Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

Have you been to children's A+E departments with the murals on there?

Hopefully those screens are not used on hospital wards for teenagers? The BBC article says the Dover intake unit was set up for 'unaccompanied child migrants' - how many unaccompanied children under 12 do they receive?

Oh dear. No, I don't believe everything I read, but this has been covered widely, along with Jenrick trying to keep it quiet. It's been confirmed by officials that the mural has now been painted over.

If you want to believe that every single thing in the papers is a lie, then that's your lookout.

That's a rather sweeping statement, and pretty ignorant as well.

Meh, if it was genuinely the argument that the artwork was too young for the unaccompanied minors they'd have suggested teen appropriate art

My post was an observation - not an argument.

@Thebestwaytoscareatory on the other hand it's good to see that this story has got them running so scared they've sent representation.

😂😂😂

Would you be annoyed if they used pop stars, teenage references, film references?

Or is it the idea of anything to make unaccompanied children feel welcome that make "you" feel uncomfortable?

Did you watch Evacuation by the way? You could see the trauma that the people were going through to leave - and those were the ones who were able to escape with the military. Not the ones who have travelled across 1000s of miles to flee.

What would you like to see on the walls?
What do you think teenagers would enjoy and would help create a more welcoming environment?
That is what you are concerned about yes?

At least Arthur didn't offer to paint Goofy for them.
Or the Nachzehre
(Obscure Cabin Pressure reference there)

You were already high in my estimations but you have gone even higher. Thank god the paintings weren't "slightly off"

This is an appalling decision and deliberate nastiness from Jenrick.

Eveninginparis · 08/07/2023 10:39

What I'd like to know is, "where is the outcry from the original artist that did these murals?

If I'd spent hours doing artwork and then someone decided it should be painted over I'd be as mad as your a*.

So far there is a stony silence.🤔

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 10:39

I would love to see Jenrick say that he felt that Disney murals were not age appropriate and then argue when asked what welcoming pictures could be put up there to make the children feel safe and to see his arguments for that.

This is so ripe for parody

Not someone. Robert Jenrick. Do keep up.

That dept caters for children of all ages.

That was the point of the post

Will traumatise children

I mean obviously it doesn’t matter

that particular MPs reasoning (accordingly to the press) is that it was

‘too welcoming’

if he had said it wasn’t age appropriate or could traumatise the children this would be a different thread

What would you like to see on the walls?

Something more appropriate than Mickey Mouse for mostly 16/17 year olds.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 10:51

The majority are aged between 14 and 17 years of age but we do work with younger children.

Glad we agree the environment should be made welcoming.

So you're not opposed to painting something on the wall to welcome teenagers?

It's quoted in the press that Jenrick felt they were too welcoming.

I take it then you feel that his reasoning is wrong and you think that it is ok to try to make these centres welcoming?

Does that make it true ??

I wonder why?

If it’s not true why hasn’t the Home Office and specifically Jenrick denied it? He’s getting stick all over the mainstream and social media - surely if it wasn’t true he’d just say so.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/07/2023 10:58

Plenty of fully grown adult women are fans of Disney and get on Eurostar wearing mouse ears. Age vs choice of characters isn’t relevant.

I think it's often good to wait when stories break - just to see what truth there is.

However, this story has been out for a while - and it's in all the papers and apparently the Home Office has confirmed it.

Not that it's in one of their press releases.

I wonder if it will come up in Parliament at all.

ToWhitToWhoo · 08/07/2023 11:02

Robert Jenrick didn't say that the murals were age-inappropriate or culturally inappropriate or scary; he said that they made the place look too welcoming. The important thing in this story isn't so much the murals themselves as the nasty attitude to child asylum seekers.

And if this were 'fake news', surely the government would have quickly pointed this out.
