No white eggs please

Sorry, this has nothing to do with racism, it's about eggs!

I love eggs and have one every morning for breakfast, I've just opened my latest shopping delivery eggs and I have been given a dozen white eggs instead of my usual brown. I don't like white eggs, I don't like the look of them, I don't like the taste of them, I just don't like them.

AIBU to put a note to the picker to only give me brown eggs in future?

As well as the stupidity of the click bait title how on earth could you possibly think there was a genuine difference in the taste of a yoke depending on the egg shell colour...

I mean honestly???

KimberleyClark · 22/08/2023 09:14

I agree that deep brown speckled eggs look more savoury and appetising somehow. But they don’t taste any different!

AgathaX · 22/08/2023 09:14

Stop buying your eggs from the supermarket. Go for free range eggs from a farm shop or good butcher. They'll be fresher, taste better, and the producer will be paid a decent price for them.

HorsePlatitudes · 22/08/2023 09:14

I only buy burford browns for this reason - orange yolks - delicious!

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2023 09:16

I bought Burford Browns after a thread on here and they tasted exactly the same as our normal eggs (M&S mixed free range) at a third of the price.

frustratednomad · 22/08/2023 09:16

Well, they say you eat with your eyes so maybe there's some truth in that. I just know I prefer brown eggs and I still think they taste different.

Have you ever had chickens OP? Shell colour does not determine yolk colour or egg flavour. The taste of true free range chicken eggs ie backyard chickens fed quality feeds and with a good sized range, not cooped all the time, is much better than any shop bought. Yolk colour can be improved through feeding cracked corn. Gives very bright yolks. But then again, true free range eggs are just better all round.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/08/2023 09:17

We buy all our eggs from a local farm - the eggs are mostly brown, though some are white. All have the same, amazingly orange yolks.

They're cheaper now than in Tesco, I've noticed.

Sn1859 · 22/08/2023 09:18

I love eggs. Would eat them every day. Our local small supermarket only has white eggs atm and they taste no different to brown eggs. They just look smaller to me.

GRex · 22/08/2023 09:19

I don't think white eggs taste different, but there are definitely nicer tasting eggs. We like the St Ewe Rich Yolk ones, very hard to come back from that to normal eggs though.

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 22/08/2023 09:20

Try duck eggs will change your mind on white shells

MindPalace · 22/08/2023 09:20

I find your title a bit distasteful re the joke about racism. Surprised myself as I thought I was not uptight but maybe I am. Maybe it was because I was having a depressing conversation at the time with my daughter (mixed race) about the racism still around today. And my black father in law faced the no whites thing for real. Anyway not funny in my book.

I don’t know anything about egg shell colour but haven’t noticed a difference myself.

BiIIie · 22/08/2023 09:20

Your opening line about racism wasn't needed! It shows what you were thinking when you added the title!

This is a stupid clickbait title.

Exactly my thoughts. Precious and clickbaity. 🙄 op even admits to knowing what she did.

frustratednomad · 22/08/2023 09:22

I used to get lovely brown eggs from a local lady who kept chickens but she lost all her ladies and never replaced them so I went back to shop eggs, I'm going to search around for another local egg seller, I'm sure there must be some around as I live rurally.

pontipinemum · 22/08/2023 09:22

I think it's just the breed of hen that determines the colour of the shell.

My ILs have their own hens, there are no nicer eggs. Brown ones from the supermarket don't compare even the most expensive ones.

Where did you buy them? I no longer live in the UK but I've never seen a white egg apart from on the TV in the USA.

Where I live it's often children that set it up as their own little business. My nephew did and we will probably help DS do it when he is older. So keep an eye out at the roadside

I don't see how it can be edited to avoid confusion when the OP did it on purpose. No confusion at our end and very much deliberate n the OPs... Hmm

Chasingsquirrels · 22/08/2023 09:26

You need eggs from hens with non-white ear lobes OP

SiobhanSharpe · 22/08/2023 09:27

We used to keep chickens and for us, the taste and colour of the yolks was far superior to shop bought eggs (of any colour shell.) The colour of our egg shells could vary from off white to a deep, speckled brown, from Maran hens. The yolk colour didn't really change.
Maran hens' eggs did look very attractive in a white egg-cup but the taste was the same. We fed our hens a mixed grain diet with quite a bit of corn (maize) in it.
I really miss having our own eggs, even ones fron farm shops etc are not as good.

FatOaf · 22/08/2023 09:27

Just make sure you pick free range

I buy white free-range eggs all the time.

Some people appear to think the difference between white and brown eggs is like the difference between white and brown bread or rice. It isn't. (And how do those people account for bluey-green eggs?)

The colour of the shell depends on the expression of pigment genes, which has nothing to do with the colour of the yolk or the taste of the egg. The OP's statement that "Brown eggs taste richer and the orange yolks look more appealing, white eggs yolks look pale and insipid and are tasteless" is just wrong.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, it was a stupid title.

I've been getting the eggs from Tesco, never had a problem before, perhaps they are still having trouble with suppliers due to bird flu. I live in a village and don't drive so have my shopping delivered.
