Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

@Eveninginparis as the only person on this thread to suggest that this is fake, may I suggest you travel down there and ask the staff? That would be helpful.

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i suspect that your post may end up deleted by an unknown delicate but that was an excellent velocity quip.

@Thebestwaytoscareatory on the other hand it's good to see that this story has got them running so scared they've sent representation.

I don’t think speculation of CHQ involvement is unwarranted but the truth is that there are actual people who hold these opinions.

If nothing else I wouldn’t be airing them for free when I know that there’s a wage to made Grin

The BBC article says this;
The Home Office said the Kent Intake Unit (KIU) opened last November to look after unaccompanied child migrants.

Elsewhere, the government say this;
The majority of unaccompanied children who claimed asylum in the UK in 2022 were aged 16 or 17 years.

Why would a 16 year old child want to be greeted by Mickey Mouse in any case?

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 10:14

I can imagine a whiteboard and people being asked to throw up reasons why they painted over this mural.

Did anyone watch Evacuation recently? It was on Channel 4 and showed the evacuation from Kabul through the eyes of the military who were there and the people, including children who escaped.

I do wonder if Jenrick and other such Ministers watched it and what they thought? You could see the desparation of people fleeing the regime and the hell they would go through to escape.

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 10:15

I bet that example got put on the whiteboard as well.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 10:16

A majority. Not all.
Poor excuse for paying extra to paint over existing artwork.

Have you been to children's A+E departments with the murals on there?

Why would a 16 year old child want to be greeted by Mickey Mouse in any case?

is it a case of ‘wanting something’ or is it communicating that they’re in an environment that’s not threatening?

Well I am a lot older than that but I much prefer to be greeted by something cheerful and nice than plain white walls. It’s about the whole ethos of how somewhere will appear isn’t it.

and even if most are 16 and 17 that doesn’t mean all are and there will be much younger people coming through.

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 10:24

At least Arthur didn't offer to paint Goofy for them.

Maybe they should paint some XBox characters, film stars, pop bands....

Smiley faces.

Would that be ok for people on here?

Ah, so that is the new angle! A slight improvement on eveninginparis, but still very poor. Back to the whiteboard I think.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 10:27

Meh, if it was genuinely the argument that the artwork was too young for the unaccompanied minors they'd have suggested teen appropriate art.

Really what they want is what Jenrick said they wanted - a less welcoming environment.

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 10:28

For anyone who knows Rosie Holt, this would be a perfect sketch for her.
Being interviewed as to why they painted over the murals.

All the answers are on here for her.

Nice to see that thread is back in Active. Good work.
