I don't know, but I see it here all the time - lovely hot weather and the tumble drier's churning away using up the electric. Come on people, the sun is FREE!

I admit I throw mine in for 10 minutes for a 'fluff' at the end of drying. But I don't iron so I figure it evens out!

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/07/2010 14:59

Yes, I agree with you mostly but hate crunchy socks and knickers so still use tumble drier for those, whatever the weather is up to.

ShinyAndNew · 09/07/2010 15:01

Crazy dog jumps up and steals any drying I hang out, which means it needs washing again. SO using the dryer is more economical.

I could train crazy dog not to steal the washing, but there is so much training he needs, washing stealing is way way down the list.

Colliecross · 09/07/2010 15:01

I love drying the washing for free, and in this weather wash everything - curtains, toys, clothes no one has worn.....

scaryteacher · 09/07/2010 15:01

Everything bar towels go on the line as I hate crunchy towels.

Docbunches · 09/07/2010 15:34

I agree - I don't even own a tumble drier, I've always hung stuff outside.

My washing machine has a drying facility which I use on very rare occasions if I need something quickly. In this weather, most of my washing takes only minutes to dry anyway.

Unlike most people, stiff towels, socks, etc don't bother me at all!

stressheaderic · 09/07/2010 15:37

I've never owned a tumble drier.

It all goes on the line in this weather, and drapes around the house damply on maidens and radiators in winter. Washing gets done much less often in my house in winter.

vintage · 09/07/2010 15:37

i always hang my clothes utside on a dry day but i put my towels in the tumble ryer for a wee while as i can`t stand them that cardboard way they get

vintage · 09/07/2010 15:39

i always to myself by the way at people sitting at their computers moaning about "bad for the enviroment" and doing this isn`t?

ttalloo · 09/07/2010 15:39

YANBU. I love hanging washing outside - it's free, it smells so much better, and doesn't waste valuable resources [comes over all po-faced].

My sister lives in a building in New York which has banned washing from being hung outside (because it's unsightly) so even though she has a garden, and it's more than 40 degrees there at the moment, she still has her tumble dryer running. I'm more militant than she is and would be marching outside with my wet laundry

iamfabregasted · 09/07/2010 15:46

Well I am jealous of you lot.

I currently have totally dripping washing on my washing line.

I am in Northern Ireland and it was absolutely chucking it down half an hour ago.

So thank your lucky stars the lot of you lol

fifitot · 09/07/2010 15:47

I quite like crunchy towels - good exfoliators when you get out of the shower!

Lauriefairycake · 09/07/2010 15:50

well I'm about to take 8 loads to the launderette (Miele catch gone on washing machine - new one not turned up yet) and I will be using the tumble to get at least half of it dry in the next day.

I'm not having it go off and smelly when I've got to pay to launder it

sure, some of it will be on the airer but there's 8 loads including sheets.

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/07/2010 15:54

I also like crunchy towels.

Using electricity is not so horrible for the environment. Iirc, only about 1/3 of UK's electricity is generated from coal.

I dry jeans and towels in the tumble dryer regardless of the weather.

moonstorm · 09/07/2010 18:32

I sort of agree BUT I have dreadful hayfever - drying outside makes my symptoms unbearable. So I suppose it depends why they are using it...

PeedOffWithNits · 09/07/2010 18:34

I agreee - i would never own a tumble drier and with a family of 5 there is always washing on the go

I know they are more efficient thesdays but they are still a luxury not a necessity in my opinion, and it is wasteful to use them all the time - and must cost a fair bit too

AuntieMaggie · 09/07/2010 18:36

same here as moonstorm!

gobsmackedetal · 09/07/2010 18:36

I use my tumble dryer and I live in the middle east. But then my roof is covered with solar panels, so electricity is free

bumpsoon · 09/07/2010 20:05

Bird Sh*t is the only reason i use my tumble dryer .

Nux · 09/07/2010 20:37

YADNBU it has been so hot today I have washed and dried 4 loads of washing by hanging in the back garden. No noise, no wasted energy and it smells nicer. No brainer!

Energyrethinking · 13/07/2010 10:28

Hello! Just want to share this fun fact:

Drying your clothes outside can save up to £15 a year on your energy bills.

Hanging clothes out to dry is free, weather permitting, and is just as effective as a tumble dryer.

In wet weather, always avoid putting clothes directly onto radiators. (Doing that reduces their ability to heat your home efficiently.) Instead, try hang washing indoors on a clothes horse.

titchy · 13/07/2010 10:34

£15 a year is a small price to pay for soft towels and bugger all ironing!

helmethead · 13/07/2010 10:36

Realised that crunchy clothes is probably a feature for those that live in very hard water areas. Went on holiday to a bit of the UK with soft water and coastal breezes and no crunchy clothes.

I do have to iron clothes lined dried more than if I get them from the dryer - am I saving energy + my time too.
