By the sounds of your stash @CrochetBug you'd probably be good to go WinkGrin

CrochetBug · 16/03/2021 08:28

@sophs29 I proper laughed at that Grin
Just because I have a large stash it doesn't mean i don't need a reason to buy more it would all go together. I guess I could do a stash buster sophies universe. But it would probably end up hideous Wink

BookShark · 16/03/2021 09:03

Well that's the thing, it's such an intricate pattern that I think it would be really hard to pick the right colours as there's do much crossover between rows etc. Hence my decision to use the whirl as I thought that would solve the problem!

Thanks for the positive comments though, I'll crack on and see where I get to. But like Kate105, I tend to crochet in front of the TV, so anything too complicated means I end up missing out on what's going on (still haven't fessed up to DH that I have no idea what happened in Bloodlands on Sunday as I was too busy back post crocheting!)

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 16/03/2021 09:06

Oh wow BookShark! That is so intricate Shock it's beautiful!

lucysmam · 16/03/2021 09:15

I keep eyeing up the Sophie's Universe but then get stuck on colours 🙈 @BookShark yours is looking lovely.

I thought about using yarn cakes for it but then saw one in sunset colours that I really like too, and sherbet colours appeal to me too.

Are you working from the book or internet pattern?

BookShark · 16/03/2021 09:20

From the book, it was my Christmas present to myself, along with the yarn. And I have to say, the book is great - for all my complaints about how tricky the pattern is to follow, the book has so many photos to help you, it does make it a lot more manageable.

I don't generally like following patterns from the internet - or at least if I do, I print them out. I like to cross things off and make notes!

CrochetBug · 16/03/2021 09:41

Not only do I have an embarrassing amount of yarn, I also have a large collection of hooks. So why is it that I cannot find a 6mm one anywhere. Confused
DS1 was fiddling with one the other day but can't remember what he did with it. Hmm

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/03/2021 10:35

@BookShark Sophie’s universe is looking lovely. I think I like every variation of colours I’ve seen so I’m not sure there is a bad combination but as it’s so intricate there probably feel like bad colour combinations row on row but when you look at it as a while it evens out.

I tend to crochet in front of the TV, so anything too complicated means I end up missing out on what's going on (still haven't fessed up to DH that I have no idea what happened in Bloodlands on Sunday as I was too busy back post crocheting!)

See, this is when you need MN’s most hated - the gaming DH! DH has worked out that “do you want to play your game?” Is actually code for “go play your game, I want to crochet and not be distracted by you” Grin

This thread is not showing up in my active discussions! So if I close the tab I lose the thread until I can find it again. But I have so many crochet patterns open that I would like to try that I’m struggling to find the thread amongst the many, many tabs I’ve got open. I probably need to do some crochet admin and save the patterns somewhere but I’ve too much crochet to be getting on with.

tizwozliz · 16/03/2021 10:43

That Sophie's Universe pattern looks way too complicated for TV watching, anything that starts getting into front posts and back posts is normally too complex for me.

I once made the mistake of trying to crochet whilst watching the missing. That was a mistake, lots of flash backs indicated by dates on screen, luckily I could google what was going on.

Ha - this is me too!

I didn't manage to start the KAL yesterday after all. I've gone from having no work to suddenly being very busy, with supply teaching, exam invigilation and job applications squeezed between my other teaching!

Finally finished my CAL 💃🏼 hopefully the photos upload okay!
Now I'm going to have a little break, read a book DP got me for Christmas and decide what to crochet next!

Looks great, I love how different they've all turned out

CrochetBug · 16/03/2021 12:37

That looks fab @sophs29. I love the colours.

Im having a go at cable. I sized down on the hook, and my swatch was damn near spot on. Yet this is 1" wider than it should be. Its a hot water bottle cover so may or may not matter. If I had a hot water bottle I could check. Grin

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/03/2021 13:11

Well done sophs that looks great. Your green one has inspired me to do a green blanket for MIL. I was tempted to do a Spice of Life for MIL but not completely settled on which pattern yet.

BookShark · 16/03/2021 13:43

Love the colours sophs29!

What do people do with their finished masterpieces? I only took up crochet a few years ago, and I'm already overrun with blankets. Maybe this is why I need to branch out and try a cardigan or something - or a hot water bottle cover!

sophs29 · 16/03/2021 14:04

Thank you everyone!
@InTheNightWeWillWish I have so much yarn left over that I'm going to do a spice of life one next for my own DS but I need to do a few other non blanket related projects first Grin

sophs29 · 16/03/2021 14:34

@BookShark it's awful when I think about it, I've never actually made something for myself, I've made a couple of jumpers for my baby, and everything else I've crocheted has been for other people, the blanket I attempted to make him (my first ever crochet project) fell apart 😂
Even when I sew (I used to be a sewing machinist and now have a sewing room/nursery soon to be a full nursery) I always sew for others!
Maybe my next project should be something for me!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/03/2021 15:10

sophs it feels like we might be doing an unofficial CAL of green Spice of LifeGrin! I’ve got the yarn for MIL’s blanket arriving later this week but I need to get on with some other bits before MIL’s blanket.

sophs29 · 16/03/2021 16:00

Hahaha yes @InTheNightWeWillWish my other DS starts nursery next month so hopefully that means more time to crochet or do housework Grin

lazylinguist · 16/03/2021 18:10

Lovely blanket @sophs29! The colours are really nice.

@BookShark - there's definitely a limit to the number of blankets one needs! I probably won't make another one for a good while I've made 3 in the last year. I've probably made more things for myself than for anyone else, but I do like making socks for people! They are somehow a bit less worrying in terms of whether people will like them!

lucysmam · 16/03/2021 18:23

Sophs your CAL is pretty 😍 I think I might do one at some point.

BookShark I've only really done amigurumi for dd2, the blanket for her, and cardi for dd1 so not run into the over-run problem yet. I plan to do a Sophie at some point, for myself, and will likely continue the stuffies on request & useful items like jumpers. I like a snuggly jumper :)

tizwozliz · 16/03/2021 20:05

I was hoping to have a nice restful evening sat on the sofa crocheting after having my vaccine earlier today. Too shattered to do anything more than sit on the sofa and eat biscuits though!

lucysmam · 16/03/2021 20:59

This is possibly an odd question but I'm going to ask anyway; do any of you find that different colours of yarn from the same brand feel different to use?

I ask because the blue part of the Poundland yarn I'm using for this blanket squeaks when I use it, even though my tension is about the same for each row Confused & it feels different to the turquoise/green that come afterwards - they feel smoother on my hook.

Told you it was an odd one but there we go Grin

tizwozliz · 16/03/2021 21:03

Yes, definitely. The stylecraft duck egg I have is horrible to work with

lazylinguist · 16/03/2021 21:08

do any of you find that different colours of yarn from the same brand feel different to use?

Definitely! But I think I've only found that with acrylic yarns, not with real wool. Some colours of the Scheepjes yarn I used for my first crochet blanket definitely felt different from others.
