1.11 chances with NT 4.2

Hi I’m 36 and 14 weeks 4 days pregnant. I’ll be 36.11 when my baby is born. At my dating scan 4 days ago, my baby had NT of 4.2 so I was made to do the combined test. I was also referred to a consultant at the fetal medicine unit at St. George’s hospital yesterday where we did the cvs. The midwife called this morning to tell me the results of the combined test came back positive and I have a 1.11 chance. Cvs test results due to come in hopefully tomorrow. This is my fourth pregnancy; I miscarried the last three and was praying this baby would come out healthy. The waiting and anxiety is beyond me. Anyone had a similar case but had a success story? I am just praying and trusting God for a good news tomorrow. Please keep me in your prayers.

Hello - so sorry to hear you’re going through this. The anxiety is unreal. I am 17 weeks pregnant and found out our baby had an increased NT at the dating scan (4.7). My combined screening came back as 1 in 3 for Downs and low risk for Edwards/Pataus. I am 38 and believe that the NT measurement plus my age are what largely accounted for the risk given. I was beside myself to receive the call about the combined screening - it did nothing but make my anxiety about the NT 100x worse. I too had 2 miscarriages before this pregnancy and that makes it even more difficult when you get to 12 weeks successfully but then receive worrying news. I really empathise.

Just to share that I have since had the Harmony test and all came back low risk. I then had an amnio last week to look at the whole spectrum of chromosomes. My initial results confirmed the Harmony result and the baby is clear for T21/18/13 which is such a relief. Still feeling anxious for the full results but nice to have some good news at least.

I am thinking of you - it is the most awful time especially when you first find out and there’s the shock to deal with too 😔 The waiting is so hard - I had my dating scan on Christmas Eve and then had to wait until New Year’s Eve to get the results of the Harmony. It was such a difficult Christmas for us. I really really hope you get good news tomorrow 🙏🏻 Remember that the combined screening really isn’t that accurate and there are many positive stories out there for increased NTs. Hi there. Just chiming in. I had an NT measurement of 3.7mm at my 12 week scan. Opted for CVS which came back normal, and was also referred for a fetal echo to look at baby's heart, as well as an early anatomy scan (followed by a 20 week anatomy scan). I'm 30 weeks now and thus far, all of our scans and tests have been fine.
I noticed it sounds like you had your scan at exactly 14 weeks...? Just wanted to mention to you that technically they are supposed to complete the nuchal measurement by 13+6. I know that's only a day off, but I've heard people say that even at 13+2 or 13+3 the baby was already measuring too large to complete an accurate measurement. The larger the baby is, the larger the "normal". So it's possible that affected things slightly for you.
Also, I'm in the U.S. but after our nuchal measurement, the doctor wasn't even going to bother with the bloods for the combined screening. I asked him to, and he finally did, but essentially they told me that the nuchal measurement being so high (along with my age--36) was automatically going to give me a super high risk ratio. So try not to stress too much about the blood portion.

@georgiablue2 yes I had my scan at exactly fourteen weeks because I was abroad when I found out I was pregnant so that sort of delayed the scan. Thank you for the reassurance. Hopefully I’ll have good news for you tomorrow. Thanks for the support. Xxx

Hi Op . Mine was 1 in 2 for my second DC. I had the CVS straight away that day.. The week long wait for the results was agonising.. it came back all fine. He's now 9. I do remember how difficult this period is though. Good luck x

Thank you all for your kind words. The call did come through and our worst fear has been confirmed. Baby has been diagnosed as having trisomy 21. We will see GP tomorrow for the next line of action. To anyone going through this, I wish you the best of luck. Xxx

My daughter has Down’s syndrome and it’s possibly been a different journey to what we expected, but she’s now 4 and doing absolutely brilliantly. She had no heart or bowel issues, learnt to walk at three, ands now has loads of words and is starting to build more and more sentences. I am currently watching her sing along to nursery rhymes on YouTube!

Do have a look at the antenatal/new parent support packs on the Downs Syndrome Association website (www.downs-syndrome.org.uk) are they are really informative. Also, the “Positive About Downs Syndrome” website and Sarah Roberts’ FB blog “Don’t Be Sorry” about her 6 year old Oscar are well worth reading.

Hello all I don’t know if you are still following this thread, but after cvs confirmed my baby as having downs, we opted for medical termination which was done on the 5th February. We found out we are pregnant again and as usual we had the combined screening and NIPT. The NT was 2.8. The midwife called this morning to to inform us we have a chance of 1:150 of having another baby with downs, but we have to wait for four 7 more days for the NIPT results to come before we can be certain. I’ve been worried sick all day and I want to ask if anyone has had something similar but had a healthy baby? I really need this baby to stay as I’m tired physically and emotionally to even think of anything bad happening.

@Koko2 I didn't want to read and run. I've just had my pregnancy confirmed as t21 and additional health issues. I believe the risk is around 1 on 150 for it to happen again but if you look at the percentage its less than 1%. Thoughts are with you xx

@Koko2 sorry about your previous pregnancy, that must have been so hard. My current pregnancy, my baby's NT was 2.2mm and my risk came out 1/110 which is classed as high risk. The NIPT came back low risk (1/10,000) though.

1/150 is less than a 1% chance so the odds are really in your favour but I totally understand why you're so worried given your previous pregnancy outcome.

In terms of the NT, my son had a NT of 2.7mm, so almost the same as yours and he was born healthy. It's well within the 'normal' limit.

Hi @Koko2 I commented back in January - I am so sorry to hear of your TFMR 💔 You’ve certainly had a rough ride 😢 Congratulations on your pregnancy - I am sorry to hear of the worry you’re going through although it does sound as though that tends to be the odds given for subsequent pregnancies following a T21 diagnosis. The NT is reassuring. Do you know what your hcg and papp-a levels aren’t? I know time will stand still for you whilst you await the NIPT results but I’m sending you so much strength and keeping everything crossed for the best possible outcome. Hang in there, the odds are hugely on your side xxxx

@Aria2015 thank you for your encouraging words. Sometimes I wonder if I would still be high risk if I didn’t have a history. I really need this baby to stay as the older I get the higher my risk. Waiting these past few days for the NIPT results has been nerve wracking, I pray to have a different story to tell by the end of the day. Remember me in your prayers... I need it now more than ever. @jmm499 thank you for checking back and thanks for your encouragement through this. I was really excited about this pregnancy but my joy was short lived and anxiety set in. I really do not want to go through what I went through with my previous pregnancy in February. This pregnancy is exactly 14 weeks today and incidentally I’m expecting the NIPT results today. No the midwife didn’t tell me the results of the hcg and pappa, I was emotional but hunny said she mention she was optimistic due to the fact that the NT was encouraging. I really pray she’s right. And tomorrow being our wedding anniversary, I want nothing more than a positive news.

I've not had a second high risk result (since pregnancies don't want to stick....) but the odds are in your favour and I've got everything crossed that you get your NIPT results today and that they will be a big relief.
In your original post you said you were 36 (I think, so sorry if I'm wrong...) and this will unfortunately play a huge factor in the calculations of the total risk. As it's 'only' 1/150 and you're 'old' (as in older than 35 which is where the big step of the calculated risk is - oh please don't take offence from me using the word old, it's only in a statistical way! And I feel awful for even saying this!!) there's a MASSIVE chance that everything is ok! I've got everything crossed for you!

Everything crossed for a good result today. With my second pregnancy I opted to go straight for the NIPT as I knew my odds of a high chance (NOT risk, people. My daughter is not a risk!!) result would be artificially inflated due to Cara having Down’s syndrome. So, I have no idea what the combined test would have come out as, but the Iona test was 1 in several hundred thousand and Jessica arrived without that extra chromosome. The girls are now nearly 5 and 2 and the best of friends!

@jmm499 you are way too kind. The call did come through around 4pm. When I realised it was the midwife, my intention was to ask her to go straight to the point and skip any pleasantries 😁, then she said “relax, I’ve got good news. Your results came back as less than 1 in one million”. I was instantly drenched in sweat and don’t know when tears started falling. Then she said I should go ahead and enjoy my pregnancy and confirmed my anomaly scan. In as much as I am happy and want to stay happy, I’ve read stories about people getting scary scans at their anomaly scan. Will try to be happy and take a day at a time. Thank you once again for your kind words and for staying with me through this.

@NoCallerID no offense at all... 😂😂 in fact that is exactly what my husband said when the midwife called to tell us the results of the combined test. The NIPT came back as less than 1 in one million. In my next life, I’ll try and have babies early to do is this stress.
