Following on from my other thread I would like to thank you all for pointing me in the right direction wrt learning to knit.

That site you linked to NQC was fab, really good, I have taught myself how to cast on, purl, cast off, and reminded myself of the good old knit stitch! (I have a picture of my trial piece if anyone fancies a larf)

And now I have a project - I am going to knit myself a cosy for my cafetiere. There I've said it, can't go back on it now

So what are you all working on? Anyone want to join me in my Knitting Circle?

Hello Marina, t hanks for encouraging me to pick up the needles again this season with those squares.

Fillyjonk · 12/01/2007 20:54

whoah that was quick! I've never asked for a msg to be deleted before!

lol welshmum

ps are you in wales? I fantasise about a welsh mothers knitting group (oh god you're in australia or something aren't you?)

TooTicky · 12/01/2007 21:12

Filly, what are dpns? And what in Moominvalley is intrasia? It sounds decorative but slightly painful.

Fillyjonk · 12/01/2007 21:27

dpn=double pointed needles. for knitting in the round. good for socks.

intrasia=oh christ. its when you knit with 2 colours but is not fairisle

can I convince you to learn to knit socks with 2 circulars? actually I have a book kicking around that you're welcome to borrow. don't exactly know where it is but...it has pictures and instructions for lots and lots of socks, and felted slippers also...

Fillyjonk · 12/01/2007 21:28

oh and its def very painful. no way round it

SueW · 12/01/2007 22:05

Marina, sent something to you yesterday. MASSIVE apologies if it breaks the 5mm rule. Pls let me know and I will include stamps to value or similar when I post the next one to you. A small section of your stash has arrived here safely, thank you.

I started a pair of socks this evening whilst DD was doing judo (1.5 hours sitting 'watching'). First non-big-needle I have done since November but not been knitting much except cheapie wispy plus stash stuff to make scarves and hats.

My mum bought bamboo needles from Hong Kong, through ebay. Zillions of them for next to nothing.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2007 22:16

Oh, am I hosting the componenting again? Is it happening Down South? I haven't done much, will get going. Have two standard sized components.

Or am I not understanding this conversation at all?

tamum · 12/01/2007 22:22

No, I'm doing it NQC. I think it would be as well if we could stop the chat about it if no-one minds.

ignore that last question, sorry

Fillyjonk · 13/01/2007 08:09

lol welshmum

am in cardiff

take it you are from wales?

Twiglett · 13/01/2007 10:51

OK what's fairisle?

Fillyjonk · 13/01/2007 14:43

oh rofl

fairisle is when you carry both colours on the wrong side of the work, intrasia is when you dont. you use separate balls for each colour block.

its perfectly possible to use both techniques. i think most people use fairisle if they can get away with it? surely? any other way would be end-sewing madness.

surely it doesn't matter? surely

just use multiple colours in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

oh technically fairisle is something more specific but...thats how the word is used ime.

TooTicky · 13/01/2007 15:27

Okay, Filly, circulars? Are they the joined-together-needles? But why two? Surely one is enough unless you are knitting two socks simultaneously? Does one?? Do you???
I have scary memories of using 3 or 4 small double pointy ones to knit a (still unfinished) sock about 6 years ago. Wouldn't fancy doing that again. Far too easy to lose stitches. Tell me more about the circular ones. And about where you buy ethical wool that is actually WOOL. Once dd2 has enough socks I think I may embark on a small jumper.

TooTicky · 13/01/2007 15:29

Oh, and intrasia DOES sound painful.
And fairisle is an anagram of iris leaf. No relevance obviously.

TooTicky · 13/01/2007 15:30

Ooh, book, yes please

Twiglett · 13/01/2007 18:28

I simply don't understand the fairisle concept

I'm ok with the 2 balls of colour and changing at the end of the row, but why would I need to sew it? also if changing in the middle don't you just twist it every few stitches?

but really don't get HOW any other way would work if working with one or more colours .. doesn't that necessitate more than 1 ball of wool

(I'm really fairly new to this .. please talk to me like I'm an idiot )

Fillyjonk · 13/01/2007 18:56

greenfibres does ethical wool. you will have to remortgage though...oh and myriad. like i emailed you they have assured me it is not mulesd. i have now met the propriator and she is most lentilly and so I do feel quite confident.

or

spin your own with that nice local alpaca of yours

or. ok. I know i am fast becoming the MN queen of cheapskate knitting but this is what I do

buy jumpers and unpick them. then dye them with aforementioned coal-tar derived food dye (oh you can use onion skins or summat. pruni knows more.). they are "eco", to quote my mum, cos they are secondhand.

Glassofwine · 13/01/2007 18:58

Hello (puts head around door)

Can I join in?

Have knitted lots in the past and have a shed full of wool so am thinking of starting up again.
