A 39 row repeat. Two cables which run in opposite direction with a 4 row repeat. A chart of the DNA helix that you have to remember to read backwards for the wrong side row. And it isn't symetrical!

OMG. Knitting this is almost as great an intelectual challenge as creating the structure from the X Ray diffraction pattern! Rosalind would have found it tough!

Fabbo though!

no but then there will be a gap

hmm

so ribbing

then a row or several of SS (dep on scale)

then more ribbing

I think I want it all one colour

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 09:42

But then it will make for stripes on the reverse ss, won't it? I think I'm not understanding you properly here ...

Fillyjonk · 18/02/2007 09:43

ah yes, i see, sorry

no this is true and one of the difficulties I am facing

i am considering some sort of lining to get around the problem

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 09:45

How will lining help?

Hmmm.

Problem is, the SS only sticks up if the boundaries are vertical. Random wandering purl bumps stick up.

Colour may be your only option, unappealling though the prospect is ...

Fillyjonk · 18/02/2007 09:49

am pmsl at us trying to chat knitting without a visual referance here.

lining means the other side wouldn't be visible, but also-I like double sided blankets.

I now think though, (and if I ever actually make this blanket...) I shall do a series of attatched icords, with the stripes in garter stitch. yes. that would work.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 09:51

That sounds sweet. Will you sew on the icords? Or have them come out of the blanket?

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 09:52

Ooooh, you could do them as double-knitting? Or do the whole thing as double-knitting? Gives some good colour options, without intarsia or fairisle. And makes for a beautiful double-sided effect ...

Fillyjonk · 18/02/2007 10:19

yes this was the plan but I fear that it will be rather heavy on the circulars...

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 10:35

Double knitting ... oh, wait, do you mean knitting the whole thing in the round, with two sides? That's not double-knitting. Double knitting is when you make a double-thickness object all at once. www.knittinghelp.com gets into it ...

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 10:35

I am really tired and stupid, so maybe I'm misunderstanding ...

Tamum · 18/02/2007 11:04

Hello mb The DNA cable is a bit challneging, you certainly need your wits about you don't you? I think it would be very hard to do two colours and make it look decent to be honest, there are bits in the pattern that are slightly fudged, and I think that's where the torsion thing comes in. Glad you're enjoying it though

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 11:05

What does 'torsion' mean?

Tamum · 18/02/2007 11:07

Ummm- sort of unnatural twisting.

marthamoo · 18/02/2007 11:23

I really believe that this thread could only happen on Mumsnet.

NadineBaggott · 18/02/2007 11:31

my ds1 had a torsion
he's fine now though

Tamum · 18/02/2007 11:52

I think you could be right marthamoo....

Oh poor him NB. I wasn't using the word in the context of testicles, honest

Blandmum · 18/02/2007 11:56

Now knitting a testicular tortion would be a challenge!

ouch th, it must have been nasty!

Anmd I have already had to un pick bits twice to correct errors in the sugar Phosphate backbone, I would do with a good DNA ligase on my pins!!!

Fillyjonk · 18/02/2007 12:41

oh i always use circulars for knitting blankets

how else would you get all those stitches on a needle?

actually i use circulars for a lot of things cos its less needles to drop

Tamum · 18/02/2007 12:44

I know the feeling martianbishop...

I have read your conversation a few times over filly and NQC and can confidently state that I have no idea what you are talking about. Well, I get the bits about the banding patterns on the chromosomes, but not the double knitting bit. Agree about circulars though, you can't do blankets on straight needles surely?

SherlockLGJ · 18/02/2007 12:48

Dear God and here am I getting excited over managing to knit a square for Maude.

Marina · 18/02/2007 12:50

I have limited myself to saving the link to the gorge baby blanket supplied by MB. Other than that, I am sadly lost on here

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 13:31

Ah, right, yes, I have used circulars for blankets for that reason. Actually, the last blanket I did, the border was knitted in the round, using several circulars at a time.
