To want to kill people who put the milk in first?

Thinking about a work colleague who makes a pot of tea and then pours milk into the cups about 2 inches deep first

Told me off today for doing it 'the wrong way'!

I write the post half in jest but my colleague also has a preference for old cartons of UHT (he has a stash he's kept from long, long ago) and always uses said stash when it's his turn to do the tea.

There's good, fresh milk to hand too!

YABVU, milk goes in first, that's the law.

"There is much debate over the merits of pouring tea into milk or adding milk to your cup of tea, however pouring milk into a a cup of tea at near boiling temperatures can scald the milk (denaturing the proteins), giving your cup of tea an odd flavor. It is therefore best to add your tea to a cup that already contains the milk, much like tempering the egg base when making custard in order to bring it up to the proper temperature without ruining it. oh, so only half in jest?

So, not a real killing, only half a killing?

Rockbird · 23/06/2010 12:10

UHT 'milk' however, is Satan's spittle and should be used under no account.

Habbibu · 23/06/2010 12:11

Milk first, you buffoon.

YANBU to hate UHT, though. Blerg.

screamingskull · 23/06/2010 12:11

i feel your pain lol

hate it when it's like a cup of hot milk with a slight tea flavour. surely you should pour the tea first then add milk accordingly

Morloth · 23/06/2010 12:11

Milk first always, tastes weird otherwise.

minipie · 23/06/2010 12:12

YANBU

kill them.

StarOfValkyrie · 23/06/2010 12:12

If you're making it in a cup, you need to brew the tea before adding the milk, but if the tea is in a pot, you should really have put the milk in the cup first!

Cortina · 23/06/2010 12:13

Ah ha! Well I stand corrected but will still refuse his UHT!

I seem to remember my grandmother telling me that tea always goes in first but now I think I've remembered it incorrectly..something about cracks in her china cup not being on show if the milk went in first? And that being the case historically? But then that might be that this is why it is the correct method after all....?

Should be grateful he makes it at all, I know...

I think it is a cultural thing. I am Irish and always add milk to tea not other way around. And I like my tea strong.

YANBU

funnysinthegarden · 23/06/2010 12:14

Tea = milk in last. Coffee= milk in first. YANBU. Although personally wouldn't actually kill anyone, just refuse to let anyone else make my coffee.

belly36 · 23/06/2010 12:16

Milk first?? Who are these weird people?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 23/06/2010 12:17

Drink it black.

NorkyButNice · 23/06/2010 12:17

Milk first is just wrong.

If you've put too much milk in before adding the tea then it's much harder to strengthen the mixture than it would be to dilute it with more milk afterwards.

2shoes · 23/06/2010 12:19

ybu
it always was milk first

Rockbird · 23/06/2010 12:20

No it isn't. You're assuming pot use which isn't always the case. How hard is it to squeeze the tea bag a little harder?

And it's not cultural because I'm Irish and it's still milk first!

Cortina · 23/06/2010 12:23

Just called Granny, she said that people might want lemon tea so that's why milk should be added afterwards. Gospel according to Granny says that in the early days of tea (?) a guest would be offered milk or lemon with their tea. Therefore incorrect to put milk in first. Can you tell it's been a quiet morning?

virgomummy · 23/06/2010 12:24

yanbu, definitely milk last. I shall tell the jury the murder was just on your behalf!!

ShirleyKnot · 23/06/2010 12:24

YANBU.

Milk first? Perverts.

KittyLilith · 23/06/2010 12:25

Milk first if it's a pot, milk last if it's made in the cup. Kill away for the use of UHT though.

Mingg · 23/06/2010 12:26

Coffee = milk in first??? Nooooo!
