to think that the Mr Gum books are wonderful?

Shaaba me whiskers! I'd say even better than Roald Dahl! Just finished the third one with DS1 (aged 4) and the line about Alan Taylor (a gingerbread man with electric muscles) 'bravely weeing himself in fear' had both of us weeping with laughter. Also when Jonathan Ripples, the fattest man in the world, is lured into the 'Rippleiser' by a line of mince pies and comments, 'It's just like that dream I had. The one with the pies'. My God they are great books! Off to get the rest of the series. Go forth and buy this series now. It is wonderful.

Recommended for young children with a giddy sense of humour and adult League of Gentlemen fans!

Oh yes, I love them! Some of the humour just makes me want to laugh out loud.

Clayhead · 14/06/2010 16:10

They're fab.

NeverPushWhenItSaysPull · 14/06/2010 16:55

Except when your DS, like mine, loudly asks: "Why is that man fat like Jonathan Ripples?" within earshot of said fat man .

Have you had a game of butcher's darts, or watched the latest episode of Bag of Sticks on the website?

helyg · 14/06/2010 16:59

I absoloutely love them, and so do DS1&2 (who are 6 and nearly 8).

We saw Andy Stanton at the Hay festival a couple of weeks ago, and he is as funny in RL as his books are

Easywriter · 14/06/2010 17:02

AIBU to demand that you change your title to something more along the lines of

'AIBU to be outraged that the literary conosciente haven't given Andy Stanton a Booker yet?'

There is no question Mr Gum RULES!!

catinthehat2 · 14/06/2010 17:15

He's very funny. I got dragged to a meet the author event and was dreading it, but he was excellent, I've recommended him before. We have all the books, and they are fit for the bin now.

nickelbabe · 14/06/2010 17:22

why on earth would you think that you were BU?
silly woman!
of course they're wonderful!

one of my best-sellers!

catinthehat2 · 14/06/2010 17:24

Oh yes it's an AIBU.

I bet KOrkii IS Andy STanton drumming up business!

Easywriter · 14/06/2010 17:43

Well Korki or should I say Andy, anyone who can wean my 6 year old daughters off Flower fairies in one fell swoop gets my vote.

Genius, absolute genius!
Maybe if you don't win a booker you should at leaset get the PG Wodehouse fiction comedy award.

DP and I 'argue' about who is going to read it to the children.

mankyscotslass · 14/06/2010 17:43

DS loves these books, I tried them in desperation to get him away from Horrid Henry.

It's fab listening to his belly laughs and chuckles as he reads them!

junkcollector · 14/06/2010 20:50

YANBU. THE TRUTH IS A LEMON MERINGUE!

Bingtata · 14/06/2010 20:55

Oooh, I'm pootling off to amazon now, that sense of humour sounds right up my DD's street.....

Bingtata · 14/06/2010 20:56

I'm hovering over the one click ordering...are they a series? Do I need to get them in order?

RatherBe · 14/06/2010 21:05

It doesn't matter if you don't read them in order, we didn't. But do read them!

MilaMae · 14/06/2010 21:07

Which did you like best?

Bingtata · 14/06/2010 21:08

I am a slave to mumsnet...ordered!

biscuitbear · 14/06/2010 21:10

We didn't read them in order and couldn't for the life of us work out who Alan Taylor was. He is a biscuit. We know now.

DianeAdores · 14/06/2010 21:11

Oh dear, I don't like them at all. DS loves them, though.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 14/06/2010 21:14

I love 'em
A bit Spike Milligany

The DSs agree, fortunately

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 14/06/2010 21:21

The audio version is good too!

spybear · 14/06/2010 21:29

Oh i love it some brilliant randomness.

I have to quote.

" The ancient carpet was the colour of unhappiness"

"Mr gum was too fast and shot out of bed faster than a guilty onion"

I LOVE these books (am only on book 3)

iloveasylumseekers · 14/06/2010 21:35

thanks for the rec. sounds just up our street. have ordered the first one.
x

nickelbabe · 21/06/2010 14:35

right, i've put them all on my website.

hadn't thought of doing that before, but they're a perfect series for 6 upwards, aren't they!

AngryPixie · 21/06/2010 14:48

Mr Gum eats Rainbow Fairies for breakfast and puts ice cubes down Horrid Henry's girlie pants. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them one and all!

nickelbabe · 21/06/2010 15:01

hee hee - that's almost like a spin-off series on its own!
