What kind of blanket would you crochet?

DC2 is due in August and I've used some birthday money to buy the yarn so I can make a blanket. There are 11 colours, 100g of each colour.

Which pattern would you use if given free rein?

I'm making one of these in white, which was recommended by another mumsnetter.

It's very easy to do, and is growing very quickly!

Lol, duchesse, I have not picked up knitting needles since I was about 8, while I've been crocheting in quite a lot of my free time over the past 9 months or so. Crochet is probably a safer bet in my circumstances!

I do love both the suggestions :) It will be very colourful, whatever I do.

I'm a bit nervous of working with the yarn as it's much more expensive than the acrylic stylecraft special I have been using up until now.

Well you can always frog it and start again if it his wrong. More of a knitter so can't help with patterns sorry.

I've done attic24 granny stripe in stylecraft and its very popular with DC, DH and DCat! I think I prefer it to the ripple for snuggle factor.

It has taken me about 2 months to choose yarn. Hopefully I'll be able to choose a pattern more quickly! So many pretty ideas :)

I did a granny stripe in Stylecraft Special. White and teal stripes. It is nice :) I'm also currently working on one in plain Treble crochet that's about 2.5ft wide and will likely be about 5ft long if I ever finish. It is purple, cream and teal stripes.

I love my multi-coloured (Lucy pack) stripes but would love to do one in a more limited palette. Somehow though the idea of starting again is just too daunting. Confused

That's what I'm hoping, soupy. It was mainly looking at old threads on here that made me choose it. I am a bit shocked that I've spent £80 on yarn though. Baby had better appreciate this blanket!

I'm utterly rubbish at working out how much yarn I need for things so maybe something with squares or circles joined together would be better and then I can decide how big to make it as I go along.

Will have a look on ravelry and see if anything else catches my eye. Every pattern I've shown DH so far has had the response 'that's nice'. So he's no help!

I know what you mean, Barbara. I did a pattern working in the round after I finished my granny stripe blanket. I definitely needed to do something different.

It's lovely yarn. I've used it to make a stripy blanket like this and a granny square blanket.

At the moment I'm liking spotty blankets.

you could always make your own pattern, there's a photo on my profile of a blanket using 2 different sizes of granny square that I think works well. You can probably make a couple of baby blankets with that amount of wool Smile

I haven't bought the pattern for the babette but I reckon all the squares are filled in granny squares, with the only variations the number of rounds worked. You would certainly be an expert at sewing in ends by the time you had finished!

I've found crochet fairly easy to pick up, and it's probably even easier if you're already a knitter as you are used to counting.

Babette is easy to crochet, it's a pain to stitch together.
It's very similar to granny square,not quite the same.
I want to make one of the Purl Bee patterns - the big granny one, where you start in the middle and just go round and round.
No fiddly joining

Jolly, if you use ebay you can save tons of money on yarn should you become seriously hooked like some people I know.
