to think pubic hair isn't unhygienic

I am a fan of waxing because I like it, feels clean and soft. But I only started this a couple of years ago, before it was just about removing what could be seen from the swimming suit.

Had coffee with old mate today, hadn't seen her for years, starts bitching about her SIL, obviously had a lot to vent about. SIL is in her forties and single, hardly a crime, still my friend thinks it's because she won't wax!!!!!!

Didn't say ANYTHING, as I didn't care and had to go back to work, but I can't get over the fact that she said: even if she doesn't do it in order to get some, she should at least wax for hygiene reasons".

AIBU to think that there's absolutely nothing unhygienic about leaving bodily hair where it is? And that this whole "hygiene" thing is brainwashing from waxing/shaving/lasering/whatever companies?

would have thought opposite as it's meant to trap dirt/germs innit

HurleySatOnMe · 24/06/2010 17:55

Bizarre, and another example of how porn has influenced the everyday. Anyone who wants me to wax down there, well, after you mate.

SloanyPony · 24/06/2010 17:56

Its not hygenic as long as you are clean and have a shower regularly! Like the rest of your body really. It can be a bit of a sweat trap as hair is pourous so will absorb sweat, then dry, then absorb more, etc. But its not dirty as long as its not, well, dirty! Its hair ffs. Shall we shave our heads too, or just flipping wash our hair? Duh. Grr. YANBU.

ShatnersBassoon · 24/06/2010 17:57

Yeah, it's like nasal hair. Keeps the sensitive bits a bit cleaner, I thought.

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 17:58

thought about waxing my armpits once. Did it on DH first to see how much it hurts. Naively he didn't think waxing is that painful. After the look on his face when I pulled the strip I decided not to

nope.

I think it's a cross-over from the porn industry, this idea that women have to remove pubic hair.

Mind you, look at the old, classic paintings of nudes. Mostly they were pubic hair free. I don't know what it is about the idea of hair on a woman that is considered so replusive. Not just pubic hair, legs, arms, - pits I can understand because it traps sweat and stinks! Men should shave too!

But it is, isn't it? I know I hate being hairy because I feel so self conscious, like everyone is staring at my hair - I want to make it very clear that I am talking about other hair - in my case my chin .

To be feminine = to be smooth and hair free, it seems.

cakeywakey · 24/06/2010 18:00

Oh yes, the key thing that men take into account in a relationship is the state of your pubic hair What planet is your friend on?

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:03

I have to admit that I like hair-free bodies, DH only has hair around his nipples and he twizzes, never asked him, he just does. But I see some blokes on the beach that look like they're wearing a jumper, and as you get closer you realise it's just their bare back.

Now, I wouldn't sleep with a man this hairy as I don't find it sexually attractive, but I don't think he's repulsive or unhygienic FFS

OP posts:
scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:04

And how does someone know the state of your pubic hair when they ask you on a date?

OP posts:
mloo · 24/06/2010 18:06

It's become quite fashionable, this perception that all body hair (except on your head and maybe eyebrows) is "unhygienic". Makes me feel quite X because it's just current cultural tastes, no scientific basis!

LutyensCBA · 24/06/2010 18:07

I can't see how an unshaved pube results in her being single? Do men really think "She's a looker, great personality, looks intelligent...oh wait, she keeps her pubic hair where it belongs! Best get out as fast as I can!" . I mean, really? If that's true, then I hope and pray my marriage to dh lasts because there's no way in the world I am waxing down there for any-bloody-one!!!

And no, it isn't unhygienic. That is just stupid. You could have privates with no hair, but if you don't wash it will be dirty. It's as simple as that.

cakeywakey · 24/06/2010 18:07

I feel sorry for all of the beauty therapists now having to face full-on fanjo waxing every day

LutyensCBA · 24/06/2010 18:08

Lots of x-posts

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:09

just had a thought. How does my friend know so much about her SIL's pubic hair? Or is it an assumption, like : "she's a real idiot, bet she has a full bush?". I'm not clear on that.

Companies don't make money from women who don't shave or wax or dye their hair, or wear make up. So they pay people 6 figure salaries to persuade you that you MUST do these things.

Adverts say either:

You will not get a man unless you do this
You WILL get lots of sex if you use this product (aimed at men)
You are a BAD MOTHER if you don't buy this product
This product will make you popular
This product will make you happy

If men took pubic hair into account the human race would have died out in the neolithic age!

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 24/06/2010 18:28

I find the naked fanjo thing a bit creepy tbh, reminiscent of young girls. I'm more of a "keep it within the bounds of your knickers" kind of gal. From an aesthetic point of view, is it really that attractive to take it all off? Doesn't a fanjo benefit from having a bit of covering?

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:33

I used to be like you porridge, but once my Beauty therapist convinced me to try taking it all off. I thought it was creepy, DH couldn't help thinking I looked like a 12yo, so sex was out of the question until I grew some hair.

Now I leave some on, but I'm a convert, and I don't even have a good reason for it

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:35

oh, my... this is way TMI about my fanjo, I'm so sorry everybody

Apart from anything, my extensive survey suggests that men are pretty divided on the shaven haven thing anyway.

Some like it, some don't, most dont really care that much either way.

[ps my survey involved asking people, not sleeping with them all sporting a variety of pubic topiary].

OctaviaH · 24/06/2010 18:38

Miggsie
have you seen this?

hilarious! Sorry if the link doesn't work but can be copied and pasted into address bar. Cant seem to make links work on my phone.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 24/06/2010 18:39

Are these beauty therapists obsessed with depilating every female? Might start a "Save the Muff" campaign.

Bonsoir · 24/06/2010 18:40

Pubic hair is pretty gross; even before extreme waxing became fashionable I used to want to get rid of all the hair on my undercarriage!

scatteredbraincells · 24/06/2010 18:40

well, it is one of the main ways they make a living...

Bald fanjos (I see them occasionally in swimming pool changing rooms) completely freak me out! To me it is still wholly abnormal but, hey, I am in my 40s, so guess I'd never get another shag again if me and dh split up .
