to suspect that my neighbour might be growing cannabis in his house?

Myself and pretty much anyone who's visited my house this week has noticed a really pungent smell like someone smoking a reefer (used to do it as a student so know the smell!). Didn;t think much of it until l1st night until I went into my bathroom at about 9pm and got knocked sideways by the smell! Then I opened my airing cupboard which presumale adjoins neighbouring airing cupboard and it smelled really strong. I might have been imagining it but I think I started to feel the effects, I was very chilled out when DH left his contact lenses on the sink instead of binning them which usually winds me up.

My neighbour lives alone and is in his late 50s/early 60s. His garden is used as an allotment so he definitely has the growing know-how. I think he might have a weed farm.

I just don't think you can say that you are "definitely stoned" on the basis of being chilled out about a contact lens!

I well remember a friend getting absolutely legless on weed at uni - giggles, munchies, the lot - before it was revealed that it was actually a practical joke and the "weed" was really green tea.

He isn't growing enough for you to notice a smell.
To grow it you need lights (serious lights), heat, (again, serious heat) and lots of space. An airing cupboard is way too small as the plants get tall and bushy.
You can grow the hardier species outside up to a certain point but a; the plant soon looks like a weed plant and needs to be moved for discretion and b; our most of our seasons are just to cold with not enough sun. (am assuming you are in the UK)

He might be storing his own personal supply of weed in his airing cupboard which would smell if it's a good crop , the warmth would heighten the smell but there is no way you would get high off that.
Alternatively he could be smoking in the house and the smell is leaching through, in which case you could let him know that you can smell it and could he perhaps ventilate a little better when he smokes.

CUPCAKES that's good news for your neighbour .

If he's growing it will be weed rather than hash. Hash is to weed, what tinned tomatoes is to a tomatoe on the vine.

The plants will get more & more funky/stinky as they mature (they may be mature now though)- if you don't like it it could get quite annoying. I don't think it could harm your kids in any way.

There are some plants in the alley at the back of our hosue that smell like weed when it has been raining.
They are not. I have checked

My dads dog got stoned off fumes from my mates smoking in my parent's shed. Poor pooch...

If he is in his 50's/ 60's then he was raised on Hendrix and Woodstock so weed would be pretty normal.

Some people grow their own for joint problems (no pun intended ) or if they are in a lot of pain.

JacobBlacksBitch · 23/06/2010 12:57

fumes from smoke would contain THC and is different to scent from plants. I don't think the chemical that get's you high would be in the perfume & thus inhaled, though you could absorb it via contact with skin.

it's great for PMT cramps etc

AndreaisSlowlyLosingIt · 23/06/2010 13:36

My Friend has a single plant growing in her backgarden defintly doesn't smell its crap though

Two of our neighbours/friends plan on growing it in the near future. Not really worried about it smelling. I'm far more censorned with the parents smoking it outside the school gates who can't even wait til the kids are in bed.

WillowM2B · 23/06/2010 13:47

I'm pretty sure some elderly gent was in the local newspaper fairly recently being investigated for growing "cannabis". Turned out to be a plant/weed of some sort that had quite a pungent aroma to it.

In a proper growing environment it doesnt actually smell too heavily (cannabis, not what the old boy mentioned above was growing!) The fertiliser/soil/other crap involved smells more. It certainly doesnt smell the same growing as it does smoking it, apparently...

vintagewarrior · 23/06/2010 16:18

Is astounded at what cool replies you got!!! On netmums they have sent the police and social services round by now, and insisted you move house!!!
Invite him round one evening, see if he'd like to share!!

EnglandAllenPoe · 23/06/2010 16:32

erm, well..

i wouldn't think growing (depends on the exact kind of smell really - green smells much fresher than smoke)

and certain brands of cigarette/ tobacco can smell quite similar (it used to be reckoned marlboro lights)

I personally wouldn't want to say anythign (i mean really, you aren't going to get stoned from a funny smell) though it really depends on the kind of relationship you have....

IsGraceAvailable · 23/06/2010 16:33

Does he make excuses if you want to go into his garden? Greehouse privacy is a strong indicator of weed cultivation, I'm told. Mind you, it's also an indicator of competitive vegetable growers. And mass murderers. Hmm.

He could be drying it in his airing cupboard, but that doesn't smell like a spliff - more like mouldy old leaves (suprisingly). If the nice smell comes from the airing cupboard, he's either going in there with his friends for a quiet smoke ... or propagating bulbs, though most of those smell more like onions.

I suspect I do have your answer - he uses cedar balls to keep the moths off his linen. They smell luverly. Though not a whole lot like dope. They could be cedar balls with patchouli

You've given me an idea on what to do with my garden shed! Thanks

chegirlmonkeybutt · 23/06/2010 16:36

God I would hate the smell though!

as already said you wouldnt smell it if he was growing it, only when he smokes it.

People who grow it seriously dont live in the house they rent it and turn it into a factory.

Police check utility bills because they use so much energy.

I hate weed.

I guess I will get stoned for saying that (you would have to be stoned to laugh at that joke).

IsGraceAvailable · 23/06/2010 16:51

hahahaha

Drying herbs (the cooking variety) would smell sweet, though you'd have to be a bit of a nutter to dry them in the airing cupboard when the weather's like this.

I just looked up the price of cannabis seeds They're nearly £10 each!!!

kickassangel · 23/06/2010 16:56

does he have tomato plants growing? i've heard that if planted next to them, it looks a little similar, so fairly discrete?

or is he just smoking old holborn?

rastababi · 23/06/2010 16:58

I used to live in a grow room, you can't get stoned off the plant scent, slept every night there for over a year.

Honeywitch · 23/06/2010 17:03

He might be one of those people growing for pain relief.

IsGraceAvailable · 23/06/2010 17:17

rastababi, you must have been lovely and warm!

JacobBlacksBitch · 23/06/2010 17:20

WILLOW growing outdoors it won't smell too much, growing indoors (esp if it's a grow room) it's quite pungent esp when the buds get big & sticky. My friend did this in an upstairs room and you could smell on street if his front door was open!

rastababi · 23/06/2010 19:31

I was, I swear I got a tan too

sallystaple · 14/04/2015 16:44

We had exactly the same thing with our neighbours and we have a small baby too, so we contacted police, not sure what they did but a few days later the smell seemed to disappear!!! so far been 2 weeks and no smell.
Hope it stays like that.
Community support officer I spoke to seemed quite helpful, and at teh end of the day it is illegal so shouldnt feel ashamed or scared about reporting it.
Personally I think the people saying ignore it on here dont realise quite how much it smells to live next door to it.

ThatBloodyWoman · 14/04/2015 16:51

This is a seriously zombiefied thread!

Branleuse · 14/04/2015 16:56

An old guy who likes gardening is probably just trying to grow his own to avoid the black market, which is what more smokers should be doing.

Branleuse · 14/04/2015 16:58

I would have a word with him that you can smell it in your house, and if you can, then maybe other neighbours can too, and he needs to be careful

Branleuse · 14/04/2015 16:58

oh ffs
