Texere yarns - any good? Does their cotton knit up well?

Am looking for cotton on cones so that I can try out my knitting machine (which dh bought for me for my birthday in July and it's still in its box!). Texere yarns looks the cheapest and best choice and I have knitted a jumper (by hand) with their stuff a few years ago - however I seem to remember the colour ran in the red bit .

Have you used them? Are they good/reliable? Any particular recommendations (about their stuff or another company's?)

Great customer service Miaou and I have several cones of their Provence cotton dk in my stash (some wound into balls already so that ds could create alien horns with the cones).
The colours are less vibrant than premium brands like Debbie Bliss, Jaeger and Rowan tbh. A bit faded looking? And the yarn is a crunchier, slightly stiffer and less fluffy texture.
I made ds a slipover in it and it looks lovely, though - and the slight stiffness of the yarn made it a pleasure to handknit with.
Monaco cotton, which is thicker, may have been less of a good buy - disconcertingly like rug wool and quite clumpy. Have not knitted that up yet but can almost see it frying the insides of a knitting machine...

Oh brilliant Marina. Provence was the stuff I was looking at (I like the look of the Kilnsey Collection too. I think I might have knitted up with Cotton Top (?) before. I like the idea of the slightly faded look too.

Did you find the colours run at all? How do you wash them?

Blues and greens wash fine at 40 in the machine with no colour loss and no discernible shrinkage. Slightly disappointing germolene pink is still in stash! I would suspect any of the deeper colours will run slightly first off.

i have a couple of texere cones - and a brochure with samples to stroke

Dd gutted mine and draped bits of it over herself in a very salacious manner. The chunkier samples were put into a pushchair and given names.
It is now merely a collection of rather pulled-about bits of paper, boo hoo

marina I feel torn about dd's treatment of your samples...I feel positive about her embracing the World Of Yarns but I also feel as gutted as I would if my samples had been similarly mistreated. I'm not surprised though, sounds in character for her

I'd take your mum on a Rowan course...or there are those gorge sounding weeks at Sue's place in France on the Kangaroo website.

I think I will Marina, she needs a nice treat. We have bought a nice new sofabed so at least she'll get a good night's sleep when she comes to see us in a few weeks.

If I was to make a cardie for my 9 year old dd, how much (roughly) would I need? Would one cone be enough do you think or might I need more?

Provence - I'd go for two. Ds' slipover, I think, used one.
