Crocheted coat - is this 'stealthily' difficult?

I need to frog an attempt at a knitted jacket for my daughter which has gone horribly wrong.

She still needs a jacket/cardie and I've found this which I love.

I've done a swatch to get my head around the woven stitch but are there any pitfalls lurking in it? It it going to be horribly difficult? The pattern looks quite easy but I may be missing something major...

Can anyone one glance through it for me?

That looks like it'll be an awful lot easier than it reads! Reckon it'd work for a baby boy in neutral colours?

It's basically: ch width of sleeve. Work pattern for length of sleeve. Work pattern part way across to make neck opening. Ch some more to get back to sleeve width. Work pattern to length of 2nd sleeve.

Sew sleeves. Work pattern from front to front to get length. Finish off and add border, don't forget the button holes

:)

Ooh, it sounds promising then! I think it would look lovely in navy with red and white trim? And if you felt it was too girly, could you reduce the flare in the lower half and make it shorter too?

Or dark brown with beige trim would look nice too.

Dp reckons cream and cables. I shall attempt it later Hmm

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 21/10/2012 17:34

Ok, ch 44 dc into 4 from hook is never ever going to give you 42 sts across. Dc into 3rd from hook.

And at my fairly average tension I've done a row of 32 to get 8 1/2"

Otoh, working from the measurements+my invented cable pattern it's coming along nicely!

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 08:38

12cm into first sleeve Grin

6 rows down 2nd sleeve

Mind you, I've not actually given birth yet so doing the smallest size :o

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 09:57

Blimey you're quick! Dd is nearly 13 months so I'm trying vaguely to persuade her to watch the strictly results show whilst I crack on.

It seems to be a bit of a yarn eater though - am getting a bit worried...

Fp/bp tc's knock half your stitch length off, i find. Otoh, it makes for a super thick snuggly jacket!

The pattern calls for 80% merino 20% silk - bet that doesn't get worn to the park! I'll stick to cheapskate crylic, ta :o

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 10:08

Cheap skate acrylic here too - dusky raspberry darling, don't you know Grin

Ooh, sounds fab! Plain cream here, although i might go for funky buttons

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 11:23

How are your cables working out? I must confess I wouldn't know how to start cabling in crochet!

OP posts:
PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 22/10/2012 11:51

I had to frog about 6 rows because I'd twisted in the wrong place Angry

Cables are remarkably easy. My sleeves are 33 sts wide: 11htc, 4 f/bptc (depending on right or wrong side), htc, f/bptc, htc, 4 f/bptc, 11 htc. Then 20 rows of 10 tc for the back, ch 24, carry on.

To do the twists, you f/bptc in the 3rd then 4th f/bptc from the hook, then work back into the 1st and 2nd. It requires a bit of hook manoeuvring but looks fab - and I've only done 3 twists per sleeve.

I plan to make a plain tc body, then cable up the front :)

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 14:04

It sounds lovely!

I'm still plodding on with the first sleeve, but I'm doing the 18 month size and there.s a lot of it!

I'm going to attempt cables at some point Smile

I will resort to blagging other people into knitting buying stuff by that point, I'm sure! I have a tendency to over stretch myself (diy stuff mainly) so crochet forces me to sit down (8 months pregnant)

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 22/10/2012 16:02

Grr Angry made the back too wide and it looked stupid when i sewed the sleeves up so had to unpick, frog back and I'm now redoing sleeve 2 Angry

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 16:39

Grrr, that is very irritating!

OP posts:
PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 22/10/2012 18:25

nearly back to where i was!

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 19:16

I may be about to have a yarn crisis Sad

I technically have 900m of yarn... However, I've got 2 full balls (300m each) and have ripped out another 60g worth but I can't find the remaining yarn! I've either got a knitted piece somewhere lurking, or a random bit somewhere. But I can't find it and it's been discontinued [cry]

OP posts:
PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 22/10/2012 19:49

Argh! Have you got anything in the same weight and composition but different colour to do the front/collar bit in?

Daisybell1 · 22/10/2012 20:48

Yes, I've got various colours... I was struggling to think of something to match the main colour - I'm resorting to grey and white, very boring! I'll just keep ploughing on and see how far I get...

OP posts:
PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 22/10/2012 22:34

White cables round the front could be cute?

I've managed to get the sleeves facing opposite directions Hmm will try again tomorrow!

Daisybell1 · 23/10/2012 15:15

Oh no! At work today but it's in my bag kind of in a comfort blanket way...

Still panicking about the lack of colour but pushing on regardless!

OP posts:
PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 23/10/2012 17:21

At least yours will look ok at bolero length :o

Daisybell1 · 23/10/2012 18:31

I've got enough yarn!!!
