Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I've got a pattern booklet from the 70s I think which is for Barbie sized clothes. If I could knit, or knew someone who had Barbies it would be useful Grin
My nieces are just growing into them. Maybe they will want some 70s fashion Wink

SinkGirl · 19/11/2020 21:23

I just use magic loop on one long circular for any small diameter knitting

TheSunIsStillShining · 19/11/2020 22:11

Hope you don't mind a bit of a moan... I am 3/4 way through the body of a pullover and the yarn to continue hasn't arrived.... I timed it so that I'll have it, but royal mail is late.... I guess everyone can relate :)
I don't want to start something new (kidding myself) in the hope that it arrives tomorrow....
Would you start something or wait?

lazylinguist · 19/11/2020 22:27

Night all. I'm nearly at the toe of the second of MIL's socks. I want to make the Among Us amigurumi next, but I'm also meant to be making my knitted 'paper' chain!

TheSunIsStillShining just call it swatching and cast on with a clear conscience Grin

TheSunIsStillShining · 19/11/2020 23:06

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack
perfect!! I'll use that excuse :D

Knittingnanny · 19/11/2020 23:15

Sun, start something else, I would. If I’m not knitting I’m eating !

TheSunIsStillShining · 19/11/2020 23:29

@Knittingnanny
My resolve lasted exactly this long :)
I started on the merino socks my son wants. MillaMia merino. The mittens and scarfs are lovely, hope the sock will be durable as well.

(My son doesn't like sock yarn's very slight scratch. I find it great, but he is just picky)

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 19/11/2020 23:46

I taught myself to knit in August watching You Tube. I am currently knitting a scarf for Dad for Christmas and I have made one for mum as well.

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 08:14

whydoesitalwayshappentome - I remember knitting loads of scarves as presents the first Christmas after I learned to knit! Now it's generally socks or hats I make for people.

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince

There’s was a programme on BBC 4 a year or so ago about knitting.

There were these Scottish Highland women knitting and l think rounding up sheep simulataeneously? Now that IS doing knitting and other things.

They were highland Fair Iske knitters and the sped of the knitting was so fast.

I love that programme! I’ve watched it twice now. I’ve tried to find more documentaries on the history of knitting or a good book.

I hope I can join...you see, I’m a loom knitter. Some needle knitters look at us with disdain and think we are cheaters. I actually had a woman serving me in a yarn shop turn totally cold on me when I mentioned it!

Bonkers! I know nothing about loom knitting, but you are certainly very much welcome.
I might have to track down that BBC4 programme if it's still available.

The check of her Shock Petri you do wonder how some yarn shops stay in business. There's one in a town near to me and you'd swear the staff have a competition to see who can be the most rude to customers. There's no way I'd give them my money when there's much better shops elsewhere!

I use a knitting machine sometimes when I can't be bothered doing a load of stockinette, it's so handy.

everyonesmama · 20/11/2020 11:26

Hope I am not too late to join!

Always knitted from teenager and up, usual baby cardis etc and through a phase of toys. Not patient enough for any amount of adult wear!
But have always wanted to be able to crochet! The females in my family are all knitters and sewers but none can crochet. It's like the mythical thing that none of us can master - even the most accomplished. .......
Almost 2 years ago after major surgery I taught myself!!! A book and a bit of you tube and i am now a constant hooker!!!

Everyone is getting something crocheted from Christmas whether they like it or not!

CrochetBug · 20/11/2020 11:29

Well I slept so well last night my son was late for school because I slept through my alarm Blush Hes 14 but never gets up when his alarm goes off - something we need to work on.

Anyway... the Among Us pattern makes perfect sense today. No stitch count issues at all. No idea why it seemed so hard yesterday. Sleep really is a cure all it seems!

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 11:46

Well done for breaking the family crochet curse, everyonesmama! I'd like to be able to knit or crochet everyone something for Christmas (whether they like it or not Grin) but I'm too slow. It would take me at least all year! Maybe I should start now for Christmas 2020!

This thread is so nice. < happy sigh> when the whole world is in turmoil.

Is that not this year? please don't wish another 2020 on us Smile

They will be small additional presents in the main.

SoupDragon · 20/11/2020 12:16

please don't wish another 2020 on us

I'd quite like a second stab at 2020 to see if we can make it better second time round.

lazylinguist · 20/11/2020 12:20

Smile Exactly, TheEmoji. That's what I hoped by starting it. In my head I'm imagining we are all in a non-virtual Knit and Natter group in a large, cosy but tastefully decorated knitters'/crocheters' café/yarn shop/craft studio. Flat white or a chai latte, anyone? Maybe something stronger as it's Friday? Grin Don't spill it on your WIP.

Eek - sorry! Definitely meant 2021.

Ooh, new people on the thread! 👋👋👋

Here’s my progress since yesterday. I like how fast this is knitting up, but really really hope the sock will fit in the end. I started this pattern over the summer on 2.25 needles, but they ended up way too small, so I’m trying the next size up.

Will be holding my breath until I’ve turned that heel 😬

I know, it’s shocking! I’m in a few loom knitting groups on FB and loads of us have had it happen, you’d think they’d be happy we were getting involved (and making them some money!)

Currently working on a pocket scarf for my sister for Christmas, it’s a lot longer than this now but I keep forgetting to factor in the pocket which will make it shorter (it’s all done in one piece so you fold the ends to make the pocket, rather than sewing one on)

That’s gorgeous! As much as I fervently defend loom knitting, pictures like this do make me wish I could needle knit, you can do a lot on a loom but it’s not quite the same. But I’ve tried for years and just never gotten the hang of it, so I’m happy with my loom!

This is the tiny hat I've knitted for my friend's grandson.

The bolero jacket I started is a free pattern and a bit complicated, plus I'm not sure I've enough wool .. it said for a toddler, but it seems a bit big, so I might undo it and knit something else.

Has anyone seen a really good book with easy patterns for ages 0 to 3?
