America's Gun Control

Gun violence, I really don't understand it, well i do, but the arguments "for" guns are very weak at best.

How is this still going on, why have they not tightened gun control similar to the UK and other countries.

My heart goes out to the people affected by the recent school shooting.

If everyone in the U.K. was allowed a gun I’d probably want one as well!

Justcallmebebes · 28/03/2023 16:10

Because the stock answer in the US to the gun problem is usually "we need more guns"

PoBaFla · 28/03/2023 16:19

I do remember a number of years ago, after yet another of these tragedies, Obama making a speech about how America is the ONLY developed western country in the world that has this school shooting problem.
He read out a big list of of all other comparable western countries that do not have this problem.
And still they didn't get it🤷🏼‍♀️

TomatoSandwiches · 28/03/2023 16:20

Yes.

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/03/2023 16:22

No they are no more stupid than your average nation. They just love guns more and people (esp women and children) less. A lot less.

Whoopsmahoot · 28/03/2023 16:22

Yes

HermioneWeasley · 28/03/2023 16:24

No, everyone in America is not stupid and the U.K. is not comparable because we’ve never had the scale of guns they have in the US. It seems impossible now that everyone has multiple guns to persuade responsible people to give theirs up. After all, the school shooters aren’t going to give up theirs so where do you start?

RudsyFarmer · 28/03/2023 16:26

The gun lobby are huge donators to political parties. It’s kind of like all our major parties being financed by KrispyKreme and someone suggesting we ban doughnuts. Never going to happen.

DojaPhat · 28/03/2023 16:30

Well the UK clearly has a kink for suffering given it keeps voting to be made materially worse off. But American gun culture is very hard for anyone outside to really comprehend. To them the 'right' to own a gun is something of a human right. The gun lobby is so strong that it has a complete chokehold. Gun culture isn't going anywhere anytime soon, it's going to be rinse repeat r.e. school shootings.

WeeOrcadian · 28/03/2023 16:30

I think that calling the majority of a (huge) country 'stupid' is ridiculous.

That said, I don't understand the appeal of guns. I don't consider people who DO like them, stupid though.

I do agree that countries that do not have such lenient gun laws, also do not have mass shootings.

Remember: guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 28/03/2023 16:30

I don't belive they are stupid I think a lot are purposely kept ignorant , if a society is ignorant then the people in power will keep being in power . They are also conditioned to fear . Including guns. If they fear their guns being taken away . The gun lobbies and companies will keep making profit as people will keep buying guns and the politicians will keep receiving the money from them to keep the fear going. Its a win win for them unfortunately children are collateral damage. I think theirs also some selfishness in the mix too.

Parker231 · 28/03/2023 16:31

No - they are not stupid but some people place great importance on the right to bare arms. This is their answer to personal safety. Unfortunately the NRA funds many Republics so no chance of anything changing

JustAnotherUsey · 28/03/2023 16:32

On holiday last summer I overheard some Americans talking about guns in US. Sounds like they feel like they need guns to protect them from others that have guns. So suppose it's a vicious cycle. If everyone has a gun then you are more fearful for your life and your home so feel you need that protection.

So only solution is a total gun ban. Probably haven't done it as it would cause a lot of trouble that no one wants to deal with.

Sarvanga38 · 28/03/2023 16:33

I couldn't actually believe it when I read yesterday that the Nashville shooting was the 128th mass this year, when we're not even a quarter of a way through the year.

I don't know what the answer is, but surely they have got to start trying to find it soon? 😥

DojaPhat · 28/03/2023 16:33

No - they are not stupid but some people place great importance on the right to bare arms.

Surely they can buy all the t-shirts they want if this is their desire.

thebear1 · 28/03/2023 16:34

Calling an entire nation an insult is pretty unpleasant. I completely disagree with guns and am shocked yet again that this happens. But putting it down to stupidity is over simplistic.

Sturnip · 28/03/2023 16:34

A majority of the American public want gun control.

Unfortunately, the Republican Party is bought and paid for by the pro-gun lobby, so meaningful change is near impossible.

route111 · 28/03/2023 16:35

The gun culture in the US is obviously awful, but YABU to suggest the majority of Americans are stupid. No more stupid rather people here. I'm not from the UK and I frequently, especially in recent years, find myself thinking most Britons are incredibly stupid, voting in the Tories for the past 13 years and believing whatever bulls..t they are fed by them, Brexit, Stop the Boats etc etc. Also most Britons are ignorant and poorly educated by international standards.

So…why did he do nothing to ban them then?

IslandMeat · 28/03/2023 16:35

Of course not all are stupid however there is a decent amount of people in the US where their education is limited and their media sources are heavily biased add to it some religious extremism and lack of mixing with other people so they don't hear unfiltered uncensored opinions. It's an echo chamber and it's beneficial to stick to group opinion.

This. Guns are the biggest cause of death in children in the US.

TheVanguardSix · 28/03/2023 16:37

No. The powerful lobbies like the NRA run shit In Washington. Watch Bowling for Columbine for insight into our gun culture. Old film but relevant to this day, sadly.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 28/03/2023 16:37

Why is it schools that are so often the target though? Why not shopping malls, or hospitals or I don't know - anywhere else where people congregate?

GrasstrackGirl · 28/03/2023 16:39

The trouble is if there were steps taken to ban guns there would be a civil war.

torquewench · 28/03/2023 16:39

One of my family members lives in the US.

He says the majority are stupid/rednecks.
