You can check in but you can never leave...

Ok, one more question... When you do the 2 chains, and then do the next treble in to the chain space of the row before... How do you manage that? To my mind, that would then pull your 2 chains back down towards the middle rather than staying at the top to make corners, no?

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 27/10/2012 22:02

US terminology - Back (or Front) Post Treble in English

Instead of working in the top of the stitch, you wiggle your hook around the back (or front) of the stitch - the long sticky up post.

One of my favourites, i have a thing about cables. PidjChick will be acquiring a cable cardi as soon as MrsY's blanket is safely in Pistey's hands!

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 27/10/2012 22:03

It does temporarily, Trazzle, but then it pulls back up because the stitch is quite long :)

Trazzletoes · 27/10/2012 22:05

Thanks pidj.

Somersaults · 27/10/2012 22:14

I think I need to give it a go to get my head round it. Can't visualise it. Going to bed in a mo though. Teething DD hasn't slept through (even nearly) all week so totally wiped out. Will give it a try tomorrow and may b back if I get stuck. Well I'll be back even if I don't but you know what I mean...

theodora · 27/10/2012 22:44

Hi Trazzle, I only taught myself to crochet a couple of weeks ago and found Attic24's tutorials brilliant. Google attic24, sorry am on my phone so can't link. I'm now trying a ripple blanket according to her instructions and it has started out ok Smile

Somersaults · 28/10/2012 11:00

Ok, I get the back post stuff now but it ain't half fiddly!

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 28/10/2012 12:43

Yeah but it looks fab! Want a pic of the cardi sleeve I've finished?

Somersaults · 28/10/2012 12:45

Oooh yes please! The square I'm doing does look nice and pretty with it. I'll post a pic when it's done. Just having to fit in short crochet bouts in between dealing with over excited DD who's busy trying to tug our fireguard off the wall.

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 28/10/2012 12:55

Pic on profile :)

Somersaults · 28/10/2012 15:00

Is that cabling done with the back post stitches?

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 28/10/2012 15:17

The "background" is half trebles, the cables are either front post or back post trebles depending on which side I'm working.

Ch 34 htc in 3rd from hook and across - 32 sts
Ch2 turn. 7 htc, 4 fptc, 2 htc, 4 fptc, 7 htc
Ch2 turn. 7 htc, 4 bptc, 2 htc, 4 bptc, 7 htc

Repeat to length.

The twists are done by fptc into the 3rd and 4th then 1st and 2nd tc. Takes a bit of wiggling, but easier once you get used to it.

It's about 5" across in dk on a 4mm hook. It'd make a nice scarf 4 htc, 4 f/bptc x3, 4htc and be about 6", too [hwink]

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 29/10/2012 16:37

It came to my attention one day that I don't even know the names of the stitches I do Blush

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 29/10/2012 16:40

They're different in UK and US terms, MummyDuck. And it's only important if you need to describe what you're doing [hgrin]

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 29/10/2012 16:46

I think I tend to follow the us terms [hgrin]

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 29/10/2012 18:04

Single crochet (sc) = through work, yo, back through work, yo, through 2 loops

Half double (hdc) = yo, through work, yo, back through work, yo*, through all 3 loops

Double (dc) = as hdc to * then yo, through 2, yo, through last 2 loops.

Anyone used a Nicki Trench book/pattern? I am very tempted by her book Cute & Easy Crochet (pls don't all go and order it from Amazon so there are none left before I decide!)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/10/2012 19:06

I've got that book Seabright and the Cute and Easy Animals one. When I bought the first one I was more or less a beginner and found the basic instructions very clear. I haven't done that many of the patterns from it as most of them are just not really stuff I'd want to make, but I've made two each of two types of cushion (circles and ripple square) and found them pretty straightforward.

The wools she recommends are very expensive, I have been using cheaper alternatives.

I have that book and really love it. So far have made the teddy bear, kitten purse and ripple cushion. And a granny cushion using her joining method which I like as gives texture.

Used different yarn though, mostly Wendy DK Merino which is gorgeous to crochet with.

Really rate the book.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 29/10/2012 20:34

Thanks pidjin Grin

Trazzletoes · 31/10/2012 07:20

I have the book too! it looks lovely on my coffee table

StellaMarie · 31/10/2012 21:53

Just checking in! I was taught to crochet in the US and was involved in Project Linus over there. Current projects include blankets for my expanding tribe of nephews and nieces and some Christmas decs.

I've just finished my 2nd little hug and have felt honoured to provide squares for several Woolly Hugs.

I'm trying to teach my daughter to crochet before my Mum and MIL corrupt her with 2 needles! Wink

PurplePidjInAPointyHat · 31/10/2012 21:57

Welcome in, Stella, I've just handed over MrsY's Hug to Pistey if any of yours were on there?

Seabright · 01/11/2012 21:44

Am feeling a bit chuffed with myself tonight, and am on my own, so thought I'd share with you all, if that's OK. I am a new crochet-er (3 mths ish) and have now almost finished my first US pattern (so have had to translate all the DC to TC etc) and have learnt a new stitch - Half-treble.

Sorry to blow my own trumpet over something pretty small, but was so happy!
