denise interchangeable needles

jeangenie · 22/01/2008 13:01

ok, my birthday is coming up an dI am thinking of hinting (heavily) to DH that he should get me these (ie th eleading him to the pc, selecting needles and adding them to a cart, putting in his switch number and pressing BUY kind of hinting). I never seem to have the right sized needles for a project and am too far from yarn shops to get easily so I thought these could be useful

does anyone on here use them? what do you think of them?
I quite like knitting with wooden needles but think these would be so handy (and great for travelling too)

persaude me! (or dissuade me if you hate 'em!)

anyone use these?

grannyslippers · 22/01/2008 20:59

yes I have a set

They are very handy indeed. But they are quite lightweight and plasticky (although I can't fault the smoothness) The join is reasonably secure although I have had it fall apart now and again. The smallest size is 3.75mm (no.9).

Also you can connect cords together to make a huge long circular, or multiple circulars of the same size. And they are useful if you have various projects on the go using the same size needles.

I find them useful but wouldn't choose to knit with them if I have a better quality circular in the size.

PurlyQueen · 22/01/2008 21:02

I only use them when I don't have a free set of Addi Turbos or bamboo circulars.
They're OK but a bit plasticky for me. i taken them on holiday because they won't be detected by airport X-ray machines.

marina · 22/01/2008 21:03

Jean, they are fabulous
Superlight and I love the rather cute leaflet they send with them - these are people with a real dedication to their product
Pink ones benefit Breast Cancer Research
And yes, these don't show up on x-rays at airport security
The plastickyness of them is actually less obvious (after some time of using light bamboo) than the metallic clickiness of steel

marina · 22/01/2008 21:03

Bundy loves hers too btw

jeangenie · 22/01/2008 21:51

thanks guys

Marina I think you have sold them to me, I will be doing my fair share of commuter knitting with them as I imagine you do so the lightness and circularness will be good

yes, am going to get the pink (my mum died of BC )

no no no no no no no

this is what you must buy => if you like wood

or

if you like metal

you can buy just one to try them out if you are not sure but honestly, they are very very good.

I don't love the look of the wooden ones but they DO look miles better than the denises and they are about 400x better to knit with.

Even the wooden ones have a very, vey smooth join. I actually prefer them to Addis, thats how good they are.

Oh and they are very light. They are a joy to knit with, tbh.

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 09:15

In fact I am knitting with mine RIGHT NOW

jeangenie · 24/01/2008 16:49

oh, those wooden ones look far too crazy for my bus route! I quite like the look of the pink denise...but am dithering again now. Let's face it - I will never be the kind of knitter who expects perfection in a needle (given that I can't provide it in my knitting) so maybe "good enough" is good enough...

thanks though - just wish there was someone real I could go and try them all out!

OP posts:
FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 17:47

ok, up to you

I warn you though, denises are a very different experience to Knitpicks.

I suppose it depends on whether you like knitting with plastic or wood or metal. I prefer wood, then metal.

I'd say denises are ok in a pinch, but thats about it.

Tamum · 24/01/2008 17:51

I quite like my Denises, and Pruni uses hers loads. I simply couldn't bear the colours of the Harmony one- they alright to look at on their own, but would clash horribly with most yarn. I just got some bamboo interchangeables which I am drooling over but haven't actually used yet. They are only available from the US though. I really got them because I do often find the Denise cord rather cumbersome.

Tamum · 24/01/2008 17:51

Oh, and Bundle has the pink Denises too

Hello filly

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 20:03

harmonies LOOK vile, absolutely

This is one thing that I cannot agree with Ravellers on. I mean, why would you want varigated NEEDLES?

Actually though, in person they are quite dark and they don't clash with anything. They are just fabulously made. I don't look at my knitting really when I am doing it, unless I am doing lace/cabling

They feel like lantern moon or colonial circulars, only quite a lot cheaper...

the metal ones are better than addis, IMO, and the cable is just superb-flexble and non-kinky...

(ps hi tamum )

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 20:04

oh god though tamum, you haven't got plymouths have you?

florenceuk · 24/01/2008 21:05

aah Filly you also got the Harmonys! I think they are lovely to use. You can't do the connecting thing, and you can't do small circumference knitting (which is why I'm going to attempt to learn magic loop - gulp) but they are super smooth and the cable is fantastic. Mine haven't come undone either (cross fingers)

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 21:09

ah but I don't think they are any shorter than denises, are they? Are they? .

I LOATHE the cord on the Denises in particular. It is really, really not flexible. This alone limits how short you can make something.

They are just...nice.

The Denises have the look and feel of medical appliances, somehow.

The harmonies are FINE so long as you don't look directly at them.

Um...Florence...why not use dpns?

jeangenie · 24/01/2008 21:20

oh you guys are confusing me with all this high falutin' talk of harmonies and plymouths...can't you talk in laywoman's terms?
I just did a hat with some bog standard circulars and the cord kept kinking and drove me insane, so maybe denises are not the way forward for me afterwards
I just don't think I could bear those nasty hippy (no offence to any hippies, but you know what I mean) looking things...they make me think me of tyedyed flares [shudder]

OP posts:
FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 21:31

yes yes they look horrible

I didn't like them for ages. Then I actually was in the shop that sells them in the UK (getknitted) and saw them in person, and actually they are much, much less offensive

in particualr, they are darker.

I LOATHE and DETEST variagated yarns. They make me think of patchouli (sp?). But these are fine. Actually, because they are quite dark, unless you have good light AND are looking directly at them, they look like ebony.

God I know how you felt, I felt the same, I wasn't going to ever buy them, but then I needed 3mm circulars and was in getknitted...and one thing led to another...

jeangenie · 24/01/2008 21:36

I just really want a set of something - I am SICK of not having the right needles to hand

know what you mean about variegated yarn too

OP posts:
FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 21:40

ah this is so hard

i have stood where you are standing

i am now standing where i am standing

the view here is better, containing as it does, needles that look and feel like ebony with a supple, non-kinky cord

what to say, what to say...

jeangenie · 24/01/2008 21:48

marina, bundle - where are you? she has me all but convinced...

OP posts:
Tamum · 24/01/2008 22:21

I might have Filly, who wants to know?

I have these little beauties. Clara Parkes described the case as fitting into your hand like a PDA and I was beyond resistance. I will knit with them tomorrow and report back.

florenceuk · 24/01/2008 22:36

actually I've got both sets - if you wanted to have a look and were dropping past SW london then you could compare. Do you ever go to S&B? I haven't been for ages but we could do a special mini-meet up?

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 22:41

(to tamum)

(I did buy off ebay...it is POSSIBLE I got a duff set...oh and the case IS very small, it is true)
