Who told workers at an immigration centre to paint over colourful artwork of cartoon characters in an immigration centre accepting children because it was too "welcoming".

It takes a very special kind of arsehole to begrudge cartoon characters on walls at a centre for misplaced and vulnerable people. If you don’t like the insults take a long hard look at your views. Shameful

Because I have a right to an opinion like anyone else.

If your opinion is that the picture is not from the KIU, then you may need to adjust your opinion when facts are presented to you.

To be disgusted at the petty minded cruelty of Robert Jenrick?

You are mistaken.

We already have country-specific routes in place.

Between 2015 and 2022, we have offered places to almost half a million (481,804) people seeking safety. This includes:

  • 44,659 family reunion grants since 2015
  • 233,770 people under Ukraine Scheme visas, of which at least 154,500 have arrived in the UK
  • 153,708 BN(O) status holders and their family members, of which 105,200 have arrived in the UK
  • 49,667 vulnerable people and children as part of Afghan resettlement and relocation, the Syrian Resettlement programme and other resettlement programmes (e.g. UK Resettlement scheme, which has resettled 2,023 since its launch in 2021)
The UK is one of the largest recipients of UNHCR referred refugees globally, second only to Sweden in Europe since 2015.

The top nationalities on resettlement routes from 2015 to 2022 include people from Syria, Iraq, Sudan and Somalia.
The top nationalities who have come to the UK through the Family Reunion route from 2015 to 2022 include people from Syria, Eritrea, Iran, Sudan and Pakistan.

There is also an agreement in place with Hong Kong.

Please stop spreading ill-informed, inflammatory, emotive misinformation.

So how does that fit with the increase in people travelling to the UK in boats specifically from 28k in 2021 to 45k in 2022? Or that asylum claims have doubled in two years to 144k? Or that of the people who have managed to get a decision 61% had their claim for refugee status approved?

At this point you seem to be of the opinion that’s absolutely fine and dandy. And that poor old Jenrick is being bullied by multiple media outlets (don’t worry though, the DM isn’t joining in. They’re completely silent on the subject so far. Probably the telegraph too).

Maybe you should read the report

I read some of the report earlier. Maybe Stephen Kinnock and the BBC should read the report and get their facts straight.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 12:15

No Jenrick supporter has been able to provide substantive argument as to why the artwork needed to be painted over.

Or the media in general

But that is a distraction.

I am curious to your views.

This is about a mural being painted over because "it's been reported that Jenrick felt it was too welcoming"

The only facts I know are that there was a mural in this room, described as a family holding room, and that the Home Office has confirmed it has been painted over.

I don't know why it was done.

However - I would have hoped that the argument that it was felt to be age inappropriate would be something that the Home Office would have tried to use and to get out there rather than it was felt to be too welcoming.

Unless they are happy with that version of events?

Would you be happy with the "too welcoming" story?
Or does that make you feel uncomfortable?

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 12:19

"We painted the Disney murals over and replaced them with pop stars, teenage imagery and interesting colours to make it more age appropriate for the unaccompanied children arriving after their journey"

or

"We painted over the Disney murals because we felt it was too welcoming"

Which story would you like to be associated with?

No Jenrick supporter has been able to provide substantive argument as to why the artwork needed to be painted over.

the most I’ve gleaned is that ‘it’s not true’ and then a lot of waffle attempts to distract from the story (that isn’t true).

Neither do I, since the BBC report says this (no mention of families);

A spokesperson confirmed the murals were removed on Tuesday, adding: "We do all we can to ensure children are safe, secure and supported as we urgently seek placements with a local authority.
"All children receive a welfare interview on their arrival at accommodation, which includes questions designed to identify potential indicators of trafficking or safeguarding issues.

Not by hurling insults for a start.

I haven’t insulted you, I have, however, derided an opinion you shared.

I meant to copy this as well
I don't know why it was done.

Neither do I...

Distracting again

We do know that the murals were painted over.

Reason in the press:

"Felt to be too welcoming"

I wonder where the Daily Mail and other outlets got this spin from?

I have no doubt that some people will be on board with this argument - but I bet that many decent people won't be.

So if it was "Felt to be too welcoming" - would you be on board with that or is that a step too far?

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2023 12:27

Home Office have had 4 days to deny that Jenrick said it was too welcoming.

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 12:33

I am sure it would be a simple question to come up at Home Office questions or on the Home Office Select Committee.

Why was the mural at the Kent Intake Unit painted over?

Or there are reports that the mural was painted over because it was felt too be too welcoming?

Or

Do you plan to replace the mural to make the centre more welcoming ?

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 12:39

At least this is a simple thread to answer and debate without much need for distraction or whataboutery.

There was a Disney mural at the Kent Intake Unit.
It has been painted over.
Press reports say that Jenrick felt it was too welcoming.
These reports haven't been denied for several days.

Thank you @Eveninginparis for keeping this thread in Active and for valuable insight into the mind of what's left of the Tory support base in 2023:
He was right but for the wrong reasons.
It probably didn't happen.
Kids don't like cartoons.

The denial is strong.🫣

@HRTQueen even the comments on the DM site are mainly of disgust

That's interesting when usually MN posters are pillorying the DM as a rubbish paper?

I wonder what's caused the changed of heart?

I don’t believe there is a change of heart towards the DM as a whole

the point being that even DM readers (often openly racist) are disgusted by Jenricks comments

I can't believe someone would say it's not from the unit when the actual picture is from an official report into the unit.

Do people not know how the internet works? It took me a few minutes to find the report and to read about the conditions in the units.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/07/2023 12:59

From today's i newspaper.
Mr Sunak's spokesman suggested the decision designed to "deter" asylum seekers from crossing the Channel as part of the Prime Minister's promise to "stop the boats".

Asked whether painting over murals would deter asylum seekers he replied: "We do want to deter people from making these crossings"

One former child refugee said the order was "an act of abject cruelty.

So there you have it folks. PM Sunak agrees with Jenrick's petty minded cruelty to children. And his "plan" to stop the boats is to paint over artwork for children at the expense of the tax payers.

You couldn't make this shit up.

OP posts:
cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 13:03

A question at PMQs

"Does the Prime Minister agree with me that murals at the KIU are too welcoming and we should make every effort to deter people from crossing by making the centres less welcoming by, for example, painting over murals? Does he also agree that we should remove toys and games and that we should also paint over the pictures at Manston?"

Sunak "Blah blah, Labour, 5 pledges"

cakeorwine · 08/07/2023 13:06

I can so see Rosie Holt doing this.
Have any Ministers been on TV doing the media rounds on this?

For those who don't know, Rosie Holt parodies Tory MPs. The thing is, the parodies are often very realistic and on Twitter, people react as if she is a real MP
