers are far too wide, so I end up taking in about 2 inches on the inside leg - they're still very full, but not flapping!

Am trying to resist buying one of these beautiful wools from Fabworks - I used their sample service (excellent - fast, big enough samples to get a sense of the handle of the fabric)) and am so so tempted.

I live in jeans but should totally make myself some proper trousers, they look so stylish @FarEast, do they look quite smart?

OP posts:
Report
FarEast · 25/09/2023 14:56

Yes they do. In the linen, I really need to press the pleat - you can see on the Vogue pattern photo that the centre front is pressed very clearly - it's the same down the centre back. But the pattern is actually quite easy - very clear instructions for doing the fly zip, and the pockets are great. The whole thing is really well-drafted, and I could do a standard size 12, with just the adjustment on the inner leg seam. The fall on the sides feels & looks great - although you have to get the absolute true grain to get that nice look - careful careful cutting, ime.

Hi all,

@FarEast i love those trousers. I only recently made my first trousers which were the Closet Core Pietra Pants in Blue Linen. They are super easy (although I got the pockets wonky) and amazingly comfortable.

we’re heading off to our summerhouse tomorrow and I managed to squeeze the sewing machine and a bunch of WIPs into the car. I have a week with my mum and DS and then DH joins us next weekend for another week (we’re even squeezing in a night for two in Copenhagen 🥰) so I should have lots of evening time to get stuff done. Will hopefully be able to share lots of photos of finished projects.
