@PassTheDuckie If dogs are banned? Do you actually hear yourself?

And your solution is?

EyesOnThePies · 09/04/2023 19:37

Look at the list of fatal dog attacks here, and the breeds responsible in the 2010-19 and 2020-now lists.

As far as I know there aren’t even huge numbers of these ‘bully’ dogs, compared to spaniels, French bulldogs, labradors etc. And look how many of the dogs in the list were bred to guard / attack.

This happened to a friends daughter in the US. They sued the dog owner and got $50k which was used for plastic surgery on her daughters face until she was 10 to correct the scarring and disfigurement.

I wonder if this is possible in the U.K.?

If you can prove the chain of causation was not affected then yes you can. The difficulty with doing it straight away is that traumatic psychological problems take a while to manifest. I think thankfully this baby (may) be too young but if you sue straight away and settle in full and final settlement for £50k for plastic surgery say, and the. 5 years later the child starts suffering horrific PTSD needing psychiatric intervention and inpatient treatment at £6000 per week, then you’re buggered. That’s why you have the longer limitation period.

So as long as attacks stay at that level, we are - as a society - fairly comfortable with them.

Thoughts and prayers, obviously.

But do anything ? Don't be silly

Oh look, that's exactly how I thought the dog would look.

I saw an XL Bully for the first time yesterday. It's thick owners could barely control it and it could jump to adult waist height. For the first time in my life I thought an animal should be put down. It was an evil thing. Had a horrible bark too.

Ricco12 · 09/04/2023 19:52

When my son was in plastics getting a head wound stitched up there was a young child of 2 years old with a similar bite to the face as the photo.
Prob slightly worse than the one in the photo as the child has been bitten badly on both sides of her face. It was horrific.

The family Labrador had done it.

Dogs and under 5 year old kids aren't a great mix, no matter the breed. Parents need to realise this and think twice about having dogs with under 5's.

If they do have them then they should be gated away at all times from the child.

AlwaysGinPlease · 09/04/2023 19:55

@DuesExMachina I would like a stop to the breeding of dogs by nasty backyard lazy vermin and stop fucking idiots owning any dogs. These dogs are never looked after properly, nearly always victims of cruelty and neglect. Leaving the mother far too early. Kept in tiny houses usually by chavs. Not walked and not fed properly. No medical care.

They let their children crawl or jump all over them and expect them to put up with it.
How often do you hear idiot parents saying oh Spot is so good with the children, they let them pull him about. You cannot expect an animal treated like that to behave normally. You just cannot. I adore all animals and have a few dogs, have always had them.

But ...some dogs cannot be around humans especially children and are better off put to sleep than live a life of being passed around various morons until they can take no more. I would rather a dog be put to sleep than suffer or indeed attack and kill babies/children.

But to state all dogs should be banned as has been said here and in the MANY dog hating threads on MN, just makes the poster sound ridiculous because they are.

It will never happen of course and neither should it , any more than banning cars would.

Humans are to blame. Simple.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/04/2023 19:56

It’s so sad if you are the poor family next door to such dogs- it’s my worst nightmare, to be a prisoner in your own home thanks to someone else’s dangerous choices.

I am not at all comfortable about any pet ownership that results in death and significant injury. Or domestic ownership of animals bred to guard and attack.

BarbieCar · 09/04/2023 20:04

Shame we can't euthanise the owners too. But yes, failing that, charge them as if they had used a deadly weapon themselves.

The amount of dogs and dog poo has exploded in my area (no pun intended). A nice area. It's revolting. I hate irresponsible dog owners.

Same as they said about banning smoking. Or people going vegan. Or, very likely, slavery.

Op you're just ridiculous.

jimmyhill · 09/04/2023 20:12

Time to start "destroying" the owners as well as the dogs. Attacks would stop overnight

Op you're just ridiculous.

Why?

What's your solution?

We're remarkably comfortable with dead and injured kids.

Dogs, cars, pollution, all killers yet try and control them and people yack on about their "freedom" and things being "woke".

icanneverthinkofnc · 09/04/2023 20:15

I know a number of people with American bullies.. only one is what could be described as a model owner.. They spend huge amount of time on training and a small fortune on their dog.
I have an x breed thats' main breed isn't on any list but quite often mentioned on here as undesirable. Our DGC came to visit recently, I put her behind a gate, she could easily jump it but knows she has to stay there..three excitable children and an excitable dog are not a good mix..I make sure she isn't put in the position that could go wrong. I'm currently away on a break with her, I've had many compliments about her behaviour and training. I'd be quite happy to do mandatory training as I'm a responsible owner, we all know the irresponsible owners will avoid any legislation, the police won't act, they long gave up with preventing crime and barely respond to commited crimes.

The arrogance of believing your training can outdo dog breed dna is outstanding. You’re merely lucky that your dog hasn’t attacked. Yet. And maybe it won’t. But why gamble. You’re like so many other x breed dog owners who thought they could control their dogs, when ultimately, the dog went dog.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64798162.amp

Those are only the ones that get reported. Many thousands don’t. “Just a nip”. “Didn’t break the skin”. “Didn’t mean to do it, just have been provoked”. “Doesn’t normally bite, has a tumour “ etc.

@PassTheDuckie what are you ask? About 12 judging by that response.

@DuesExMachina Don't ask me twice because you're too lazy to read my solution.

Dear frothers , dogs will not be banned. Now stop ranting and think of solutions not daft ideas.

ElmTree22 · 09/04/2023 17:46

It's not the dogs it's unfortunately the type of people who own them!

Is it bollocks. You don't hear about people being mauled to death by a Yorkshire Terrier or a Chihuahua.

There are certain breeds of dogs which are very strong, very powerful and bred to be intimidating. And certain groups of people who want people to think they are "hard" choose to get those powerful, aggressive dogs.

It absolutely IS the dogs, which are bred to be barky and bitey and snarly and horrid, but it is also the people who choose to own them.

I have no idea what can be done to deal with the explosion of badly behaved dogs in the UK but something needs to be done. A start would be people stopping with the "no bad dogs only bad owners" nonsense.

I'm not arrogant..I spend time training, I remove/ avoid risks as they arise, I don't put my dog in the position of making mistakes..she is a dog after all...the vast majority of dogs do not attack, bite or show any threat. Yes, I agree the attacks are horrific but knee jerk reaction doesn't work. The type of owners who are involved in the majority of these attacks wouldn't abide by or would circumvent rules.
