That video looks really helpful - thanks! I'm pretty sure it is the 1981 model. Rookue question, but based on that timeline, does it mean mine is single drive or double drive? And if single, does it have Scotch tension?

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 11/04/2022 15:50

It has a tension knob so it must be scotch tension I think, and I’m pretty sure it’s single drive. There’s a rav project of a refurbishment of one and it has some better photos www.ravelry.com/projects/BlackMary/give-the-ashford-traditional-2nd-live

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 11/04/2022 15:51

@CrochetBug lol, I’m hungry and they still don’t look like prawns to me Wink

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2022 15:58

Brilliant thank you @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound - I have got lots to pore over now! That one on Rav looks like the one just before mine again. The maidens are pointier.

One thing I'm really glad about is that at the end of my first spinning course I was given a printout of absolutely all the information I'd learned about wheels as well as how to spin. I'll be reading that all through again.

buckingmad · 11/04/2022 15:59

Ooh only just found this part of mumsnet! I am a knitter.

Here’s a cute little set I have sent off to my new tiny nephew.

I’ve got an idea for a cardigan I’m going to knit for my little girl and want to try some embroidery on it so will post my progress for constructive criticism!

I jyst thought - I guess I'll be needing a lazy Kate too. And a niddy noddy. I live the names Grin

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2022 16:15

Welcome @buckingmad! That is absolutely beautiful! Don't worry the thread is usually mostly about knitting and crochet, rather than me banging on about spinning wheels Blush

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 11/04/2022 16:21

Oh wow @buckingmad, she is absolutely adorable! And that little set is such beautiful work! Welcome to the thread Smile

You’ll need both @Fairislefandango but I made mine using spare bits of wood and dowling. I did upgrade the niddy noddy to something more decorative and less likely to poke an eye out but I still use the lazy Kate I made. It even has a tensioning system and they’re pricey to buy.

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2022 16:57

Wow - you are a very talented person! Did you follow a set of instructions to make the tensioned lazy Kate, or did you work it out yourself? I guess I could maybe find a secondhand one.

Hmmm, although... I have an extremely talented ex-engineer FIL who gets very bored being retired, to the point that he learned how to make beautiful guitars from scratch Shock A lazy Kate would probably not be difficult for him. He loves a useful project!

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 11/04/2022 17:54

Oh wow, if he can make guitars a lazy Kate will be no bother Shock

I followed this tutorial www.instructables.com/Tensioned-Lazy-Kate-with-Yarn-Guides/ it was easy, I just found dowels that fitted inside my bobbin and drilled holes until I could fit them into the holes.

Mine is not pretty but it’s functional!

Fairislefandango · 11/04/2022 17:58

Brilliant! Knowing FIL, if I showed him a video of how a lazy Kate worked, he'd immediately understand how to make a good one and design his own...

sophs29 · 12/04/2022 07:39

Wow all this spinning wheel talk is making me extremely jealous! I think it's amazing to think you made that yarn yourself @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound

And @buckingmad that little set is gorgeous! Lucky little boy!

@CrochetBug they definitely look like little tulips, not prawns! 😂 oh I do love prawns tho 😍😂

@lucysmam Rex looks great! And I love the name Pancake for your DDs new mantis 😂😂

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2022 08:46

I think it's amazing to think you made that yarn yourself@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound

It certainly is. Judging by what I produced on my spinning courses, it will be a long time before I manage to make anything that looks anywhere near as professional as that!

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2022 08:52

Ooh my dad has sent me a few pics of the wheel, plus a video of my mum treadling it! Don't think I can attach a video, can I? Might see if I can post it on Rav to see if you think it looks like it's moving ok, @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound!

I've put the video on my Instagram.

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 12/04/2022 09:40

@fairislefandango It looks like it’s running really smoothly and it looks nice and clean and well cared for, I think you got a bargain! Grin I’m so excited for you!

Ah ha @sophs29 a new person to convert to spinning Grin have you ever considered trying out a drop spindle? It’s fun! Wink

MerylSqueak · 12/04/2022 10:33

It all starts with a simple drop spindle...

Before you know it - alpaca farm Grin

sophs29 · 12/04/2022 10:43

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound I definitely don't have the room for any new hobbies thank you very much 😂 what with, sewing, crochet, painting, clay, I think I have enough! I don't even get a chance to do those 😭

@Fairislefandango that's so aesthetically pleasing to look at, watch your mum doesn't end up keeping it 😉😂

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 12/04/2022 11:10

@MerylSqueak Grin

@sophs29 lol, fair enough Wink

DS2 is really out of sorts this morning and went back to bed and is still sleeping, he’s got a dreadful cold but he had covid at half term, surely can’t have caught it again this quickly?! I’m going to have to bribe him to do a test when he wakes up I think 😬 Either that or he’s skipped 10 years and became a teenager overnight…

Fairislefandango · 12/04/2022 12:14

@Fairislefandangothat's so aesthetically pleasing to look at, watch your mum doesn't end up keeping it 😉😂

No chance! She doesn't even know one end of a knitting needle from another. The craft enthusiasm very much skipped a generation Grin. My dear departed granny was the knitter, but was a fan of acrylic and would probably have though spinning an odd hobby! My mum would probably be on-board with alpacas though. She absolutely loves goats and has always said she'd like one!

I need to have another go with my drop spindles to keep myself in drafting practice while I wait for my wheel! I didn't really get the hang of the spindle at first, but got used to handling the fibre properly on my spinning courses.

lucysmam · 12/04/2022 18:00

I feel like I'm missing out here 🤣

I've started the stego but realised I had miscounted two rows, last night, so frogged 🤯 Plan is to re-do them tonight I think

sophs29 · 12/04/2022 19:00

Ahhh I see @Fairislefandango I think you're either completely and utterly obsessed with crafting (me) or not at all! There isn't really an in between 😂 well that's how it goes in my family anyway!

Oh @lucysmam how annoying! At least you hadn't got too far into it! When did your friend want the dinos for?

lucysmam · 12/04/2022 19:10

@sophs29 not until Christmas - I started now so I have plenty of time at other stuff too 🤣

sophs29 · 12/04/2022 19:23

I don't blame you @lucysmam I always want to be that organised but it never quite goes to plan!

lucysmam · 12/04/2022 19:25

I can bit-and-bob at them as I please doing it this way, and do the million and one other crafty things whirring round my brain too...Mad Hatter hat being one of them 🤣🎩
