The DNA scarf.....TAMUM! all I can say is WOW!

A 39 row repeat. Two cables which run in opposite direction with a 4 row repeat. A chart of the DNA helix that you have to remember to read backwards for the wrong side row. And it isn't symetrical!

OMG. Knitting this is almost as great an intelectual challenge as creating the structure from the X Ray diffraction pattern! Rosalind would have found it tough!

(I made a ... oh god I'm tired ... um, that loop thing, that only has one surface because of the twist? Moebius? Mobius scarf! Only the sizing was bad, so I frogged it.)

what colour is yours mb?

you can't do cables in different colours to the main garment, can you? that would be an icord really then, wouildn't it?

Oh, I have a texture pattern somewhere with cables in a different colour than the main garment. But you've got to twist in the ends a lot while doing it, I think? You'd want to be good at intarsia and cabling to do this, I think.

yes i hate intrasia and have never yet cabled

I'm doing it for a mate who loves purple , so I'm doing it in a very pale lilac. You can't do the cables in another colour. It would have to be pale I think for the pattern to be seen. IYSWIM!

Try something easier first if you are new to cable.....I've done lots in thepast and this is a real challenge!

Tamum is a very good knitter!

I think it can. It is mentioned in at least one of my books. I think it would be pretty.

I have, in theory, committed myself to making a beret with cabling in another colour, but of course have done nothing about it.

The yarn is synthetic, but lovely glossy black and silver for contrast ...

Oh, the cable could be in a different colour, but i don't think the DNA bit could because it 'moves' and you'd be knitting in 2 different colours someones, wouldn't you???

Yes, the DNA bar bit would pose a problem. First, because if you just do one bar of the DNA bar in another colour, it would be a hassle keeping track of the yarn to not end up with big trailing bits. And second, because changing colours on a purl row makes for an ugly transition, really.

It was the latter bit I was thinking about TBH.

Anyway it is blowing my tiny lkittle mind in one colour!

And mate is a good enough biochmist to ask me why the Sugar and phosphate groups were not done in different colours and why all the bases are the same

its the first time I've actually seen something I wanted to cable. I don't usually like cables, tbh.

had been faffing around doing a karyogram in - whats it called? reverse stocking stitch? where you reverse the k/p s mid row and back again? but really, its hard work and poorly defined, will icord it I think

What's a karyogram?

Reverse ss is just the other side of something done in ss - so you see all the purl bumps.

Ah, right. I would do those as, effectively, ribbing. Almost everything reverse ss, and those bits ss, obviously. Which is probably what you were doing?

What stripes? Oh, stripes on the raised bits? Yes, that's hairy. You could do them as intarsia I guess? At least the raised bits are ss not rss!

its faffing with the design so that it looks identifiable

Ah, but the problem is, if you put gaps in, you will be having, effectively, purl rows in your ribbing. The purl rows will stick up, as the boundary will be horizontal ...
