denise interchangeable needles

jeangenie · 22/01/2008 13:01

ok, my birthday is coming up an dI am thinking of hinting (heavily) to DH that he should get me these (ie th eleading him to the pc, selecting needles and adding them to a cart, putting in his switch number and pressing BUY kind of hinting). I never seem to have the right sized needles for a project and am too far from yarn shops to get easily so I thought these could be useful

does anyone on here use them? what do you think of them?
I quite like knitting with wooden needles but think these would be so handy (and great for travelling too)

persaude me! (or dissuade me if you hate 'em!)

fillyjonk, i've been stung by bamboo needles so many times - literally. they seem to splinter in my hands.

are the harmonies like that at all?

can you get through airport security with harmonies?

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 22:42

(I have both too

and plymouths

so if you are ever in south wales and need convincing that nhs style knitting needles are WRONG then...say)

FillyjonkisCALM · 24/01/2008 22:43

no they are not warthog

they are very very polished

no splinters

think ebony

florenceuk - that is very kind - I'd love an excuse to go to s&b and check out your needles - when is it on?

filly - that's very kind of you too - you are not putting me off with the NHS references you know - I have a strange predilection for surgical style things (I was once a conceptual artist - I think that probably explains all that needs to be explained!)

I think the next meet up is Wed next week near St James Park - I'll see what I can negotiate here if you want to go. Otherwise we could try IKnit?

I must say in warning that one of my needles had a snag, although Get Knitted replaced it very quickly - i think it was a crack actually. The advantage is that if a tip does split, you can replace it (unlike normal circulars).

So what was the matter with them filly? They've had generally good reviews on Ravelry, and Clara loved them. The joins are beautifully smooth, I've got that far. Frankly even if they splinter I would still prefer them to those Harmony colours

jeangenie · 24/01/2008 23:00

oohh, have wanted to go to iknit for ages...can we go there? they hold one in the shop don't they?

OP posts:
warthog · 25/01/2008 09:15

i went to iknit about 6 months ago on a tuesday, during their opening times.

it was closed. in fact it looked like it wasn't there anymore.

anyone been there recently?

florenceuk · 25/01/2008 09:52

i have only been the once ages ago. But their message board is very active so I presume they are still there.

Just looked on their site and there doesn't appear to be anything up for next week - but it will be a Wed or Thursday night, shall we see which one is at the shop? Anyone else want to join us? I will bring an Addi bamboo circular to compare as well.

jeangenie · 25/01/2008 12:00

someone I "met" through ravelry goes - I will ask her. Otherwise S&B next wednesday would be fine - shall we just do that?

OP posts:
florenceuk · 25/01/2008 12:17

Ok, let's make it Wed night regardless, if it is at the Iknit shop we'll do it there otherwise we'll go to S&B. Warthog are you london-based?

jeangenie · 25/01/2008 13:08

great - will skip pilates!

my email is overmilkwood at gmail dot com - let's swap details so we can contact each other closer to the time

thanks again

(tamum-honestly, try them, I think I am being negative.

The only thing is-do you remember the conversation we had about a year ago re denises when I said "WHY doesn't anyone do bamboo interchangables" and you said it would be hard to get a decent join?

BUT I may have a duff pair. I do hope so.

The specific problem is that the screw comes undone as I am knitting

Tamum · 25/01/2008 17:00

Yes, I do remember that I tried them and they were fab and seemed very smooth and stable, but I should probably try all the sizes before leaping to conclusions!

FillyjonkisCALM · 25/01/2008 17:07

am really pleased yours worked

also mine were secondhand

there might even be a way to tighten them

or it might of course be that that was why they were being sold

Also, thinking on it, I do actually seem to be able to make any bamboo needles loosen, even fixed ones...

warthog · 25/01/2008 17:08

florenceuk, yes i am london-based. will check with ball and chain dh whether i'm allowed out on weds...

Tamum · 25/01/2008 17:09

That's quite a talent you've got there They have quite a long thread to screw in, and they seem very tight but maybe they'll work loose with time. I shall use them intensively and report back.

FillyjonkisCALM · 25/01/2008 17:14

it does take about 5 or 6 rows before they start working loose (this is the interchangables)

and it is not loose enough for the stitches to fall off, it is just loose enough to catch and sometimes snag. Which is REALLY ANNOYING

now the kids are happily fighting, I must away and work upon my dna baby cardigan (I am overwhelemed at the fabulousness of baby clothes with dna cabling on them, I mean, HOW cool is THAT?

(I am also going to try bunging a dna cable on eris I think-if anyone has any thoughts? Its the same width, I think)

warthog · 25/01/2008 17:16

i'm envious of all your enthusiasm. sigh. i think i knitted myself out trying to make the christmas deadline. i haven't been able to face my knitting bag since

One of the joins for my Denise set snapped last year. I sent it back to the Denise manufacturers in the US and had a new set of connectors two days later. Now that's what i call service.

I took a pair of bamboo circulars on a flight to Barbados last year with no problems.

Tamum · 25/01/2008 18:08

Oh alright then, I'll try 5 or 6 rows

I have done loads of those DNA things as presents for people, but have never managed an entire garment, just bits to frame. Mb did a whole scarf though, and I am thinking of incorporating some bobbles on one for dh who works on methylated DNA

Fubsy · 25/01/2008 20:54

i like the DNA cable! I noticed on Ravelry someone's done a pattern for an e coli. And I think theres a womb on Knitty?

I like that kind of thinking!

I wish I hadnt looked at this thread though.

Now Ive found another thing I really really need
