If it only costs £15 a year I'll use it even more. Have no washing line outside and not allowed to put one up and I get sick of me smalls having over every radiator in the house.

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/07/2010 14:37

£15 a year - is that all!

That is really good. Yes it's nice to hang clothes outside when the weather is nice but it is a shit when you are at work all day, have hung some washing out in the morning and it starts raining and there is bugger all you can do about it.

I have had some towels out for 3 days now, I keep leaving them to dry and then it rains again. I will have to wash them again. I think that is more a waste of resource (electric & water) than just tumbling them in the first place.

Plus, I have had the jolly experience of a load of spiderlings nesting overnight in a pillowcase (shook it out hwen took the pillowcase off the line and got covered in 'em). And bird shit.

Tumble driers are a great invention.

bellavita · 23/07/2010 14:47

I love putting washing on the line and my next door neighbour must think I take in other peoples washing because I seem to do have so much of it.

However, I hate line dried towels when they go hard - so I shove them in the drier. I also put the boys school trousers in too as on the care label it does say for best results tumble dry - they come out perfect.

TheCrackFox · 23/07/2010 14:47

Do you only save £15 a year?

Might actually invest in a tumble dryer now as I was always under the impression I wouls be saving a ton of cash. 2 children and Scottish weather makes it quite difficult sometimes.

wordgirl · 23/07/2010 14:58

According to this it costs more than £15 a year

PrivetDancer · 23/07/2010 15:00

I've got my £15 'fact' and I'm sticking with it.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 23/07/2010 15:03

DH's parents haven't had a washing line as long as I've known them and always tumble dry. I think it's a real waste of money (if nothing else). However, they've now got a Brabrantia wall rotary dryer but it looks suspiciously pristine to me

We do have a dryer but I only use it sparingly as we have a clothes airer indoors and an airing cupboard. Obviously when it's sunny the clothes are outside. Plus the sun is amazing at getting food stains out of DD's clothes & nappies! The dryer is useful for bedding and DD's nappies in the winter, though and we chose to get another dryer when the old one broke.

Rocky12 · 23/07/2010 15:17

I would have thought that £15 is quite low savings wise. My DH HATES seeing the rotary line in the garden as he says it messes up the view!! Must be a man thing. I am certainly not going to stop using the hot weather to dry clothes. I find it very satisfying to see clothes drying in the sun

eStar · 23/07/2010 15:35

I have five children, a tiny yard and live in an area where people will steal anything from people's yards. I never even think about line drying anything, so much quicker and practical for me to use a dryer, as I can hardly keep up with it anyway.

BUT, in my 'fantasy list of things to do when the children are older' (and if we hopefully move house), watching our clothes drying naturally in the sun is in there. I especially like that it's one of the few household chores you can do while catching some rays

SanctiMoanyArse · 23/07/2010 15:41

Kinda agree with you but I will use occasionally in teh sun as my family is bigger than my lime will hold and I can't always keep up with it line drying

if your lilne is empty though adn you're not in a hurry to pack or anything then
YANBU

And the PC is on for DH's business so

I use my tumble drier all the time.
I do hang stuff out when its a dry day but personally I prefer to tumble.
It comes out soft, all it needs is a fold, and still smells of softener.
Line dried stuff goes stiff, has peg marks and just smells of outside

There are plenty of other things I could cut down my use of to save the environment rather than my tumble drier!

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/07/2010 16:17

To be honest I also think that the £15 a year figure is rogue.

Using Riven's figures, if you put the tumble drier on for an hour a day, it is still only £87 a year.

Worth it though I think, for me anyway.

Our electric bill isn't that high, there is nobody in all day and don't really have any other appliances which are a drain on electric (only have washing machine and fridge, kettle powered by gas, just laptops and telly and lights really).

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 23/07/2010 16:37

I use mine almost every day for about an hour. So around £75 a year. Well worth it!! Most of the stuff that comes out does not need ironing, so I save a bit there!!

skidoodly · 23/07/2010 16:38

I started off agreeing with the OP.

We have a tumble dryer and a washer/dryer and barely ever use either.

But no more crunchy knickers (never noticed this but now I want fluffy pants), saving time on hanging up, no ironing (even shirts? surely not) for only £15 a year?

Sign me up!

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/07/2010 16:41

I really hate towels and sheets which have been tumble dried. They are too soft.

How do people dry sheets in winter when it is pissing down if not using a tumble drier? I have tried to hang them over a clothes horse but it drags on the floor.

I own a tumble dryer (wedding present) but never use it. I feel the same way as OP about using it. Nearly all year round, mine go on the clothes line weather permitting, or else on the clothes horse in the utility room.

DanJARMouse · 23/07/2010 16:51

Couldnt be without my dryer!

Family of 5 living in the Scottish Highlands! We have had a handful of nice days, but more often than not it is raining!

Yesterday was a lovely day, had planned to get the washing done, but we tackled the gardening instead and because of the trees and bushes we were pulling down were right next to the washing line, the clothes would have been covered in bits! Today however we have put a few loads out on the line, with the towels and jeans in the tumble dryer.

I cant see how my tumble dryer costs anymore than having my computer running all day, or the TV on etc.

So three hours tumbling a week would only set me back £45 a year? Bargain! I can dry everything in sight then

ChocHobNob · 24/07/2010 08:52

YABU because I think since the 9th of July we've only had two days of no rain! lol
