Hello all, i went for my 12 week scan and showed a high NT but all structure of baby okay in regards to growth, nose bone, arms, legs, head etc. But because of high NT they have taken my bloods and then referred me for a CVS today in london which they confirmed high NT and fluid on chest exact words were; generalised skin oedema and fluid in the fetal chest (hydrops). We suspect a cardiac anomaly but the small size of the baby limits the ability to diagnose this for certain. I’ve only just turned 24 years old and this just doesn’t seem right to me nor fair due to my luck the last few years. I have got a lot of satisfaction out of some of the replies on here but i can only see some dated in 2011-2014 but i am new to this. I just wondered if anyone had any advice, had anything similar and it’s all very grey at the moment and they seem quite negative about the high NT which i am prepared for the worse but just want to hold some hope as really don’t want to loose the baby. Thanks x

Hi

I can’t give you any advice but can give you a handhold. We’ve just been told our NT measurement was high (3.2 at 10 weeks so will be worse by 12) and it’s a horrible stressful time.

I actually found lots of positive (and negative) stories on this message board and all I can say is try not to google!

Wishing you all the best in these tough times

Liv2308 · 24/08/2023 14:11

I just got a 1 in 2 chance of Down’s syndrome and a 1 in 36 for Edwards/Patau’s but my hCG 109.7 - 2.37 MoM and my PAPP-A 3127 - 107 MoM. I think it is just this high because of my 5.1mm NT. Has anyone has this and it has still come back okay when you got the CVS results. I should be getting them back tomorrow but just trying to get all information and hold out hope until then x

@Liv2308 sorry you are going through this, I just have and it was the most awful time. I got a more than 1 in 2 chance of t21, although that was based on bloods as NT was fine, but they anyway said that 50% t21 babies don’t show up on the scan so told me not to read too much into the NT…Then I got a higher chance NIPT and then abnormalities on cvs too. Yet by some absolute miracle my amnio quick result came back clear, as did the full karyotypes for both cvs and amnio. They’ve concluded it’s most likely confined to the placenta and I’m keeping my fingers crossed from now on. It was 4 weeks of absolute hell so I’m glad you got the cvs quickly Vs waiting for the nipt first. Just wanted to share the experience as it shows it can happen, and that it’s the amnio that is more reflective of the baby. Wishing you all the best, I have so much empathy for anyone facing this. I agree about the perils of Google but know it’s hard not to! xx

Liv2308 · 24/08/2023 20:26

@CB1209 thats amazing. So happy for you and it gives me some hope. Do you mind me asking how comes they come to the conclusion of 1:2 with your DS as I believe my PAPPA A is perfect and my hcg is at 2.37 but I don’t think that’s as high as I have been seeing elsewhere. They just told me that my 2:1 was more based on my NT and not my bloods nor my age (24). I’m really trying to hold onto the hope of the positive stories on here and the fact everything else on my scan looks okay etc nasal bone etc. I’m hoping for results tomorrow but just want all the information I can get in the meantime. Thanks again x

CB1209 · 24/08/2023 21:21

@Liv2308 I’m a lot older than you (41) so that had something to do with it! But my Hcg was 7.7 so much higher than yours and Papp-a was also low at 0.27. But they did find some abnormalities in the placenta so guess that’s why it was so high. From all the reading I did that screening test can be a bit of a statistical black box so hopefully it will all work out for you - I don’t know so much about the high nt as didn’t look into it but I’m sure I remember reading many stories about how it can resolve itself. It’s just horrible waiting for the results, I really feel for you. I really hope you get good news tomorrow x

Liv2308 · 27/08/2023 08:43

@CB1209 thanks so much for your hope. We did get good news all 3 of downs, edwards and pataus come back fine and we found out we are having a little boy. I’m still so worried about this skin odema and hydrops as i have looked this up and does not look promising but i’m just having some hope from the good results so far x

Fantastic news about your blood results :) hope things resolve with everything else going on with your little one!

Valwithhope · 05/09/2023 17:18

@Liv2308 just following your story as very similar to mine. How has it been going for you so far regarding the fluid in the chest? Great news about your blood results!

I had my 12 weeks scan yesterday and NT fluid is 4.5mm and had fluid around the chest and abdomen which making me extremely worried as we are dealing with more than two things. I have an appointment with specialist tomorrow and might will be doing cvs. Very very worried what's going to happen tomorrow. I just want to know if there's hope.

Liv2308 · 05/09/2023 17:59

@Valwithhope hey lovely, sorry to hear you’re going through this. So my experience since then CVS come back fine along with the microarray. Went for another scan with my local hospital which showed my NT has dropped to 2.2mm and no fluid now on the chest therefore now no hydros. I feel like everyone was so negative and gave me the “it’s very unlikely the baby is normally fine etc”. However, now my baby looks normal. My only issue currently which they think is from the CVS is that i now have a sub chorionic haemorrhage so half my sac is filled with blood. But i do think the CVS was necessary for us so now results have come back fine i wish i didn’t but i do think it was necessary. Try keep positive. I am still worried myself but i have another scan in 2 weeks back with london i’m regards to the heart which will be my 16 week scan.

Can i ask how far you are? I went for my 12 week scan early at like 11 + 4 because i went for a private scan. My nhs wasn’t till tuesday last week so i wish i just waited as none of this would have happened. But first pregnancy and i wasn’t to know x

OP posts:
Valwithhope · 05/09/2023 18:27

@Liv2308 it's good to hear how everything turned out about the fluid and the NT but so sorry about haemorrhage! When you think you are out of the woods then there's something else...but I completely understand why you did go for the cvs. When is your 16 weeks scan?

I'm 12 + 4 and just had the scan yesterday. I still hope there's so much gotta change as baby is so little!
I have my appointment with fetal medicine tomorrow morning and I already opted for CVS as I'm sure they will offer and I need to know otherwise how can we possibly move on and decide what to do.
I feel you as everyone just giving me the sad eyes and seems worried, but I have know idea still how worrying this is!! I know it's bad but how bad? 😞

Thank you for sharing all this you are giving me so much hope about the NT fluid decreased and the fluid in the chest. It's so awful we meant to enjoy this time and we are just full off worries.
First pregnancy too x

Valwithhope · 26/10/2023 16:29

@Liv2308 How are you doing lovely? X

Jude0806 · 30/01/2024 17:02

NT 4.9mm
I’m 12 weeks 3 days pregnant and today was our scan, we had 2 previous private scans, due to a previous miscarriage, nothing was picked up, but they are very quick, nhs was much more in depth. Baby didn’t play ball very well, but they suspect NT is 4.9mm which worried me a little, then I had a phone call with an urgent referral to a London hospital with in 5 days.
It was a bit of information overload, and I got a bit emotional hearing the possibilities.
Hopefully I will hear soon, but please could any one tell me if they had similar and the out comes good and bad.
I am 41 so this goes against me.

Jude0806 · 30/01/2024 17:06

I’m so sorry, I meant to start my own post and added to yours 🙈 I am very new to this and clearly showing my age

Liv2308 · 30/01/2024 21:43

@Valwithhope hey val, sorry I haven’t responded I haven’t been on here for a while. So baby is doing very well. I am 35 weeks tomorrow. No additional complications and all scans looking well with baby all scans on kidneys, heart, brain, femur etc everything is just perfect.

The only issue I have had is gestational diabetes that I have only been diagnosed with this week and that my waters broke early at 31 +5 weeks however he has stayed in fine with no signs of early labour and with close monitoring twice a week at the hospital and no sign of infection etc all has been well. They suspect that I may have had early waters from my haemorrhage earlier on in the pregnancy from my CVS but obviously can never say how. I am being induced next week due to all the complication I had at the start and that you don’t go beyond 37 weeks if you have had your waters break but he is already 5 pounds so this is all looking positive.

I hope all is well with you? Do you have an update at all? Xx

@Jude0806 Hey, I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this as I can remember the day I was told and there is so much going through your mind. However, I wish I didn’t jump to conclusion until I had actual facts because I feel like it ruined the most chapter of my life so far. If they haven’t picked it up at private scans I feel like this is a positive from my experience as we found out at a private scan who actually told us it was a higher NT and we was in and out as well. They did confirm it at NHS but if they are only suspecting again I wouldn’t jump to conclusions yet. Also, please know that if it is a high NT it doesn’t mean that something is wrong in my case for instance… don’t get me wrong baby is coming next week so we can’t be sure but i have had such in depth scans that and since 13 weeks they have all been clear. So technically if i had waited until my NHS scan which was a week after nothing would have been flagged up because from 11 weeks to 13 weeks my NT had dropped to normal, my hydrops had gone and i only had a haemorrhage as i went ahead with the CVS. I was sent for a CVS in London the next day. From my experience i would say to wait before rushing for the CVS - if this is even in your options. Even if it’s just a week as i say by a week all my fluid had gone.
My baby has been fine since on all scans and i have had A LOT. Heart, kidneys etc. The only issue is that my waters went early at 31 + 5 weeks but this hasn’t caused an issue as I haven’t actually gone into early labour. I am being checked twice a week and no signs of infection and all monitoring on baby/bloods are fine. I am being induced next week just as you don’t go any further than 36/37 when your waters have gone and baby is already 5 pounds. They suspect that my waters going early may have been from haemorrhage of CVS. But again even that hasn’t caused issues. Please try stay positive for yourself and baby and i know it’s a lot easier said than done. But i had someone i met on here who was from the same town as me weirdly enough with the exact same situation and her baby was born perfectly fine and healthy last week and that is someone from the same hospital area so its not unusual for it to work out fine even when the hospitals give you scary statistics. Sending you love liv x

Thank you so much for your reply :-) I hope everything goes well next week, please keep us updated. From day one we worry about our babies and it never stops (I have a 23 year old and 19 year old too ).
I need to stop panicking I think until I get more tests. I get they have to tell you all the scenarios and I’d rather they did but it’s so worrying

Valwithhope · 31/01/2024 21:55

Hi @Liv2308
I'm.so glad to hear from you and everything goes well with baby!!
Sorry to hear about your outcomes because if the CVS but seems you are handling everything very well which I think the best way to do in this scenario. I couldn't agree more with you, if I could go back I would try not to jump into conclusions but I suppose it's easier said than done. When I was there at 12 weeks, it's hard to stay positive!

I'm 34 weeks now and everything is going well with baby boy! We had 20 weeks anomaly and heart scan which was all good and we had another 2 scan after that with no issues. I have been discharged from FMU so I can go to my hopefully last 36 weeks scan soon! I'm all good apart from having terrible stiff fingers every morning which will get better during the day but it's not ideal!

I really hope everything will go well next week and I bet you can't wait to meet baby soon!! We are nearly there mama, please update us! Xx

@Jude0806 I can only advise the same as Liv above. Try not to jump I to conclusions and wait for the results if you decide with the CVS. I had exactly the same 12 weeks scan with 4.5 NT. We had the CVS done which went well and got the all clear. We had scans after that with no issues and now I'm 34 weeks with a very active baby boy and hopefully everything will be fine now. They not to overly worried as it takes away the joy. I know it's easier said than done but see. And heard many success stories. Val x

Good evening, well I’ve had the cvs and everything came back clear, he’s had a detailed heart scan that was all normal, I have one more heart scan at 21 weeks, but I’m feeling much more hopeful.
I hope for you so much your baby gets the all clear, it’s such a horrible time, and I really thought that was it, something was definitely wrong, I worked my self up so much. It was a really traumatic time.
But please know you can have a good out come, obviously it’s not a sure thing, but just know that a high NT is not always bad.
I wish you all the best.
please update me

Molsrose94 · 27/02/2024 20:35

Thank you so much

Valwithhope · 28/02/2024 00:07

@Jude0806 I'm so happy to hear these news! Glad everything is fine and you will be able to relax now and enjoy your pregnancy! X

@Molsrose94 just like said above it's such a difficult time but try not to jump into conclusions before you have the results. I wish I would.have given myself more time to digest and try to think rationally but it's very hard. Hope it will be all fine for you!

Molsrose94 · 28/02/2024 07:04

Thank you val

I have decided that if my bloods come back low risk I will just wait for the scans going forward

I will only go ahead with the invasive if the results come back high risk for patau or edwards x

Molsrose94 · 28/02/2024 18:00

Hello all

so my results are back

1 in 2 for downsydrome
and 1 in 5 for edwards and patau syndrome

going for invasive tomorrow morning but the odds are not good :(
so so upset

I know it's easier said than done but try and stay positive. It's an awful wait.

I had the amino and it was too bad. Just uncomfortable. Good luck and look after yourself.
