Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Admittedly my next request will be a Goldie from Sandman:

Just the wings to sew on, leaving that for tomorrow as I already made two right wings by mistake and had to unpick. A lot of sewing at the end for this one which I'm not a fan of

I am so impressed by all the sock knitting. I am still on sock one. I have unraveled a near-complete sock twice. It's better each time, but not quite right. Let's hope number 3 is good. The Ann Budd book is good, I am the problem. The last attempt had 3 holes in it that just looked weird, at the beginning and end of the gusset reduction piece. I am determined to get this right. I really want to make my own socks.

DH is laughing (not meanly, though) and says they would be easier to buy, and he is probably right. I am so impressed with the cute socks people have completed here. Luckily I had finished all the Christmas presents already - as this is a serious stall.

@NiceCardigan beautiful socks and packaging.

@tizwozliz that's brilliant!

I'm currently knitting a shawl for my mum, as she said she gets cold arms when she's reading in bed. Just using a free pattern I found online and Stylecraft Special DK in raspberry, I love that colour!

CrochetBug · 14/12/2020 01:43

@tizwozliz I've lots of good things about the clover hooks. However I just can't justify the cost of them, so I'll stick with my cheap rip offs for now. Plus the 3737633972763783 other hooks I own Grin

@Slothkin show us the goodies Grin

Love the sock packaging!

I've half made another pair of socks. I decided to swap colours for the cuff, heels and toes so they co-ordinate but don't match. I also decided to make them at the same time so I have 2 half socks Grin

I was a bit meh about crochet the last few days though so did some cross stitch instead.

@tizwozliz I love that!! Who is it for?

And @CrochetBug that cross stitch is also lovely! I tried cross stitch when I was a bit younger and just didn't have the patience for it, maybe I should try again now and see how I get on!

lazylinguist · 14/12/2020 08:59

spamm - it takes a few goes to totally get the hang of picking up the right stitches to avoid holes at the corner of the gusset! But even if you do get a bit of a hole, I don't think it tends to be that visible on the finished sock, particularly if you're using finer yarn.

tizwozliz - that little guy is gorgeous!

I'm going to either make or print some sock packaging for MIL's socks today!

It's for my nephew. I was originally going to make it with ricorumi but didn't have enough of the colours I've needed so it's been made with DMC Petra 3 and a 2mm hook ( I have a ton of this colour as once ordered one online and they sent me a box of 4 by mistake!). Glad really as it would have been much bigger than anticipated if made with ricorumi

mrstea301 · 14/12/2020 09:13

Any cross stitchers? I just picked up cross stitching during lockdown and I love it so much!! Have also signed up for a beginners knitters class in January, and looking at a crochet one. Have tried both before but just on my own!

sophs29 · 14/12/2020 09:23

Yes that was handy @tizwozliz I love the colour!! your nephew will love it! what pattern did you use? My Little boy would love it!

tizwozliz · 14/12/2020 09:28

It's from a book - Dinosaurs, Mammoths and More Prehistoric Amigurumi - Petra the Pterodactyl. I think you can buy the pattern standalone on etsy (the book is much better value though)

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 14/12/2020 10:10

He looks brilliant tizwozliz! And your socks are so beautifully presented NiceCardigan

I'm going to join spamm on the partial socks bench. I started the Hermione's every day sock pattern a while ago but I'm using WYS sparkly Christmas yarn and I don't think the pattern and yarn agree so I'm going to rip it back to the ribbing and knit plain ones. I definitely won't finish my jumper in time for Christmas but I might have sparkly socks.

Slothkin · 14/12/2020 12:04

@CrochetBug such pretties!

Oh thank you so much @tizwozliz I'll have a look!
And omg @Slothkin how exciting! A lovely gift!
I'm waiting for my wool warehouse order to come, can't wait!

Slothkin · 14/12/2020 12:57

Thanks @sophs29! I was so pleased when I opened it, it does look special! Now I just need to work out how the hell to wrap it without him wandering in to ask if I’d like a cuppa!

Slothkin · 14/12/2020 12:59

I think I’m going to have to fake a Very Important Conference Call 😂

CrochetBug · 14/12/2020 13:09

@Slothkin so pretty!!! What a lucky husband!

lazylinguist · 14/12/2020 15:20

Here’s what I came home to today- brightened my Monday no end! I am taking a stand against all you sock knitters and persisting with my quest to sort out some hand warmers 😂

@Slothkin - that looks amazing, so pretty.

@tizwozliz - that dragon is so cute, I love it. What a wonderful gift.

@Kate105 - I was about to join you with the hand warmers, but I may have figured out socks. This is my attempt number 3 and I think this will be good. I am on the final straight before I need to do the toe. So exciting!

I miss wool shops! Although the shawl I'm knitting for my mum is turning out ok, I wish I'd used a more "special" yarn to knit with, something slightly fluffy maybe, I'm night sure. Without seeing it and feeling it I can't tell. I'll finish the one I'm knitting and then will keep searching for some lovely yarn and will knit her another.

NowImmeagain · 16/12/2020 08:52

not sure ... Blush

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 16/12/2020 09:41

Oh that looks great Spamm!

I bought a couple of balls of wool/alpaca mix from Adrifil and it's the most gorgeous squishy yarn to knit with. I'm making a hat for DH out of it and I'll probably hand it over with good grace. Maybe.

I got fed up of socks and DH had asked me to knit my FIL a hat so I've finished something at last Blush

Yayyy! Definitely worth doing the Kitchener stitch for finishing off the toe btw. There are full instructions in the Ann Budd book.
