To wonder how the bloody hell people afford private education for their kids?

Thinking about TTC and getting WAY ahead of myself I idly googled the local private schools. Bloody hell!! HOW do people afford this? My DH and I earn 100k between us every year so certainly not poor, but with a mortgage (on a two bed terrace) and other, what I consider to be reasonable, outgoings there is just not a way it could be done. So all these children being privately educated, do their parents earn masses and masses? Or am I missing a trick?

(Incidentally I wouldn't send my kid to private school - comprehensive was brilliant for me and if a child is going to do well they will do well, I believe. Was just wondering.)

Someone working to the extent they suffer health issues as a result is going to be a struggle and a worry for both themselves and their families, regardless of whether they’re low or high earners.

If you are strict in reserving your sympathies for those in the most desperate of situations, then you’ll find no one in the UK to be worthy of them.

I’m not sure why you think I don’t have sympathy for people. I don’t for Emothionalstorm because she (I assume) has said her husband has reduced his hours. They have a cleaner so not sure what I need to feel sympathy there. I do feel sympathy for the cleaner commuting from Kent.

Of course I feel sympathy for people, just not in this specific case. You are making a lot of assumptions about me.

I’m not making assumptions about you, I’m taking you at your word.

Yes, he’s in a position to reduce his hours. He’s fortunate in being able to do that, but I imagine it doesn’t negate the worry for his health issues that have become apparent. Someone being in a worse position than them does not mean that emotionalstorm and her family are free of concern.

Why feel sorry for the cleaner? For being employed? Presumably she/he is paid fairly, and is choosing to commute. I doubt said cleaner would struggle to find clients closer to home if they wished to.

But the thread is about private school and the article I attached was about rich people pricing out poorer people and state schools closing because there aren’t enough children.

It’s got a bit side tracked by emotionalx as she said she’s ok as her cleaner commutes from Kent. That’s why I don’t think she’s a real person. If I thought her struggles were real then maybe I would have sympathy. Of course ill health in anyone is awful.

Does it matter when the thread started? Is there anything irrelevant I’ve mentioned? What’s so old about this that I’ve missed exactly compared to current times?

Buy what was the point? It's very strange to resurrect a thread over a decade old when there are plenty of newer threads on the topic.

Why are you replying to a post from 13 years ago?

Didn’t notice the date - it was there in the list and I clicked and read!

Bloody hell! Mine were at primary school when I posted on this. Now the youngest is at university!
