Those bully breeds need to be on the banned dogs list.

It's not the dogs it's unfortunately the type of people who own them

Oh behave.

I am a cat person. By your logic I should be allowed to keep a Lion or Tiger if I promised to look after it well.

No I mean they're normally chavvy scum, who walk around with these dogs as a status symbol.
Unfortunately people seem to forget that dog breeds including, but not limited to, large "aggressive" breeds tend to go in trends. German Shepherds, dobermans, Rottweilers have all been the IT breed for banning at one time or another because they were the reason for many attacks on children/adults/other animals. I'm sure some people will disagree with me but all of the above breeds can be and are lovely dogs, but only in the right hands. Now unfortunately as most trends go, the chavvy drug dealer "roadman" types like to jump on the bandwagon, and then this is where the issues with big powerful breeds tend to come. They have no intention on training their dogs or treating them well, and they don't really care at all about their responsibility as a dog owner.

Dogs are the UKs answer to guns in the US.

Considering gun crime is the leading cause for child death in the us, I think statistically you are wrong.

I am not at all comfortable about any pet ownership that results in death and significant injury. Or domestic ownership of animals bred to guard and attack.

Neither am I. Yet her we are. Attack after attack. Year after year.

The only conclusion is that we are comfortable with it. Because if we weren't, we'd move heaven and earth to do something. You know, like the incoming laws to sort out the small boats. Clearly that was serious enough.

I'm old enough to remember when there use to be a dog licence. Which means I am happy with my world view of "if it mattered ...". Because I've seen mountains moved when things really mattered.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 20:43

I would like a proper licensing system. £1000 for each dog. Anyone who wishes to breed their dog needs to pay another hefty fee. All dogs chipped as a condition of their licencing.

That £1000 x however many dogs in the UK should pay for lots of dog wardens. Dog wardens should be given the right to humanely kill any dog they come across which is not licensed/chipped. No appeals, no seizing pending a court case, no right for the owner to put their side of the story. Shot/injected immediately, no questions asked.

AhNowTed · 09/04/2023 20:45

These dogs needs to be banned.

If people are so fucking stupid to keep these dogs, them we need to step in with legislation.

Dog licences

This, I really wish that something would be done to sort the responsible owners from the irresponsible.

SherbertDabs · 09/04/2023 20:47

I’ve got an American bulldog cross. Rescued from the rspca. Found emaciated, scarred and burnt. I have no kids and no kid visitors, my dog is only ever off lead in a private field and no strangers are allowed near him ever. I’m undoing the damage done by previous owners, spending thousands on training and diet. I’ve still been told I’m scum, a chav, thick, aggressive and my dog (and i?) need to be euthanised. I’d be happy to be taxed, have a license etc. Any sensible suggestions welcomed, the people spouting nonsense though can fuck off. It’s unhelpful on both sides of the coin.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 20:50

Should have been put to sleep. A damaged animal, abused by its owners which a charity was happy to palm off on someone else.

This idea that euthanising dogs is just the worst thing ever and must never ever be done is just madness. It's sentimental and ridiculous.

Jonei · 09/04/2023 20:50

A sensible suggestion is to ban these types of dogs altogether.

Yes.

You're talking statistics, not me.

I am referring to the culture around the two. As I keep on banging on here and in other threads, as a society we are quite happy - once the thoughts and prayers have run out - to carry on as before.

And in that respect we are exactly like Americans and their guns.

No, not all, obviously. I'm not an idiot. But enough to make sure nothing will change.

I know this, because in (say) 30 years, if it was going to change, it would have by now.

Come back to me when there has been a cross party emergency legislation review and a comprehensively funded plan to solve the problem. By any means necessary.

shadowchancesassy · 09/04/2023 20:52

@Wishihadanalgorithm you've kind of contradicted yourself there by saying your a dog lover. Aren't dog lovers a lover of all dogs?

To those saying drug dealers and scum own this breed of dog your wrong. I know a lady that breeds pocket bully's and she posted a picture on insta of a lady who had purchased a pup and i even commented that I bet she was shocked when approached by the buyer. She was in 50s and quite posh from Warwick.
The dog trainer I know trains an xl and the owner is a single lady in her 40s who's a lawyer.

Some people just like big/giant breeds and some like toy breeds everyone's different I suppose.

I'm at a holiday park in the uk atm, the amount of dogs here is unreal. Most of them just little ones but there are some absolutely massive dogs too, on lead but also the long leads, it just makes me so nervous having two little kids

Last year at a holiday park , my son was playing football in a park. This woman walked through with a French bull dog on a long lead. The dog lunged at my son and scrammed his legs badly as he was in shorts. He was so upset and frightened. She didn’t even come over until I called her. She said oh he’s a puppy he’s playing. I said that it’s not acceptable for her to bring dogs through a busy park with toddlers in when she clearly has no control over her dog. If it has been a toddler, the dog would have been face level. It’s disgusting. She then sent her husband and son over to stand by us when I was calming my son and wiping the blood from his leg. I think they were listening to see if I would report them. I wish I had tbh.

Suzi888 · 09/04/2023 18:44

@TropicalTheIslandBreeze you want to ban dogs entirely?

In a previous comment she said she thinks people like dogs because of the media brainwashing.
Nothing to do with the fact that the relationship with dog and humans can be dated back over 30,000 years...wolves and humans learnt to coexist and benefit from each other in many ways for a lot longer than the media has been around.

KnittingNeedles · 09/04/2023 20:56

I would also like to see a ban on those extendable leads which allow a dog to be 15 or 20 feet from its owner.

Jonei · 09/04/2023 20:57

Aren't dog lovers a lover of all dogs?

I like tigers. Doesn't mean my neighbour should own one and walk it down the street on a lead.

ElmTree22 · 09/04/2023 20:57

Suzi888 · 09/04/2023 18:50

“No they aren't. They are wild animals. “ Which humans chose to domesticate. Human fuckery… again. Not happy unless meddling.

In fact, I see a common theme, we’re the bloody problem.

Exactly! This is an important point. We are alway the route of the issue, we just like to point fingers. "Oh my god look how horrific this dog breed is, that we bred, for this specific job" 🙄

AgapanthusandAcers · 09/04/2023 20:58

I think there are some breeds that simply should not be allowed as domestic pets. A dog breed that was bred to defend livestock etc is going to be a powerful and potentially aggressive dog.
I know all dogs have the ability to be aggressive with poor training and a bad owner but the people who have these dogs want them for status and the fact they look threatening.
There is simply no need for these types of dogs in your average home and banning them would go a long way to improving the situation. I have had a dog in the past, a placid Labrador before I get accused of being anti dog.

Jonei · 09/04/2023 20:59

And when it's noticed a particular breed is a big fuck up mistake and not safe to live amongst humans, then time to deal with that problem by not breeding / owning them any more.

Those leads, I can't tell you how many times a dog has attacked mine while on one of those.
They teach your dog absolutely nothing other than it can do whatever the f**k it wants!

Disgusting for not wanting people to own breeds of dog that are a huge risk to other people?

Yeah, how very disgusting that is. 🙄

Thousands???!!!??? Clearly more money than sense. Thousands of pounds. On a dog. One dog. Kindest thing would be to euthanise it. You can not guarantee that it won't get someone when you let it off leash. Why on earth would you not just get a normal dog? Or put that money towards a human child who could really do with it?
