To want to kill people who put the milk in first?

Thinking about a work colleague who makes a pot of tea and then pours milk into the cups about 2 inches deep first

Told me off today for doing it 'the wrong way'!

Well, I go milk first if made in the cup, milk last if made in the pot . I have been told that adding putting the teabag and the milk in together means that not so much tannin is released (or something) and you can therefore have your tea strong, but not stewed. This actually seems to work.

If pouring from the pot, surely it makes sense to add milk after because the tea is at a fixed strength already?

I wouldn't say YABU though. Everyone's got their weird little ways!

SacharissaCripslock · 23/06/2010 12:33

Milk goes in last. It's tea, sugar, milk.

BadPoet · 23/06/2010 12:33

Oh, I forgot your OP was kill your colleague. In that case maybe YABU, but 2 inches of milk, and UHT too - maybe YANBU.

NorkyButNice · 23/06/2010 12:39

If you're making the tea in the cup then it's DEFINITELY milk last - you need boiling water to make a proper cup of tea, and if you've got cold milk in the cup already you're never going to get a proper brew.

swizzlestar · 23/06/2010 12:40

If it's a pot of tea then milk first, but if it's a mug then milk last.

However I can't stand milky tea so 2inches of milk first would have me fuming.

I worked at Twinings years ago and apparently you shouldn't pour boiling water onto the milk as it can change the taste.......or something like that!

Cortina · 23/06/2010 12:40

Granny called back to say 'Afternoon tea , loose leaf - darjeerling or lapsang souchong, should be served with sugar, and lemon or orange slices with milk as an alternative'.

She's just given me advice on sandwiches, cucumber thinly sliced on white etc...

Shall I let UHT colleague know for later on?

Historically it was MIF because the hot tea (out of the pot) could crack the china cups.

It also blends much better. AND it's not too difficult to err on the side of caution with the milk, and add more if neccesary after the tea has been added. If you TIF you need to stir the milk in when added. Not necessary when you MIF.

However UHT should be a hanging offence.

Morloth · 23/06/2010 12:42

Tea bags are the work of the devil. Though if you pt them into the pot with 2 bags per cup, then they are just about bearable.

Always worth making tea properly.

funnysinthegarden · 23/06/2010 12:45

what about herbal tea? Milk in first or last ?

To MIF or to TIF that is the question.

Hate UHT. Couldn't his stash be stolen

I do milk first for tea and second for coffee.

Morloth · 23/06/2010 12:49

No milk in herbal tea.

porcamiseria · 23/06/2010 12:50

NO NO NO

since when does milk go in first, no way!!!

franke · 23/06/2010 12:51

lol at "Just called Granny..." then Granny calling back having warmed to her subject

UHT reminds me of camping holidays about 40 years ago. yuck.

franke · 23/06/2010 12:52

Oh and 2 inches of milk

no no no no no

funnysinthegarden · 23/06/2010 12:53

morloth, do you not put milk in your herbal tea? What is wrong with you?

TulipsInTheSunshine · 23/06/2010 12:53

dp makes tea in a mug from the kettle and puts the milk in first.

He puts the tea bag and sugar in and then sploshes milk in too, then fills with boiling water to make vaguely tea flavoured warm milk.

boaktastic

i've trained him how to make my tea correctly but his family all do it his way and constantly hand me mugs of vomit tea... i don't even take milk ffs but they refuse to accept that!

"What is wrong with you?" You want a comprehensive list or just the current stuff?

TulipsInTheSunshine · 23/06/2010 12:55

strawberry tea is delish with milk but anything else strictly no milk (but then i don't take milk anyway so may be biased )

EnglandAllenPoe · 23/06/2010 12:56

historically, wasn't putting the milk in first a way of avoiding breaking very delicate china cups with the heat of the tea?

although i am definitely a milk-in-last person...like to get the tea good and stong, then good and milky..and almost always make tea in a cup

funnysinthegarden · 23/06/2010 12:58

morloth. Just the interesting meaty stuff thanks.

Tulips, you really put milk in strawberry tea? Sound foul.

Am also very impressed with Grannys impeccable breeding!

TulipsInTheSunshine · 23/06/2010 13:00

tastes like strawberry sweets liquified (i also add sugar)

haven't had it in ages... craving some now!

LadyCad · 23/06/2010 13:01
