YABU - come live in Scotland. I've even had to put the heating on in the last couple of days it's so damn cold!

clippityclop · 24/07/2010 09:12

I used to use a rotary line but found I was often washing stuff twice because it would start raining while I was at work! Now I use a dryer except on sunny days when I'm home. It saves time, money, no damp clothes all over the place and no cardboard towels!

I tumble dry most of the washing (except on sunny days) as we've found since getting a tumble drier DD1's asthma has been MUCH better (no trips to A&E for nebs) due to the lower level of dust and damp.

Prior to the tumble drier I always had 3 clothes horses of washing lurking about in the living room and the house was really damp(used to have a dehumidifier running as well!). The amount of dusting has dropped too .

I know it's not great for the environment/my purse but neither is having to rush DD1 to local hospital every few weeks and then her having to be transfered to the big hospital by ambulance. DH then has to follow in car with DD2 & DD3, park the car in the £2 per hour car park (after paying for parking outside local hospital as well) and we all wait around for hours until Drs decide DD1 is well enough to go home. Costs upwards of £25 each time DD1 has an asthma attack just for petrol/parking let alone what the NHS's costs for nebs/ambulance/Drs & nurses time.

I figure the tumble drier is saving everyone money

In this weather??!! Try living in Lancashire... We've had serious flooding just down the road from us. July has been a wash-out for us.

TheBossofMe · 24/07/2010 09:56

Never had a tumble drier in my life. Only place that was a problem was in Seattle - rains sooooo much there that clothes used to go mouldy on the drying rack before they actually dried.

Otherwise, clothes dry on the line or an a drying rack. Haven't been through the worst of the monsoon season in Thailand yet though, so that might be a challenge!

MrsC2010 · 24/07/2010 09:57

I'd love a tumble dryer for towels (fluffier!) but am happy without one otherwise. I left mine in my flat which is now rented. We do have a heated hanging dryer thing that we were given this year which we'll use in the winter when needing to dry baby stuff quickly.

I don't miss not having one.

purpletrees · 24/07/2010 09:59

I don't agree.

Every item me and the kids own goes in the tumble dryer.

  1. No ironing, ever (irons use electricity as well).
  2. Fewer clothes purchased as can get them clean and dry v quickly so don't need much (saves money and resources).
  3. No rewashing due to bird poo etc (resources).
  4. No washing line/pegs owned.
  5. It has been raining every day for the last week here, in the July summer!
  6. Drying clothes indoors makes the air smell of whatever is in the washing liquid, even when you use unfragranced non bio. Making the indoor air damp can also make you have to redecorate ealier and also decrease the efficiency of the radiators heating the place.

Tumble dryers aren't evil or a waste of money IMO. Seriously a £15 saving a year not using a tumble dryer - I saved £hundreds on clothes I don't have to buy for each family member and myself as we all own so little cos I can get it washed and dried in about 75 minutes!

cheesypopfan · 24/07/2010 10:17

I wish we had a tumble dryer. Its been peeing it down all sodding week - three children, nowhere to put a decent washing line means huge backlog of washing.

Having said that....goinmg to invest in a laundry maid as cheaper than a dryer and my MIL swears by hers!!!

TheBossofMe · 24/07/2010 10:28

cheesy - laundry maids rock!

purple - I have to say in 20 years of doing my own laundry, I've never had a bird crap on my washing. Damp air esily solved by opening a window every now and again. Will admit to having a lot of clothes though - but that's because I like shopping

katiepotatie · 24/07/2010 10:30

Pissing down here, sorry tumble drier is on

BigWeeHag · 24/07/2010 10:34

I hate tumble dryers. I do have one, because I am in NI and last year it rained every single day for about 6 months straight. But clothes don't seem clean to me if they aren't line dried. I don't iron them, though, a good shake and well folded and they are slovenly fine.

YANBU - we've had a few days where it's poured with rain but I point blank refused to use my tumble dryer in July so I just hung it on the line anyway & left it out a few days!

2kids2dogsandahorse · 24/07/2010 12:19

£15 a year is well worth it the only thing that goes outside in this house is bedlinen cos I love crunchy sheets etc crunchy towels however are totally blah.

please excuse copious amounts of smileys which are going to appear over the next couple of days, I've only just discovered them and I love them lol

notagrannyyet · 24/07/2010 12:47

I do hang clothes out all year, but I tumble stuff all year as well. I always tumble dry underwear and socks. I really cba with hanging small stuff on the line, and I haven't got enough pegs. When DC were at primary I always tumbled the polo shirt so I didn't have to iron them. I do have an open coverd area outside so I hang heavy stuff like denim, towels etc. under there all year......It's sort of a carport but in the back garden IYSWIM. I find I do much more washing in the summer and one line is permanently full of cricket and tennis stuff. I only use the tumble drier 2/3 times a week in the summer, but probably every day in the winter......It's not me or DH it's all the school shirts and sports kit!

mamatomany · 24/07/2010 12:51

I rarely iron and if the washing goes outside and then it rains I have to rewash it, so any saving made not using a tumble drier is usually wasted by having to rerinse and spin it anyway.

hairytriangle · 24/07/2010 14:40

my tumble dryer is on right now as I have a pile upon pile type washing basket at present and I'm at work full time, and the weather is overcast and muggy and I have a party to go to later.

But to offset that I use environmentally friendly cleaning and personal care things, recycle and compost everything and drive a low emissions car. So I don't feel the slightest bit guilty.

Salbysea · 24/07/2010 14:51

YABU, the uniform policy where I work states that we should tumble dry our uniforms on hot for infection control reasons. I also am not supplied with enough uniforms to dry them any other way in between shifts, same for DH. Towels are horrible if they've not been finished off in the drier too

Numberfour · 24/07/2010 15:19

i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE drying clothes on the line. I ADORE crunchy towels! and tolerate crunchy knickers.

I only tolerate the dryer in winter because we live in a shoe box and drying clothes inside would mean we would have to eat, sleep and do everything else inside.

mizu · 24/07/2010 15:19

Crunchy knickers? Stiff towels? Where are you all living? I've never had a tumble dryer or central heating and I love drying stuff out on our TWO washing lines.
We have quite a long garden and a washing line down each side. And the washing is fine, not stiff at all.

We have been thinking of getting a tumble for the winter as we have to drive to the laundrette and do the drying there which is not environmentally friendly either. But am not keen really.

emptyshell · 24/07/2010 15:20

What's an iron? I've heard talk of these mythical things but I have a severe allergy to them.

xboxwife · 24/07/2010 15:51

I have a garden and very occasionally use my tumble dryer if something I or the dd's want to wear isn't dry yet.

This normally happens with bras, still waiting to fit into my pre baby bras and can't afford to buy new ones so keep having to constantly wash and dry my 1 fitting bra

LizzieMint73 · 24/07/2010 16:04

Am I the only one that finds it easier to hang outside? Nice day, washing out bring in later - job done. I always find stuff in the dryer ends up more creased and half of it ends up shrinking.
