CHALLENGE - 14 Craft Projects in 2014

I thought it may be a good idea to have a challenge of 14 craft projects in 2014 - anyone care to join?

The challenge is simple - list 14 projects that you want to complete in 2014 and use this thread to talk about progress / issues / share finished results. Projects can be anything - small, large, WIPs that you've had hanging round for ages, any type of craft.

I'll set a sister thread up in Arts and craft pictures for finished projects.

daisy

that is a good point! best to get it serviced first.

(I have a treadle Singer, which I inherted last year - it's in very good condition and after being serviced it works perfectly, never mind it was made in 1917! )

zing I've put a picture of the finished project on the pictures thread. My very first MN picture!

daisy it won't start sewing if the needle is down in the fabric - it just strains as if there's too much fabric. Makes corners very difficult. When it does go it suddenly goes off like the clappers. I asked my mum to have a go in case it was just me but she had the same problem. A friend has suggested it's the drive belt. Not sure if it's worth servicing / fixing as it was only a £50 cheapy from Argos that I got about 15 years ago. I have taken it all apart and cleaned it but that didn't help.

Like the idea of a second hand one though - we have a lovely sewing machine shop locally so I might go and investigate. I have a birthday coming up and my Dad has asked what I'd like so if my machine really has died perhaps this would be a good option.

Cupcakes - I agree it might not be worth servicing a £50 machine. Did you try replacing the needle and re threading top & bottom? I'm sure you did but I know my machines sometimes get a bit funny about going in or out of fabric , yet new needle and re threading solves the problem. You could always have a chat at the sewing machine shop while eyeing up new machines!

daisy it hadn't occurred to me to try a new needle! Will give that a go first.

I'm adding lots of things to my list... I have an 18mth old nephew and I'm torn between making things that I wanted to make for my DS's but didn't have time for or to buying the noisy toys possible as payback to SIL buying those things for my dc(!) On my make list now are superhero cape & mask, prince crown & cape, dinosaur tail, art folder/bag/wallet, wings.. Plus from another thread tissue box covers for Christmas hampers & myself....

My list:

  1. Finishing sewing knickers (did a course, have about 5 pairs cut out to sew)
  2. Finish bag (fabric cut, ready to sew)
  3. Journal52 ongoing
  4. The Documented Life (3&4 are combined into one journal)ongoing
  5. Finish journal pages for meet-up in April
  6. Make crayon/art kit for dn for Christmas
  7. Plan and make Christmas/b'day gifts
  8. Sew some clothes - I've made small items but not progressed to larger items & would like some tunic tops booking course this week
  9. Make wristwarmers from fleece lined fabric

10. Practise Lino prints and soft rubber block prints - use to make cards/fabric prints
11. Look into loom knitting - do hooded scarf project finished hat! started hooded scarf

Of course, have now seen the upload buttons...here's my initial journal52 pieces. I've also made a bunny toy for DS2. The photo is on my phone so I can't post it directly right now. Still got my first block of the house sampler quilt/wall hanging to design and stitch but there's a few days left of January! I'm also felting an emu (i know, it's different) so I think he'll be next up for his pictures. I've put a copy of a picture I've just finished too, of an emu too. I'm getting to quite like emus!

decided on more

#7 - tissue box covers

#8 - fabric boxes (both shoebox and hatbox shapes)

#9 - Advent Calendar(s) - not sure whether to do individual ones or a big one to share

#10 - get on with x-stitch birth samplers.
DS1 is 13 in July, I really want his done at least (as he enters teenage hood maybe it's a nice reminder how far he's come since being born. or is that stupid?!)

#11 - Christmas bunting, have already prepared it from a panel

#12 - Summer bunting

#13 - finish canvas work of Exploding star to cover piano stool

#14 - finish "Garden" wall hanging for MIL.

and a plus one - I made "Happy Birthday" fabric letters ages ago and used them pegged to a ribbon, but they have been washed and frayed since and in need of mending and probably best appliqued to fabric.
banner or bunting not quite sure yet
