denise interchangeable needles

jeangenie · 22/01/2008 13:01

ok, my birthday is coming up an dI am thinking of hinting (heavily) to DH that he should get me these (ie th eleading him to the pc, selecting needles and adding them to a cart, putting in his switch number and pressing BUY kind of hinting). I never seem to have the right sized needles for a project and am too far from yarn shops to get easily so I thought these could be useful

does anyone on here use them? what do you think of them?
I quite like knitting with wooden needles but think these would be so handy (and great for travelling too)

persaude me! (or dissuade me if you hate 'em!)

Ok Warthog, come along and see if you can get some enthusiasm back! Filly if you are ever in london I'd love to meet up (my trips to south wales are pretty rare) or maybe we should plan a Mumsnet trip to get knitted one day????

FillyjonkisCALM · 26/01/2008 11:29

its a PITA actually, I am normally in London about once a month, because I am from there origninally and I take the dcs home to see the grandparents.

But

I am expecting baby #3 in about a week and so my London jaunts are limited . And I tend to leave dp here to earn the money, so I can't bugger off at night, sadly...

Must find a way to do it though. I've never actually knitted with anyone, except my mum...

jeangenie · 26/01/2008 19:20

oh come ON FJ - stop making excuses. We've all given birth - I'm sure we could manage to delivere a baby in the midst of a bit of knitting if necessary (depending on where we were in the pattern repeats of course!)

well, maybe if we don't terrrify each other too much (with our hairy arms and whatnot) we'll do it again and you can come, sporting cute and cuddley baby as well as your interchangeables...

I joined the iknit newsletter and today's says they are having a session at the shop on Thursday. I might be able to make that if you can FlorenceUk - otherwise Weds at the S+B is fine for me

is anyone else coming along?

OP posts:
PurlyQueen · 28/01/2008 16:18

If you're having a London meet-up, can I come?

jeangenie · 28/01/2008 16:23

yes please!

it'll be next Weds or Thurs at either Stitch'n'bitch or iknit

Evenings are a bit frenzied for me these days but I will be with you in spirit, brandishing my lovely Denises
I am not a bit surprised they were so quick off the mark Purly.
I am not normally an advocate of plastic if alternatives exist but I just know I'd be unscrewing those cute little bamboo thingies (I splinter bamboo too warty) and intimidated by the sheer loudness of the Harmonies

bundle · 28/01/2008 16:47

hmmm never knew needle materials could incite so much passion!

after using denises for a bit, I spose my main finding is that i've put too short a cord on which makes it a bit irritating. but the smoothness of the actual needles and the lightness is indeed v desirable. i'm gliding along much better than even with bamboo

FillyjonkisCALM · 28/01/2008 19:39

LOUDNESS of harmonies?

Really? how is it you're knitting there, marina?

Oh do you mean visual loudness?

marina · 29/01/2008 09:24

Visual loudness Filly
And bundle, pruners, jeanjenie and tamum can confirm that I am not scared of vivid colours in RL as a rule
But I am a sort of noisy, sweary knitter at times usually when cable needles are involved
Nice to see you posting again

FillyjonkisCALM · 29/01/2008 10:01

yes I can always be sucked in by a nice interchangable needle thread

bundle · 29/01/2008 10:07

oooh marina some of your stripey combos for the blankies have sent me into colour raptures...am still log cabinning - on the 3rd of 4 big chunks for The Blanket (colours: a limey green, a muted darker green, turquoise, pink and dark brown squares)

marina · 29/01/2008 10:08

I have a Mission Falls blanket in waiting in my stash box bundy, in similar gorgeous muted colours
That's after my commission for tiny purple hotpants for the Niecelet of course

florenceuk · 29/01/2008 10:25

these all sound lovely. I am looking foward to some photos (hint hint) as I am a bit afraid of colour and need a bit of encouragement.

The harmonies are not that bad, really marina! Jeangenie can report back as to whether they break the taste barrier.

marina · 29/01/2008 10:27

I promise I will photograph current blanky and also the ace puce Rowan wool/cotton that was available in industrial quantities in the John Lewis sale for some odd reason
I have the opposite problem - I have no confidence with neutral wool
My previous commission was an ecru matinee jacket for Niecelet and I cannot get out of my head that it looks like string, even though it was £££ cashmere

florenceuk · 29/01/2008 11:33

eew to ecru - purple/green/teal/red/lime etc all much better colours for babies!

bundle · 29/01/2008 11:34

teal/lime getting me all trembly

marina · 29/01/2008 11:42

By request Florence, they won't make that mistake again

florenceuk · 30/01/2008 20:42

this is wot babies like: teal and lime

marina · 30/01/2008 20:43

Ds has a fab Guernsey hoodie that shade of teal Florence

jeangenie · 01/02/2008 10:20

SO, the results of the great interchangeables competition....

by a long chalk.....

I am pleased to announce.....

the Harmonys have it (you were right FJ!)

they are lovely and not garish (but NOT so dark they look like ebony - that's going a bit too far) - a bit more like pretty, faded, boiled sweets. Not Hippyish. I REALLY liked them. They come in a horrible pouch though - why can't they make something pretty to hold them?

The only advantage I could see to the denises is the fact that they have two extra larger needle sizes...

So, a huge THANK YOU to you all for your help and advice, and an even bigger THANK YOU to FlorenceUk for so kindly bring along both her sets for me to try

now I just have to get DH to buy them!

(did spot this Nolita bag at iknit last night too - very lustworthy indeed, is it a contender for birthday present over the harmonys - hmm, not sure - maybe wait until Xmas for this)

Excellent! I'm sure Filly will be pleased to find another convert!

BTW Iknit was a very pleasant shop although the owner was, shall we say, uncommunicative (somehow I expected that if a shop were hosting a knitting group they would actually talk to the people who came???) Their selection has improved vastly since I went there last - they have Habu at £7 per tiny bundle, some manos, lots of sock yarn, and some very pretty Artesano alpaca. Knitting projects included lots of scarves, a few socks and a few cardies being knit - acrylic content fairly low

jeangenie · 01/02/2008 20:49

yes, wasn't he strange? and I just realised this morning he overcharged me by £1.50 for that skein of manos I bought, and it was already £1 dearer than getknitted sell it for.

Harumph!

I feel an irritated email coming on, if I can muster the will...

rantinghousewife · 01/02/2008 20:52

Bit of a hijack but, I love Artesano Alpaca, knitted my first bag with that stuff.

jeangenie · 05/02/2008 08:32

will look out for it RH - bet they have it at iKnit
