p.s. it's very hard to 'cover up' your face and hands in the summer without looking very odd and getting sweat rash from overheating.

seashore · 09/07/2010 20:35

I too find I can't wear suncream,I've tried many different types none work my skin used to feel irritated the second I put some on so now I just use hats and stay in the shade, I don't like sun holidays anyway, so it's not a big problem, in general I just stay out of bright direct sunlight.

Kawaiiko

Thank you so much for your links. All are fascinating.

I laughed at your DM comment but the comments to this article are more than interesting.

I've never, ever used chemical suncream on my dc. I just use natural creams ie Jason ,Lavera which are fantastic.I cover the kids up,they wear floppy hats and rash vests and we don't really sit out in it at peak time. None have ever been burnt.

Going chemical free doesn't mean protection free.

katiestar · 09/07/2010 23:24

But if in the olden days skin cancer was much rarer even though people spent much more time in the sunlight, then surely that is an argument to say that we should not be using suncreams but allowing a natural tan to build up gradually. This is what do with my kids as they are allergic to sun tan lotion
Another thought - if the chemicals in suncream are dangerous and can cause skin cancer, then how would we know?the cancers would be attributed to the sun not the sun cream I wonder what the correlation between increase in sun cream use and increase in cases of skin cancer.

lovingthesun · 10/07/2010 00:01

sheepgomeep - have you read the info on the vitiligo website about sun exposure ?

milamae, Jason & Lavera aren't particulary good brands I'm afraid (I have the Jason SPF46) check out this site for info on the ingredients sunscreen

Badger comes out as one of the best.

lovingthesun · 10/07/2010 00:07

BettyButterknife there are lots of rash vests for adults around - sainsburys has adult short sleeve ones & various websites have long sleeved ones...although more expensive. Thanks to my vitiligo I'll be sporting both kinds on the beach !

hmc · 10/07/2010 00:08

YABU. It's risk assessment. I'll take my chances with the sun cream rather than the melanoma

fluffles · 11/07/2010 19:32

katiestar in the 'olden days' we had a thicker ozone layer which filters UV light.

although the hole in the ozone layer was stopped from increasing in size when we banned CFCs it is still not entirely recovered.

MilaMae · 11/07/2010 22:03

Loving we use the (new and improved) Jason Kids Natural Sunblock 45. It isn't on the list and has none of the big nasties on that site.

lovingthesun · 11/07/2010 22:59

oh sounds good - where did you buy it from ? I really like(d) the one I have, until I went on that website & read the label on mine.

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/07/2010 23:18

I am ginger I am freckly I have 3 blonde children - I apply sunblock on exposed skin, they always wear sunhats and keep them in shade/ inside when possible in middle of the day. and I have yet to have any of them suffer from sunburn (ocassional heat rash). I had sunstroke as a child (after a daytrip to Scarborough fgs)and my back was so burned that I cried if anyone tried to dress me for two days (I also hallucinated massive purple spots!). I never want to put my kids through that!

MilaMae · 12/07/2010 00:05

Just got it from the local health food shop,it has jazzy new packaging!!!!

toucancancan · 16/07/2010 13:35

If you're still around MilaMae is it easy to rub in or does it leave you looking like a circus clown? (I'm looking for a nasties-free sunscreen to wear under makeup)

pramsgalore4 · 10/05/2011 16:11

Hi, i use ultrasun family, really good £16 a bottle but you only apply once a day so perfect for kids and really easy to rub in, my daughter has reactions to alot of suncreams but not this one. this is what they say
Ultrasun Family 30 delivers very high all day protection (UVA 93% and UVB SPF30) with just one application per day. Its super sensitive formulation is ideal for very sensitive and children?s skin and helps to prevent 'prickly heat' reactions. It provides extra protection for vulnerable areas such as shins, noses, shoulders etc.

It is free from oils, emulsifiers and perfume reducing the risk of allergy and making it especially suitable for sensitive skins. Like other ultrasun products, it is non-staining, non-greasy, water-resistant and easy to use
