to think that such a high profile media and police hunt for Raul Moat is dangerous

It worries me that he is gong to become increasingly desperate to evade the police and feel he has no way out and nothing to lose by harming more and more people.

He is obviously a dangerous man who needs to be found but surely it would be safer to just have a discreet but thorough police hunt for him.

I have visions of him taking hostages or a shoot out with police.

Is it true that the police have enlisted the help of the SAS to find him? I could have made that up though..

I think that they need to be seen to be doing something, and also it sends out a pretty clear message to anyone who is helping him.

But unfortunatly weather the cameras are there or not i feel that he would react the same way and I can not see him giving himself up anytime soon..

EldritchCleavage · 09/07/2010 11:45

How could you saturate an area with armed police and helicopters without anyone noticing?

scurryfunge · 09/07/2010 11:48

He has already said he has no way out and nothing to lose anyway.

CaptainKirksNipples · 09/07/2010 11:50

He sounds like the kind of person to take a few people with him when he finally kills himself or is shot by the police. Agree it is quite dangerous, and it is not going to end well.

Chil1234 · 09/07/2010 12:22

YABU. There's no such thing as a 'discreet but thorough' man hunt. The reason for the publicity is the same as in the Shannon Matthews case i.e. so that the police can add a few thousand eyes belonging to the general public to their efforts. Also, local people need information on what to do, where's safe etc. If the police were keeping it all softly softly and someone happened on him without knowing who he was.... now that would be unforgiveable.

AgentZigzag · 09/07/2010 12:41

I agree that the attention the media gives this story puts pressure on the bloke, but, if the media didn't give information, people in the area wouldn't be able to make choices in their everyday life with all the facts at their disposal.

I think the police said the SAS is not involved, but they would say that wouldn't they, it's not something they're going to shout about.

They're having trouble catching him because there is so much coverage from the trees, so the helicopter can't see the ground, and their thermal cameras aren't much good cos there's so many people on the ground.

There are plenty of people walking around with guns or knives they're prepared to use, but I suppose this bloke has shown he's prepared to use it not only to target specific people but indiscriminately.

5Foot5 · 09/07/2010 13:16

If he is hiding out in the open, as seems to be suggested, will he actually be aware of the media coverage anyway?

PortiaNovmerriment · 09/07/2010 13:18

Maybe he's got an iPhone?...

scurryfunge · 09/07/2010 14:38

Update is that 3 of his mobiles have been located.

pranma · 09/07/2010 17:50

I think he may have killed himself already

GypsyMoth · 09/07/2010 18:03

Underground caves in that area....reckon he's either in one, or someone is shielding him

MumInBeds · 09/07/2010 18:04

I don't think they have any choice in this situation when he is still at large but I hate it when they give so much attention to those who have been on a spree and are now dead, it can't help and will only encourage other nutters.

backtotalkaboutthis · 09/07/2010 18:05

Yabu, he'd do that anyway to draw attention to himself if it wasn't high profile enough for his liking.

Fabster · 09/07/2010 18:32

What I don't understand is why the police are saying so much about what they are doing as he must be hearing the news.

spybear · 09/07/2010 18:53

Definayely agree that now he will think he has to live up to all of his 'hype'.

He is obviously enjoying the attention, as he has continued to send letters ect.

Telling people to 'aviod unnecessary travel' is extreme though, I think that might fuel his fire that he has to do something big and extreme.

LuluF · 09/07/2010 19:13

Perhaps the media should concentrate on talking about the damage he's done to the families of the people he's shot and killed and then maybe he won't become any more of an anti-hero. The media could report this responsibly and actually do some good, for once. But then, where's the story in that?

Gigantaur · 09/07/2010 19:17

I guess that if people didn't know he was the fruit loop that he is they wouldn't react to him and so they wouldn't be at risk?

I am just worried that i can see yet more blood spilt over this and the media are all chomping at the bit, trying to get the first footage of it.

I don't like it.

BAFE · 09/07/2010 19:43

I reckon he's left the country.

If he's still here, he's making a laughing stock of the police and SAS combined because it's taking so long to find him.

I am very glad I don't live in the area.

Orlando · 09/07/2010 19:54

I don't think YABU. Like MumInBeds, I was thinking last night when it was the first headline on the news and they gave at least 10 minutes of the programme to it that there will be certain fkd up people who'll see this as a way to gain a kind of macho notoriety.

(shudder)

2shoes · 09/07/2010 19:55

yanbu
I can't work out why every miute detail is being released to the media

southeastastra · 09/07/2010 19:56

i've managed to avoid it, but am just watching sky and it's mad are they waiting for him to blow his brains out?

it's macabre

Ipom · 09/07/2010 22:02

They are saying that they have cornered someone believing it to be him. He had a gun.

Hope it is him, dead or alive.

I think the media are hoping to catch a shooting on camera. I feel sorry for the firearms officers. One of them may have to shoot and their faces and identity are being beamed across the world.

ifancyashandy · 09/07/2010 22:30

He is LOVING the attention. He's a complete narcisist and I don't think he'll kill himself.

He'll want to be killed by the police and go down in 'a hail of glory'.
