Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

He allegedly got away with all sorts in housing. Nasty piece of work.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 08/07/2023 13:37

None other than Nigel Farridge has managed to squeeze out a drop of the milk of human kindness by condemning Jenprick’s actions today, which should tell even the most cold-hearted Tory supporters something. But it probably won’t.

Has he? All I can see is him going on about banks

Sorry, x post.

Wow to Farage

As Yes Prime Minister would say "Painting over murals is a courageous decision"

Clavinova · 08/07/2023 13:58

So if it was "Felt to be too welcoming" - would you be on board with that or is that a step too far?

How many cartoon murals were there? Other sources mention; 'Winnie the Pooh' and 'Baloo from The Jungle Book' as well. How many young children used the room? And what did the 'welcome signs with colourful branding' look like? It would seem a bit odd to have 'Welcome to Dover' signs up if official government policy is to 'Stop the Boats'.

I liked the flower mural in the outside space - is that still there?

The only facts I know are that there was a mural in this room, described as a family holding room, and that the Home Office has confirmed it has been painted over.

Neither do I, since the BBC report says this (no mention of families);

A spokesperson confirmed the murals were removed on Tuesday, adding: "We do all we can to ensure children are safe, secure and supported as we urgently seek placements with a local authority.
"All children receive a welfare interview on their arrival at accommodation, which includes questions designed to identify potential indicators of trafficking or safeguarding issues.

@Clavinova I was worried I had not seen you around recently, especially after the mutiny. Its good to know you are still here and still arguing on the side of the cruel and inhumane.

There really doesn't seem to be any argument for repainting and new signage.

May I be so bold as to suggest one very strong argument.

But Jeremy Corbyn

So is that a yes or a no?

The reasoning is it made the place too welcoming.

You have posted a lot on this thread and you seem to think that the murals are not age appropriate.

Jenrick has allegedly said that.
Farage has said that "it's a bit mean"

Would you have prefered that Winnie and Baloo had been replaced by 'stop the boats' or 'you are not welcome here'?

I am still waiting for her opinion on lying to parliament... Something Jenrick is quite familiar with

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 14:09

Maybe some images from films where young people were made not to feel welcome?

John Snow from The Hunger Games?
The child catcher?

myrtleWilson · 08/07/2023 14:17

Jenrick : "On reflection, the decision to paint over the murals was too harsh and in recognition of my own poor judgement regarding this, I'm rolling up my sleeves and getting out my paints and brushes and am going to paint a new mural myself"

myrtleWilson · 08/07/2023 14:18

Jenrick : "See, this is how I'll welcome these poor children"

What a complete twat.
Not given to such simplistic comments ... but this just beggars belief.

Not at all - I haven't said I agree with the Rwanda policy and I wouldn't want Spain's interior minister;

But you do agree with painting over the murals?

CampsieGlamper · 08/07/2023 14:23

Cost of obtaining the right to use copyright images? A nursery near us used images of Disney and Hanna Barbara (at that time) and were surprised to get a "cease and desist" from the owners lawyers.

I am not sure what @Clavinova thinks of this.

Even Farage has said "It's a bit mean"

You've mentioned something about the age of the chilldren and is it suitable?

Do you agree with Farage that if the reason that the murals were painted over because Jenrick wanted it to be less welcoming, then that's a bit mean?

If only Jenrick had thought of that excuse.....
