to suspect that my neighbour might be growing cannabis in his house?

Myself and pretty much anyone who's visited my house this week has noticed a really pungent smell like someone smoking a reefer (used to do it as a student so know the smell!). Didn;t think much of it until l1st night until I went into my bathroom at about 9pm and got knocked sideways by the smell! Then I opened my airing cupboard which presumale adjoins neighbouring airing cupboard and it smelled really strong. I might have been imagining it but I think I started to feel the effects, I was very chilled out when DH left his contact lenses on the sink instead of binning them which usually winds me up.

My neighbour lives alone and is in his late 50s/early 60s. His garden is used as an allotment so he definitely has the growing know-how. I think he might have a weed farm.

My typing is terrible, I'm normally pretty good. I'm definitely stoned.

lol.....keep the airing cupboard door firmly closed then!

are there lotts of comings and goings from his house?

babysplotface · 23/06/2010 11:22

My understanding is that cannabis needs quite a hot environment to grow in and that weed farms are often inside houses and the police find them by checking the heat e.g. no snow on roof in winter, black outs (poss. made of bin bags?) on lots of the windows etc.

So maybe he is just smoking a lot of weed in his house?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/06/2010 11:22

What is your desired response? Would you like him to share his stash or stop altogether. You don't sound very angry or judgy so I am not sure how to reply. If the smell nauseates you, and I doubt you'd want your children inhaling it, I would, depending on your relationship with him, have a quiet word.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/06/2010 11:23

How many comma's can one post have?

SloanyPony · 23/06/2010 11:23

I'd be keeping it propped open

cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 11:24

I should have said that visitors have noticed the smell when they leave the house (outside) and not in my house, wasn't until last night that I could smell it in my house.

He has lots of old boys going in and they potter in the garden, I presumed they were digging up rhubarb and spuds but I think differently now!

I do feel very chilled out though. I;ve done no housework or anything and DH is due home early to watch the footy and I promised I'd do a big chilli con carne but can't be arsed.

If DS didn't factor, I wouldn't care about living nextdoor to a miniature Jamaica but if I'm feeling the effects then DS might...

I don't care about people smoking hash, I'd probs still like an occasional go myself if I wasn't a parent so definitely not judging neighbour. Also, don't know how to ask him about it. His cat his called Mike and he was in hysterics at DS's luar Jim bike last week in the garden so that might be explained by this

"his cat HIS called"

You can't get stoned from the smell of the plants growing...

Snobear4000 · 23/06/2010 11:46

If he's growing the stuff, you won't be getting stoned off it. You'll only be ingesting weed if there is smoke leaking into your house. You'd see the smoke, I would wager. If the smell you're smelling is smokey, well then the guy is just smoking huge amounts of weed, perhaps not growing the stuff.

I was thinking, your musings sound a bit paranoid. But that paranoia could be explained by the weed, which would mean he is indeed smoking, in which case you're not being paranoid. Is it possible to be described as paranoid, yet also be correct with your suspicions? Think about that for a bit.

One question, are you eating a great many more biscuits and toasted sandwiches than you used to? Is daytime telly becoming interesting for once? Now that was two questions, wasn't it? Hang on, isn't that three questions now? Think about that too. Go to the corner store and buy some chocolate. Put some Santana on. It's a nice day for it.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 11:47

But if he's growing, I assume he's smoking, non?

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 23/06/2010 11:48

how is the stuff processed??

jemjabella · 23/06/2010 11:48

Haha, Snobear4000 raises excellent points

cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 11:49

LOL Snobear. I'm suspcious, definitely not paranoid. Paranoid would insinuate that I'm bothered by it when really I'm not.

Either way, the area around my house STINKS of hash smoke. It really does. He might share the wealth a bit if he has got a stash in there fgs.

theyoungvisiter · 23/06/2010 11:54

Sorry but I think you are imagining this!

I guess it's possible he might be growing or smoking cannabis but I am very about the possibility of your getting stoned off this.

Your airing cupboard should not be venting into your neighbour's house for a start, and second as others have pointed out, you can't get stoned from a plant growing or from inhaling the tiny bit of smoke that could possibly filter across to your house (even supposing there is air exchange between the two houses - which I doubt.)

theyoungvisiter · 23/06/2010 11:55

lol at snobear!

jemjabella · 23/06/2010 11:55

Perhaps raise the subject of "a funny smell" and see what he says?

When my brother used to grow it would smell very strongly of cat piss (ammonia?) - it wasn't quite the same as the smell of it being smoked.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 11:59

We have various air exchanges between the two houses and I 've sat in brown cafes in Amsterdam and come out pie-eyed from the smoke! I am a lightweight though.

Anyway all I'm bothered about is finding out where the smell is coming from!

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 12:01

No Jem. This smells like how it would smell if you were smoking it.

I wonder if there are any innocuous plants growing in the gardens that smell like hash?

Your neighbour smoking dope is the least of anyone's worries really. I mean your neighbours could be doing ANYTHING behind closed doors - smoking dope ain't that bad - really! He might be a bit of a slacker but he's unlikely to be violent or aggressive.

If he is growing, he will not necessarily be selling (as many growers sell it on wholesale basis not wanting to 'deal'). So people coming and going not necessarily an indication of anything.

In my book we need more local people growing in their spare rooms as they do in Holland - it's not dangerous, and it's keeping business local, and we all like local. I'd love to buy weed from a guy like this as would many other people, as opposed to some dodgey drug dealer who is buying imported weed where the money is probably funding criminal activity, taliban (IRA in years gone by), and who probably sells harder drugs too. It's this side of the coin that gives weed a bad name.

Don't worry you won't be getting stoned - and the smell of a room of it growing is kind of funky - strong, sweet, thick, perfumed - I think much more pleasant than cat pee. It could very well travel to neighbours place. You may smell it outside when his doors are open too.

In my book your neighbour is providing a valuable local public service and I wish he lived on my street. Bummer he won't be taxed on the income he will make, that's my one complaint.

But if the smell is bothering you, you could mention it as he can probably increase insulation etc to minimise disturbance to you.

cupcakesandbunting · 23/06/2010 12:12

Downdog, I really have no problems with what goes on wrgs to hash smoking. I'm more curious than anything
and certainly wouldn't
dream of reporting it or telling him off. Just really wondering where the smell is coming from really...
