The other thread is so painfully slow so lets hope a shiny new one will run a smoothly as a well behaved sewing machine. Pin your places here my lovely stitchers Smile

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I’m definitely looking for a sleeveless dress though, I am expecting to be very hot!

Good to hear sewing with linen is a good option.

I’m starting another 6 week course soon so will be making this project with support. Maybe then I will be ready to have a go by myself!

pastabest · 13/03/2023 22:06

@Ulysses I've cut out my sirocco tonight after measuring the pattern against myself - I've taken a good 2inches off the leg already before cuttingn out and I'm still not sure that's enough.

I looked at lots of versions on Insta and noticed on lots of them that there is fabric pooling at the ankle so its definitely a common issue., It's one of the the few things I'd rather be slightly too short rather than far too long!

MissMarplesNiece · 14/03/2023 14:08

Has anyone on this thread got any tips or ideas for matching quilting fabrics when buying by mail order?

My favourite quilting fabric store hasn't reopened for in store shopping since it closed for Covid. I used to enjoy going to the shop and matching up fabrics - and getting inspiration for projects. Now it's mail order only and I'm finding it hard to imagine how fabrics will look when they're all incorporated into a quilt.

pastabest · 15/03/2023 08:39

I'm not a quilter sorry @MissMarplesNiece but could you perhaps copy the pictures of the fabric from the website into a picture editing programme and put them together electronically?

Or the good old fashioned way of ordering samples? Grin

I finished my sirocco last night and it fits like a dream. The legs were still a bit too long even after shortening the pattern pieces by 2 inches but I had always intended to wear it rolled up at the bottom so it's fine.

CrimsonAlligator · 16/03/2023 15:03

I’m not a quilter either @MissMarplesNiece, but regularly use the ProCreate App to work out how things look together, in the same way pastabest described above.

That app only works on Apple products and it’s not free either, but there may be something similar available for free and/or different platforms. Having said that, I’ve used the app for SO many different things it was definitely worth the £10 I paid for it. I even used it to convince my DH that painting our front door pink was going to look fantastic 😄

Your Siricco sounds great @pastabest It’s one of many patterns I have my eye on, if I ever make it to the end of my Granville shirt. I seem to have completely lost interest in it…ugh. Too many steps!

Jins · 24/03/2023 11:51

@Chewbecca have you chosen a pattern yet? I picked up Love Sewing yesterday and it had a pattern that might bring my sewjo back but may work for you.

DH is having his op today so I’m hoping to find a bit of time for sewing while he’s recuperating. It’s been too busy and chaotic recently

I find it very hit and miss. I do have a colour wheel but I can still get it wrong!
I have a "stock" (read hoard) of fabric so I can usually find something to replace a total "horror" match!
I will chose 2 or 3 fabrics from the same designer and then work from there.

Karatema · 24/03/2023 14:08

I completed a bag last week. I'm very pleased with it 😀

I have pretty much decided on the Sew House Sauvie dress. I'm starting a new class soon and wanted to check with the class leader that she felt I could do it before buying!
Thanks for thinking of me though, the striped, sleeveless version of your dress is also very much the style I was thinking of too. Cool, swishy, cottony. Are you going to make it?

Jins · 24/03/2023 14:52

I think I will make it. I’ve got so many other things I ought to do first but I’m tempted by this.
I’ve got to find something for a surprise birthday in May and a formal wedding in August. I’m convinced there’ll be something in my pattern stash

NutellaEllaElla · 24/03/2023 17:32

Hiya, very well done on your bag Karatema! A bag is on my long list of things i'd love to make.

I've been having trouble with my sewing mojo. I had a seamstress help me with some difficult bits so I just have to have the confidence to pick it up again. Hopefully tomorrow.

On hiatus here as I'm away for the weekend but I have cut out the Closet Core Mitchell trousers pattern pieces and now need to make adjustments as I'm tall with long legs. Bought some lovely viscose twill for them but am a bit concerned that it's too thin; was hoping for something slightly thicker, more like Chino fabric, so I might save the twill for something else.

Mumtothreeandadog · 29/03/2023 21:40

Where would a complete beginner start? I don't have a sewing machine which obviously realise is the starting point but I am worried about buying one and not getting the hang of it. Can you hire machines?

Chewbecca · 29/03/2023 21:44

Can you find a course in your area at all? I found it invaluable and you didn’t need to own a machine to do the course.

dubyalass · 02/04/2023 22:58

Three projects cut out and ready to sew: another pair of Megan Nielsen Ash jeans, and (hopefully) wearable toiles of the Closet Core Mitchell trousers and Kalle shirt. Next up is a toile of the Sew Love Patterns Springe jumpsuit and Sienna shift dress by Sew This Pattern. Also bought some linen for another Assembly Line Box Pleat Dress because I absolutely love the one I made as a test run. Although I suspect the linen has shrunk when washed so it'll be interesting to see if I have enough for the dress.

kittykarate · 03/04/2023 10:27

I have a one third finished jersey cardigan, and about 4 projects on my to-do list. I'm hoping my husband goes out cycling for a day over easter so I can crack on with at least finishing the cardigan.

Next up on my sewing club box is the new TatB shirred dress - so that'll be fun to try, but that won't be until later in the month.

Hobbycraft do some 'get to know your sewing machine workshops'

pastabest · 03/04/2023 21:44

I've not done much sewing recently - I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with both fabric and ideas and the result is total inertia.

Total brain dump here to get it out of my head.. feel free not to read 🤣

I'm trying to stop myself from making a zillion siroccos (anyone who has seen my Insta knows when I like a pattern I make lots of them!)

I stuck between needing a proper challenge like another coat or jacket. I have many to choose from.

I've got some lovely mustard yellow suiting fabric that was originally bought to be wilmslow / Tania culottes but now might get made into a sirocco. I also have some dashwood jersey that may also become a sirocco. I've laid it out a few times to cut and then chickened out.

can I even pull off a bright yellow jumpsuit?

I'm still obsessing over the Arthur trousers and want to make them in a very specific shade of 'caper' green that I can't find the right fabric for.

I have some lovely silky blue ramie I feel I should do something special/ vogue with but the practical part of me just wants to turn them into a mother Zadie which will get worn billions of times.

sitting on the table in front of me is the uncut Forget Me Not Adeline blouse pattern. I could cut it out but it's lots of pleats and with the children at home for the next 14 days I can see it going wonky and getting disheartened with it. I have some black linen for it, but also some dark green atelier brunette cotton gauze with sparkly bits in it.

I'm in desperate need of a couple of pairs of wide leg dark trousers. Perhaps a few pinafore dresses and I still need those culottes.

there's a 40% Minerva sale on dead stock which I'm trying to ignore but have about 5 things in my basket.

Or I could just eat a donut and got to bed because decisions are too hard.

I started through my local authority run 'adult education' sewing classes.

did 2 blocks of 1 night a week for 8 weeks back in about 2015 - they lent sewing machines out but only had a few, most people brought their own.

Did another 4 weeks of half day classes with a private org in about 2018 but had done a bit of self learning in between.

then pretty much got on with it myself after that using YouTube etc.

recently joined sewing insta and that's when the bug really really bit.

A brother LS14 is a good cheap machine to start with.

I've seen that ALL OVER social media but I'm large chested with hardly any waist so it's only going to look very frumpy on me.

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2023 21:55

I somehow fell off this thread. However the sewing hasn't stopped. I promised DD 5 dresses following a pattern in the Ahead of The Curve book. So far I have made a toile, fitted it to DD then made 2 proper dresses. I am now on the 3rd.

My new toy - an overlocker, arrived yesterday so I used it to finish the edges of the cut out fabric pieces before I start sewing them together. Much, much quicker than using an overcast stich on the normal sewing machine. It also looks a less violent process! I was worried my sewing machine was going to blow a gasket at some point.

pastabest · 03/04/2023 22:03

What overlocker did you get @GnomeDePlume?

I'm eying my Aldi Necchi wondering if I upgraded to something else if it would get used more - it's very noisy and I think possibly a bit rudimentary. I don't get a good finish from it but love the speed.

I may even go on one of those 'get to know your overlocker' courses but I'm a bit embarrassed to take my Aldi machine...

GnomeDePlume · 03/04/2023 22:19

@pastabest I went for a Brother M343D. Pretty much all the reviews were positive. The threading is truly terrifying initially but I found a good youtube video which helped enormously.

I didn't realise Aldi did one or I would have looked there.

kittykarate · 04/04/2023 10:14

@pastabest I'm definitely going to be embracing my frump, the bottom of my boobs are definitely too close to my waistband.

I feel like the dress will be less frump then the blouse but I'm not sure, peplums always look a bit odd on me.

My mam has a Singer serger - it came unthreaded and she couldn't get it right and shoved it back in the bag in disgust. It took me about 2 hours with tweezers, cursing and tears to get it working when I was housesitting. She was pleased when she came back from holiday though to a working serger, but is refusing to change any looper thread colours.

GnomeDePlume · 04/04/2023 14:35

@kittykarate would your mum be prepared to try the factory trick of tying new thread to old and pulling it through?
