Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

🙄

Try this https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/population_density/Europe/

OK to be fair, Monaco, Gibraltar, Malta and San Marino are more densely populated, but I can't find any stats for how many refugees etc they are taking in, so maybe you can help me there?

pointythings · 11/07/2023 19:29

@Eveninginparis and that link is relevant to your complete lack of understanding of the Netherlands as a country because....?

DuncinToffee · 11/07/2023 19:30

'open door policy', is that the same as falsely claiming that 100 million refugees are coming here?

As for Holland and the Netherlands Grin

What are you taking about ??🤔

If you don't agree with what information was listed on that site, then speak to the compilers and don't throw brickbats at me !

cakeorwine · 11/07/2023 19:35

I don't give a flying fig how many refugees etc other countries are taking in

Someone else's problem, eh......

Meanwhile. in Europe

By the end of 2022, Europe, including Türkiye, hosted more than one-third (36 per cent) of all refugees (see figure 7). The number of refugees in European countries rose from 7 million at the end of 2021 to 12.4 million at the end of 2022 as millions of refugees from Ukraine sought refuge in nearby countries. Türkiye remained the largest refugee-hosting country in the world, with 3.6 million refugees at end-2022, over 10 per cent of all refugees. Germany hosted nearly 2.1 million, 6 per cent of all refugees globally

But hey let's not forget the UK

Between 2015 and 2022, we have offered places to almost half a million (481,804) people seeking safety. This includes:

  • 44,659 family reunion grants since 2015
  • 233,770 people under Ukraine Scheme visas, of which at least 154,500 have arrived in the UK
  • 153,708 BN(O) status holders and their family members, of which 105,200 have arrived in the UK
  • 49,667 vulnerable people and children as part of Afghan resettlement and relocation, the Syrian Resettlement programme and other resettlement programmes (e.g. UK Resettlement scheme, which has resettled 2,023 since its launch in 2021)

So most people have come via the Ukraine scheme or via the British National Overseas scheme.

Not many have come via the safe and legal routes, have they?

43,000 people compared to the 107,000,000 displaced people in the world and the 35.000,000 refugees there are in the world.

I never said that, so please don't put words in my mouth.

As for Holland and the Netherlands

Would you rather I called them The Low Countries, or* *"Koninkrijk der Nederlanden," or Kingdom of the Netherlands?
I'm not sure what your problem is with these countries ?

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 19:37

I'm not arguing with you.

cakeorwine · 11/07/2023 19:38

The question is - are we doing "our bit" or could we be doing more?

Turkiye has 3,000,000 refugees.

We are looking at 43,000 per year.

There are 35,000,000 refugees - of whom most do stay in camps near their home country.

A tiny tiny tiny fraction try to come here.

Clavinova · 11/07/2023 19:39

the Netherlands

On topic - the Dutch government has just collapsed;

The Dutch government has collapsed after failing to reach a conclusion on controlling high immigration rates.

The four-party coalition government was unable to reach a consensus on talks about asylum policies that were led by prime minister Mark Rutte on Friday.

Mr Rutte’s party has in the past year been working towards reducing the flow of asylum seekers due to the issue of overcrowded migration centres...

Last year, hundreds of asylum seekers were forced to sleep outdoors in squalid conditions near an overcrowded reception centre as the number of people arriving in the Netherlands outstripped the available beds...

The numbers have put a strain on housing that already was in short supply in the densely populated country.

A lesson to learn there, don't pander to the far right

That's a question.

But when we have 35 million refugees in the world, 108 million displaced people, it's only right that the world should take a look at that and see what can be done.

At the moment, most refugees stay in camps near where they flee from.

It seems that we don't provide many safe routes and the Government wants people who do try to get in to the UK via boats to be deported to Rwanda without any appeal.

Should people stay in the camps forever?

pointythings · 11/07/2023 19:45

Fail to plan, plan to fail - that is why Rutte's government fell. It's no coincidence that this was another right wing government choosing not to deal with the twin issues of housing shortages and global instability causing an increase in refugee movement. This is what the likes of the VVD do, it's their operating model. They could have made different choices.

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 19:47

@DuncinToffee A lesson to learn there, don't pander to the far right

No, don't pander to the far left who want to invite the world and his dog.

SingingNettles · 11/07/2023 19:48

Couldn’t they just resettle some of the refugees from the Netherlands to Holland?

jgw1 · 11/07/2023 19:49

We don't have the room

There are 1/4 million empty homes in the UK and 3/4 million 2nd homes, so certainly there is enough housing to take far more refugees.

Equally if the richest in society, one could use Sunak as an example, paid the same proportion of their income as tax as a nurse did, the infrastructure would be far better.

But hey lets blame migrants instead.

jgw1 · 11/07/2023 19:51

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 19:15

No it doesn't.
I don't give a flying fig how many refugees etc other countries are taking in.

We are the third most densely populated country in Europe (first is Holland, then Netherlands)

We don't have the room or the infrastructure to do any more than what we are already doing at the moment.

It always amuses me that those people who want an 'open door' policy for refugees/migrants etc are the first to complain when they can't get their kids in the school of their choice/can't get a doctor's appointment, roads are snarled up with traffic, there is a food shortage etc etc

Oh good, we are back to the argument that Antartica does not take its fair share of migrants because population density. Joyous.

😂😂😂😂

@Eveninginparis still not admitting that you got some basic geography wrong because you couldn't be bothered to check your source material?

BTW the Low Countries haven't existed since Belgium gained its independence in 1839.

SingingNettles · 11/07/2023 19:53

The Dutch government was a coalition between four parties, ranging from centrist to right wing.

Eveninginparis · 11/07/2023 19:53

@cakeorwine But when we have 35 million refugees in the world, 108 million displaced people, it's only right that the world should take a look at that and see what can be done.

Why?

It is a duty of a government to protect it's citizens. If they can't do that than why is it the responsibility of other to do that?

Look what happened when Tony Blair (acting as Bush's poodle) decided he was going to save the people of Iraq. They went in mob-handed, blew most of the country to $h!£-rags and destabilised the entire Middle East.

Could we resettle some of the refugees to 1839 for Jacob and his nanny to look after?

Nobody is talking about an 'open door system' Safe and legal routes means controlled immigration.

pointythings · 11/07/2023 19:56

@SingingNettles technically D66 is slightly left of centre, but yes. Interestingly the ChristenUnie (who are very right wing on most things and close their website down on Sundays because they are Christian extremists) sided with D66 because Matthew 25:35. I have little time for them, but at least they are practising what they preach.
